This forum is excellent! Best $12 ever.

I keep seafoam in because I don't know how long the bike might have to sit waiting for extended days of rain to end. I had some carb issues at the end of last year and have been running it steady since then, but will back off when I can ride it regularly. I don't add it for octane, or to change performance, just maintenance. I was just wondering if it would have an affect on mileage.

Not complaining, just wondering. Does a good dose of seafoam affect mileage? I suppose I had 1/3 to a 1/2 more than the recommended mix. I measured 40 mpg on a 2 tank ride yesterday out to the Oregon coast and back around to home. Great day! http://db.tt/H451XZov

My brother has a 91 VR that he was always going on about, and he was talking about info on this site. When I bought mine, I joined. BEST $12 I ever spent for sure. The info is great, and it's so rare on the web that a board hasn't been ruined by dumbsh*ts WHO YELL THAT THEY ARE RIGHT or disdain you for not knowing something or sniff that your bike didn't cost $26000 or you don't have all the exactly right $1000 riding gear or that you don't have a collection of $100 black t-shirts.

My brother in Wisconsin is having trouble figuring out his 91 VR. He's paid up here but I have more time. He reported sluggish performance at speed. I had him run his bike cold for a minute and #3 didn't warm up. He pulled off his air box and diaphragm cover. The carbs looked clean, was probably cleaned by the dealer before he sold it, but he sprayed it down with carb cleaner anyway, and got it to spray up through the jets. He pulled the plug, grounded it against the case and reported seeing it spark. So he put it back together. It ran rougher than before, which sounded like a new air leak but he hasn't gone back to check. The plug wire on #3 had a cap that was pretty chewed up. He's thinking of replacing all the plug wires. I've suggested his next step is to get his ohm meter out to test resistances of his ignition circuit, but other than saying that I don't know how to do it. Any other diagnostic suggestions would be welcomed, as well as a pointer to resistance testing info. I've found a few scattered but not a definitive write up. Thanks! Tom

My 2011 vintage price guide says Perfect $10000 Excellent 8000 Very good 6000 Good 4000 Fair 2000 Poor 1100 Your description sounds fair to good. Does it have compression?

I am interested.

I'm getting the idea of the acceleration when you roll on throttle. What happens or could when you roll off? Does thing get jumpy?

The vmax has a higher stand over height than the VR? Huh! I walked by one yesterday but not really looking and it didn't strike me like a high BMW or similar. Too much acceleration to enjoy on general riding? Cornering and handling reports?

I'm thinking it would be fun to have the same engine as my VR in a different ride. Does anyone have any experience to report with these bikes? I'm thinking of an an older model, maybe even a 89 so they match.

I can't remember seeing Frogg Toggs with full length zippers. I had a set that had short zippers and they were too hard to get into. I'm looking at Tourmaster Sentinel Motorofficer gear ($58 for the pants from leatherup). I do need something to carry in my bags as well as something more deliberate for longer tours.

I don't mind the cost of great touring riding gear especially if I can avoid of any the mistakes that sent others back to buy something different. Any lessons you learned AFTER you bought gear for riding cool and wet winters (I'm in Oregon) or hot dry summers (like eastern Oregon) that you wish you had known, or purchases you wish you had made first? Thanks Tom

Tie down strap question.
tz89 replied to Rosie1965's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
figure 8 off the fork brace in front, bag guards in back, and I used 2 lateral at the sides. If you use the handlebars: you have to load the suspension or it may get loose, and have to avoid the plastic. Before the method above I went from the handle bars backward and the bag guards forward.- 10 replies

headset for 1986 Royale

I'm just thinking of my recent visit to the car stereo place, where I had dozens to choose from will all kinds of different options including bluetooth and cell phone linkages. The key was a mounting bracket that fit my Highlander and a wiring harness to interface with the existing wiring. And, of couse, someone who knew what they were doing. Could a bracket/box be designed/constructed that would drop in to replace the existing panel? One that would allow standard mounting mobile audio components to slide in? I am thinking 1st gen of course. -

I would love to see a group buy for an audio/communications replacement set up. Mine all work, but it's just a matter of time before I'll want another MKII to go with it and maybe set up to be a daily driver. -
The cleanest, but if the condition is the same...The 2000. In 2 years you can sell it for what you paid. The 2007 not. Austerity is not just for Greeks.

Seafoam in the Oil - - How Much?
tz89 replied to Bobby G's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Last time I ran the Seafoam in the case longer than intended - about a 100 miles. I was a little worried but I think it was fine. The can doesn't say that's a problem but it made me nervous all the same. Oil came out very black but I noticed that now in my oil window it still looks like the oil is fairly clean even though it is time to change again. Next time I do this I'll add the Seafoam, run it and change out the oil all the same day. -
Interesting follow up discussion. I think it all depends on one's circumstances. Here in Salem we don't get 0 degrees and a foot of snow. Foot of rain, maybe, and it has been flooding here this week. For $25, a few odds and ends, and something like ingenuity, my bike is plug and play. That's important here where I have to snatch unexpected riding opportunities whenever I can. It is relatively easy to pull the battery although I do worry about these old brittle parts, I mean on the bike. I like to leave them alone if I can. I was curious to find out if this low wattage solar panel would do anything in this place. So far, so good. By season's end I'll know if my battery is still good. If not it is not necessarily the battery tender's fault. But if the old battery is still fine then my confidence will be high for next year.

The bike has had to sit 3-4 weeks between rides and the weather has been mostly overcast, lots of rain and just a few sunny days. But even on sunny days this far north there is not a lot of sun time on the solar panel, and the angle is much less than ideal. But, so far so good. I have not had any issue with a dead or weak battery. And the landlord has not complained about my stealthy installation.

I used a figure 8 this summer on my 89vr and it worked fine. I just wanted to try something different. Over the fork brace, down and cross over behind the lower tube, out and hooked to the tie downs. My theory was it would keep all the stress on the brace while not rubbing the upper tube or seal. Not recommending it; it just worked for me. Sorry I didn't get a photo. t

Here's a picture of the solar panel. I snuck it up on the roof of the carport and ran the wire and a retrieval rope down the post held by zip ties. I'm hoping to not attract the attention of the landlord or any thieves. Just for fun I included a decoy rope on my cover so that anyone who notices the wire might think it is just another rope or something. http://db.tt/VxBhMARl http://db.tt/yK3foU8B The panel itself is Sunforce 50013. I'll report later on whether it keeps the battery up. Hopefully I'll get frequent riding between rain days. t

Is it really necessary? If so, then a couple more. I've read suggestions somewhere to plug the exhaust pipes if the bike is going to be parked for a while. If so, I'm thinking of a ball of aluminum foil. Any better ideas? Is there any reason to park it on its center stand, rather than the kick stand? Winter here mostly means grey days and rain, with a few riding days mixed in. So I want my bike ridable on short notice. I got it laced with seafoam, connected to my new solar battery maintainer, and covered. Any other tips? Thanks tom

I kind of like the notion that there are secret elixirs that can't be easily deconstructed. If it was cheaper to buy people wouldn't be so fanatical about it. By the way, seafoam is probably just mayonnaise and Russian dressing, or whatever the secret sauce was in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. t
