  1. Cool clear box design from a customer in the UK. He posted the files - you can get them from a link on my site.
  2. You are getting good advice. Lots of things to try before pulling the rack. Yes - check the airbox seal. Yes - check all the exhaust pipes after a couple of minutes to see if any are cold. Yes - run Seafoam. Yes - check the diaphragms. In fact, you might as well order a set. Yes - squirt a little carb cleaner in while you have the slide and needle out. If you have a cold pipe, pull the cap off the mix screw. Count the turns in to the bottom, remove the screw, squirt in some carb cleaner, and reset the screw. If you forgot to count turns, set to about 1.75 turns out as I recall (might be off and there are other opinions). Many think you should drain the bowls, flood with Seafoam, and let sit, but I have never done that. Run some more Seafoam. Ride the bike hard. At this point, if no success, get ready to pull and rebuild the carbs.
  3. I think you are saying that you adjust the idle mixture for best performance using a vacuum measurement as a proxy for performance. I don't think you are saying that a vacuum gauge can in effect detect a blockage in the enrichment circuit - only that an enrichment circuit that is blocked or badly adjusted has an effect on performance.
  4. Well, we should at least mention that responsible mechanics take it to the local hazardous waste disposal site to keep it out of the water, the air, etc. Everyone else likes the exploding rifle target idea the best.
  5. Of the bikes I've owned and want back, this would be top of the list. 1982 Midnight Maxim XJ 750 Touring with Yamaha faring and luggage.
  6. Sometimes I am tempted by the notion of a kick start SR400 or a CB1100 for buzzing downtown.
  7. A customer comparing the vacuum pulse RPM feature with the tachometer. Success!
  8. Yes. Wind these V4's UP! Especially on the faster 1st gens.
  9. Another DIY trick that has been discussed on here is to pull the fuel mix screws and spray some carb cleaner in there. Remember to turn the screws in counting the turns to bottom so you can be reset the mix when you put them back in. That saved me from a rebuild when I first bought my 89. My #3 had clogged. Read about it a bit before attempting.
  10. Jeff - that's a quote from you way back in 2012 when I first posted this project. That's exactly what it does now, after many false starts. I count the pulses in all the sensors and do the math. It turned out to be more complicated than I thought, but it works well now. Thanks for the nudge. Here is what it looked like then...
  11. Got it. I had one printed in red. Too spendy but pretty cool.
  12. This summer I was watching the 'Justified' series online (highly recommended) and decided to explore bourbon a bit. I've been buying different bottles on various best lists for months. And drinking it, even though I was only a good wine and cheap beer guy except for an occasional bloody mary. So far, I think I am tasting a lot of expensive marketing and focus group results. The bottles are pretty. The difference is in the mash of course, how much wheat vs rye. And how much time in what kind of oak, barrels or chips. I think as a beginner I liked smoother wheat and if I stick with it will move toward more rye and its character. Same journey I made with scotch decades ago going from something bland like Chivas Regal to a smokey single malt. Except now I'm more of a cheapskate, or a value shopper, or whatever, than ever. So I usually circle back to Wild Turkey. Yesterday at the store a cute girl was giving taste tests so I bought a local small batch bourbon instead. Lots of those popping up. She was cute. I also tasted what she called a real potato (note to Dan Quayle no e) vodka which surprised a 'that's good' out of me. I usually think of vodka as just as flavorless diluted alcohol I put in my bloody mary. Or not. PBR is good enough for me.
  13. Yes, it will fit if it has the standard Arduino Uno or a recommended clone board underneath. Other clone boards are supposed to be exactly the same but I suspect they vary some. Even so the case is designed to allow some tolerence. PM me a picture of yours. Thanks, Jeff.
  14. I'll have my sample soon. Then I'll figure out on-demand 3-D printing and logistics. I'll put them on my site and let you know. Thanks!
  15. The new 3-D printed case is coming along. Many thanks to Stephan in Quebec Province!
  16. Cool. I ordered one right away. My DigitalCarbSync.Com board will plug right in. Software should load and run okay, too. But I may be able add new features.
  17. and not the good kind... Hey boss, Looks like trouble has found us. Might have to tighten up on trial members. And a moment of good spam... here are some attractions at the Spam Museum. The contents of the museum and the product are surprisingly good!! If you are riding the I-90 slab it is a good stop.
  18. I was visiting family in Minnesota. My brother had bought a 91 to be his 2-up bike. His wife wouldn't ride on his Stratoliner. He just bought it to ride; he didn't pamper it. Out to the countryside around Rochester we went. Very pretty around there. I rode the Venture. A few miles out the top radiator hose started spraying. We let it cool a bit, released the pressure cap, and limped back to town. We loosened the bottom of the radiator, tilted the top, pulled the hose, and headed to the auto parts store. Nothing else was open. We handed the clerk the hose and asked him to find a right-sized hose with a similar bend in it somewhere. We bought that, a hose cutter and some hose clamps. It was easy to cut out the chunk we wanted and get it installed. Topped off the fluid and we had a couple of days riding together for the first time. We weren't young. He was on his 3rd wife and family. He is the youngest. "Make your own parts," we said with much satisfaction the next few days. Our dad was the respected mechanic in our little town. I spent a little time in his shop during various school vacations. He made his own specialty tools if he needed to. Navy machinist. He said he didn't think I should carry on as a mechanic. He was right. But I did absorb some good lessons that proved useful. I am thankful for that.
  19. Loved my guzzi but the closest dealer was an hour away in Portland. My local mechanic just shook his head and said that 'we don't know much about these.' That was okay for the one I had, but not for the $18,000 California Touring bike I wanted to buy.
  20. In my case, the rear brakes are fresh from the shop. But I've had lockup before and after putting new pads on. I've decided that there is a large measure of operator error - me - at work here, too. I just need to form new braking habits. This is the first bike with unlinked brakes I've had in quite a few years, and one with a lot of braking (not stopping) power in the back. I do get lazy with modern conveniences. If the 50's return I'm screwed!
  21. Yep. Generally, I like to drag just my rear brake a little on u-turns. I don't usually on sweepers but I've read that some do like that, too. But these are heavy bikes, and as the links above point out, between the foot lever and the 4 calipers, you can easily lock up the rear wheel. If the rear end starts passing you, you have a real danger of a high side flip. On my Moto Guzzi, the floorboard and foot lever were just added on in place where there had been a footpeg before. It was so awkward to use the rear brake I mostly didn't. May have to revisit that habit. I'll have to think about doing the Butler mod of adding an adjustable metering valve. I can't believe any shop would do that for you - too much liability.
  22. Ok I found these threads... https://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?15765-Linked-Brakes&highlight=rstd+linked+brakes and https://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?13098-Brake-Proportioning-Valve-The-Butler-Mod
  23. Do these bikes have the same linked brakes as the Ventures? They must but mine doesn't seem so. I get a lot more rear wheel lock ups than I expected.
