  1. I've never dropped mine, knock on asphalt. . . But I just bought a new bike and I must say the 89 was easier to ride at slow speeds. Thinking of the mod to raise it an inch in the back to see how this goes. I just rode two and a half hours yesterday in Illinois on a 40 degree day in the wind and rain and she drove great. A backrest is a must have and the forum and the people on it are great also. . .
  2. I used to teach Emergency Vehicle Operators Course to police and we set up cones and did drills. One of the drills was steering around an obstacle at high speed as an alternative to hitting your breaks and striking the object. I say well done. Another technique was not locking your brakes,(a locked brake won't steer and has less friction with the road surface) this needs to be practiced in a parking lot but if you hit your foot brake and it locks, curl your toes up in your boot until it just unlocks and you have the most control and fastest braking distance you will get. If you let off and reapply you waste time and usually jam on it worse the second time. In emergency driving your vision gets narrowed so you look where you have decided to go and do your steering inputs. We only have two things we can control no matter what we are driving, speed and direction. Most fatal accidents are caused by over compensating for a corrective action. ie the car that avoids an obsticle and puts it in the ditch, then over corrects and crosses the center line and usually ends up in the opposite ditch or beyond.
  3. Can you ship by bus to Canada, I had a front bumper I won on ebay and they shipped it by Greyhound. It was cheap and fast but I had to pick it up. The car parts lady said they ship by bus all the time and I have used it a few times since.
  4. I bought a cheap handlebar gps / phone holder at walmart , it was 21.00 and is water resistant. I would spend the extra 20.00 and get the waterproof one though. Mounts easy and works great.
  5. if u open the fairing do yourself a favor and get some dielectric grease, put a bead around the rubber channel where each connector is under the fairing. That caused problems for me. I would check to see that the speakers did not come unplugged somewhere...
  6. I agree, it's awesome. I drove 2 1/2 hrs with it being a tad bit windy and got off with no back pain or stiffness. It adjusts about every which way. I'm 5 10 225.
  7. I don't know why this didn't work
  8. Ok I was cleaning my garage, a work in progress, when I came across my dremil tool. A light bulb went off as I purchased aftermarket saddlebag rails and they are smaller diameter. I did try some grommets but didn't like the look ( can you say afterthought) and they didn't work well. I decided to mark the location of the rails and with a sanding wheel remove some plastic to allow for mounting in the original position. I used the insides as a template for the radius as a starting point and a small sanding wheel to ease away the plastic. Once one sided was done and fit I placed them together to position the other half and repeated the process.
  9. Look at your VIN The first digit denotes where the motorcycle was produced (example: J for Japan) The eighth digit represents whether the bike will receive a green or a red sticker( the letter "c" or the number "3" will receive red anything else will be green to figure out your year, count your VIN from left to right (Or as you would normally read it) 10 CHARACTERS. Compare your Character with the chart below. For example of your 10th character is a "W" then look at the chart below, your bike is a 1998. If your 10th character is a 5 then your bike is an 05 and so on. 1980 = A 1981 = B 1982 = C 1983 = D 1984 = E 1985 = F 1986 = G 1987 = H 1988 = J 1989 = K 1990 = L 1991 = M 1992 = N 1993 = P 1994 = R 1995 = S 1996 = T 1997 = V 1998 = W 1999 = X 2000 = Y 2001 = 1 2002 = 2 2003 = 3 2004 = 4 2005 = 5 2006 = 6 2007 = 7 2008 = 8 2009 = 9
  10. Put a drivers backrest on that puppy and walk it back sitting on the saddle
  11. Two questions, is that a two stroke and have you checked compression on the cyls?
  12. I use the iphone, it is awesome, I have a mount on my handlebars and plug it in. It's my phone, my GPS, my email and my browser on the road. If I am hungry it tells me where restaurants are and the kind of food they serve, I need medicine it tells me where the pharmacies are, I need a Yamaha dealer it tells me where the nearest ones are. . . . I can touch the number and it calls them or the address and it guides me there. I can connect it to my bike and hear music or just take a ride when I am on call and know that I didn't miss anything staying at home. I can even click on the forums app and talk to u guys on the road. . . It's made life more complicated and simplified it at the same time. I love his innovation and will celebrate that he used the gifts God gave him. I am sure he wouldn't have wanted me as his neighbor, we probably wouldn't have been hunting, fishing or riding partners but thats ok. In the grand scheme of things we will be judged by how we live our lives and what we have done for our fellow man.
  13. Short Timer, odds of failure very high
  14. Sea Foam is amazing stuff, kind of like lucas, its a great gas additive will help you maintain your fuel system. You can find it at most auto stores, WalMart . . .
  15. Hey, was that a first Gen??
  16. Da world is a cruel place
  17. I wired mine to running and brake lights. They do not have a ground wire and you will need to ground the body. I also hate cutting into the factory wiring or using splices so I soldered the end to a short wire, about 3" long and heat shrinked it with a male bullet connector on one end and a female on the other, unplug the factory wiring and simply plug it into each side. The bright light is the breaks, dim side running and run a ground to from the tail light plug to the frame of the light that you bolted to the license plate holder. If you don't ground the body your running lights will work and when you hit the breaks they will go off. . .
  18. Man, Da Bears just didn't show up after halftime, ewe got ure W
  19. I use http://forums.iboats.com/forum.php for my boat issues, not real familiar with Yamaha marine but lots of good help there. Good luck
  20. 1) Do you have a fuel / water separator? If so drain it or for cartridge replace the filter. If you don't have one, get one. 2) get a gallon of fresh clean gas from a shell , Phillips in a fresh container and go direct to the motor. Cheap gas causes lots of issues. ( I always run marine stabil and this time of year I double up) 3) If it's DI pull the plugs and mark a line on the ceramic on the opposite side of the ground electrode. I know that this will cause an e-tec to run bad, the electrode needs to face away from the injector. 4) Bad injector , try switching the injector to see if the problem moves / or carb hose . . . I had to replace all my hoses with lined hoses because of ethanol and use oetiker clamps instead of the cheap hose clamps. Make sure your priming bulb is hanging vertically from the motor and not laying horizontal.
  21. All day on the bike and no back pain, the back rest is awesome. It has a lot of adjustments, looks great and was not a bad install.
  22. Thoughts and prayers, St Michael protect them
  23. In Illinois our gas is at least E10, most cheaper stations have E10 signs but run higher ethanol. Ethanol trashes your rubber and does not burn as efficiently as gas. I just had to put all new hoses on my boat with a lined gas line to deal with the ethanol. When I drive to my brothers in Tennesee my gas mileage always goes up. You can find kits to check your gas formulations, station to station will be different. Saving a few cents per gallon doesn't always save you in the long run.
