83 Venture overheating Help
zagger replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Maybe you already have this fixed by now but . . . early models like yours (and mine) have a plastic water pump rotor and the later ones have aluminum. I understand that sometimes the plastic blades erode and effectively stop pumping. I replaced mine with an aluminum one. Just a thought. zag -
I love the dryer idea, hope it is a cheap one and your wife is out of town! I blasted some rust out of a tank with a pressure washer and used red coat to line the inside. The red coat stuff is a pretty nasty concoction made of methyl ethyl ketone and some plastic stuff. Sort of like molasses and pretty hard to get into every corner. Thinning it with some more MEK helps but it is still pretty goooky. Once it hardens (filling your lungs with MEK vapors) it seems ok - kind of a plastic coating. Best of luck. zag

83 Mixture Screw Source???
zagger replied to zagger's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You da man, Mr. Bird! I checked the 85 Vmax parts list and it matched the 91 venture part number. Went to the stealer this afternoon and they actually had 7 of these little stinkers in stock! No lie. Bought 2, came home after work and stuck them in the carbs and put the carbs back in the beast. Fired right up and it is burning on all four! Hot pipes all the way around. Finally. Looks like I may be able to run up to the Pork rally with Eagleeye later this month. Thanks for the suggestion on the part number - it never occurred to me that they might list the part for later models. happy zag -

Sorry, Vogel is a long way for me with only two functioning cylinders. Since I've ordered two that may fit and I'm going to order another two that may fit, I will keep your offer in my back pocket for now. I really appreciate your interest in my plight (i.e. my total screwedness). Thanks, zag -

In case you may want to change your mind, this is the machine I am trying to make run on all four. zag -

It's the thought that counts! Following your logic, I looked up the 85 Vmax and got a part number which AMAZINGLY matches the one for the 91 Venture. Somehow, I think that we are on to something. The Beast will live again! zag -

http://www.mikesxs.net/parts/img250/48-5011.jpg This is the one I ordered - fits the 80-84 stock BS34 Mikuni carbs. We have the BDS34 carbs. Sure looks similar but who knows, not me! zag -

Freebird, you are exactly correct and I appreciate you checking on this! On the other hand, I looked through the various carb components and none of them seem to have the same part numbers as the 83 versions. I wonder if they really are the same. Of course, on the other-other hand, could they be any worse than a mixture screw from an entirely different carburetor like the ones I ordered based purely on the picture? Could you pull one out of your machine and send it to me so I can check it out? zag -
83 Mixture Screw Source???

Don't know that the guy learned anything since he crashed it, totalled it, and the insurance co. sold it to me. The idle screw was the last thing I checked after ripping out the carbs 4 times. I didn't know they had such a fragile tip that could be broken off. Other idle screws I have seen were simply tapered to a tip on the business end. I'll let you know what I find out when the replacements arrive. zag -
83 Mixture Screw Source???

Well, I confirmed this morning that the super secret mixture screw that Yam doesn't want us messing with cannot be purchased from a dealer. Big surprise. I am going to make a leap of faith and order a couple from the MikesXS site which fit a similar Mikuni carb - the BS34 (Venture has the downdraft version BDS34). For all you screw busters out there, I will let you know if they match. I am telling the truth - I didn't shear them off, someone else did! Some freak'n moron. zag -
83 Mixture Screw Source???

I finally found the reason why a couple of cylinders were idling super rich - the tips of two idle mixture screws were missing, busted off by some previous owner! In looking at the carb exploded diagram it doesn't seem that these screws have a part number and I am guessing that they aren't available from the dealer (I'll check tomorrow morning). Anyone know a source for these little stinkers? Anyone have a couple of old carbs they might like to sell? Feeling a little gloomy right now. zag -

Sorry about the two posts - my screwup. I did the first and my computer died and I thought it had not been sent. Did the second and then saw that the first was actually up on the site. Couldn't figure out how to remove it. Guess that shows how often I post zag -

I cut the downtubes and bent the back of the frame to tip out the forks. I welded the downtubes back together with some reinforcements and also reinforced the top frame tubes. I did everything on this project - including sand bending the pipes (I don't have a tube bender). Only thing I didn't make or scavenge from something else were the forks (Forking by Frank - good guy and great work). zag -

I thought you guys might be interested to see the forward controls and the manual v-boost. By the way, I also delinked the brakes - hand lever does both front disks, pedal does rear. Works fine. zag -

Thanks Mr. Whiskey. The intake system has 2" dia. aluminum tubes to partially simulate the box on each intake combined with a high flow k&n filter for each intake. Yup, this messes with the mixture and I'm tinkering with that aspect to get it happy. Handles really smooth on the road due to it's long trail. Probably the most noticeable thing is the low cg and the feel of a much lighter bike. Feels like it weighs much less than my 575lb sabre but I don't think it does - haven't found a scale to weigh it yet. zag -

Thanks for all the nice comments! Forks are 9" over standard and as I remember trail is about 7" or so. Like most chops, it is real smooth once you get rolling and pretty clumsy at a standstill - but not that much different than any large bike. zag -

Yup. It's in the usual location-under the seat. Just about the only thing I didn't really change. Just blasted out the rust and coated the inside with nasty red stuff. zag -

Hey buddy, Went to a somewhat smaller battery and crammed it in the space in front of the engine. Changing the frame geometry gave a little more room there and lowering the location helped with the cg. Really amazing how light the thing feels. Also took off about 200lbs of plastic and stuff in the chop process. Of course, now I don't have any place to put anything! zag -

Hey Jeff, Not staight. Made some perforated baffles to knock the sound down a little. I think I need to do a little more and will make something that can be hinged down over the ends for the early morning getaway. Hard to describe the sound right now - very low nascar rumble. Definitely not harley - much better. Really not that loud (except in the early morning). zag -

By the way - tore apart engine and did 2nd gear fix also. Kind of fun and needed to apply the flat black anyway! Honestly, I've never heard anything like this. The deepest Nascar sound you ever imagined. Zag -
