I agree about the 2007 midnights. I would like the fuel injection, ran a bit rough and gas mileage went down the tubes when I road out to stardays 2009 due to the high altitudes. and of course the whine about the whine remains. Al

class compressor
motorcycle_1300 replied to rbig1's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I am not sure who posted the great photos and instructions for repairing and testing the Class but I want to say thanks. took me two tries to get the solder job fixed, First time I was carefull and precise in my soldering nice clean cone shsped joints that didn't work. Second try using a radio shack butane irom and a not so pretty soldering job and it all works. Actually knew the first try didn't work after taking a meter to it. so persistance will pay off, don't just give up. THANKS! Al- 23 replies

I have never used Seafoam or similar additives to any bike I have owned. I have owned well over a dozen bikes in the past 45 yeqars of riding. When automotive spark plugs started going to 100k intervals I have to admit I have not changed or had anybody change my plugs, although I take my bikes to the dealer every spring and ask for a spring check up, pushing well over 50k miles on the rsv the old venture highway I also put over 50k without a plug change. so far never had a starting problem except for weak batteries needing to be charged b4 first spring ride. Other than when the friggin dealer cracked the cam shaft on my right front cylinder I have never experienced rough running(he was replacing a head gasket that had a slight leak). Now my 92 VR only has 21k miles on it and I havn't ridden it much since I bought it as a fixer upper 4 years ago. starts right up every time. So I guess my question is why do so many folks seem to need to use additives and others never. Is it a gas quality issue by location? is it the 85 octane I seem to only find in the western states( never see less than 87 here). I have trouble believing I have been so lucky so many times, so there must be some variable I am missing Al

Not sure how far you are going but if you get into clinton county and feel like company for dinner feel free to call send an email for phone number. If you are not going that far have a safe and pleasant journey Al

The FJR had an issue with main ground connection that would cause similay issues. My first gen had ignition switch problems with similar symptoms. if you get lights but no starter lookn at kill switches, kick stand switch. tilt switch, clutch lever if trying to start in gear instead of neutral. However my best guess would be poor ground somewhere. Al

I am not one of the wake babies and scare little old ladies crowd I prefer quiet, the quieter nthe better. I can understand if it is a performance issue, but most loud bikes are loud just for the sake of loudness. Most loud bikes casn barely get out of their own way. You don't want your bike to sound like it is powerfull you want a bike that is so powerfull you can't contain the sound. Al

the Motorcycle safety course tries to reinforce the idea of using the kill switch to shut off a bike. Whenever I get on a bike where the rider has recently taken the course I have trouble starting the bike. Now there are about fifty other ways to shut off a bike, one I like most is putting down the kick stand. I just don't like the idea of using something called an emergency shut off switch for routine use. Sort of like my dislike for folks who use turn signals for lane change indicators, they piss me off , there is a name for those things for a reason folks, stop misusing things. Emergency brakes on cars used for routine parking on hills, whats the emergency? wait a bit and when it is rolling away down hill then apply it. On a serious note I doubt that little red switch would be the first thing to pop into my mind in the event of throttle lock, tipping over, me passing out while driving and having the passenger take over etc. It is nice to have but tip over sensors are for tipped over motorcycles, I would be far more likely to reach for the ignition switch if my throttle locked, and unfortunately if I passed out while riding the passenger wouldn't stand much of a chance taking over control by flipping the kill switch and grabbing control. Now if a big giant bird swooped down and attempted to steal my bike that red switch would be first in my mind. That switch is pretty much like an apendix more trouble than they are worth ok maybe I an a little oppinionated Al

My inbred red neck hillbilly neighbors were given a free house by the government because they virtually destroyed the last one they had. The one condition was they remove their old house. Instead of knocking it down and hauling it away they just bulldozed it into a pile of vinyl siding asphault shingles and fiberglass insulation, then set fire to it. When I came home they were roasting hot dogs over those toxic flames. occasionally throwing on another batt of insulation for seasoning. Wouldn't have been so bad but the neighbors on the other side of me went over to join them at the weenie roast. Al

there is a mute trigger switch on the forward side of the hand grip on the clutch side, you can't see it when you are riding but yuor index finger should find it ok. Thats it for a mute button as far as I know. Al

how would you fix this
motorcycle_1300 replied to motorcycle_1300's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
everytime I look at the bike I see that scratch...now. To tell the truth I have no idea how long it has been there. Most of my tools and things I use on a regular basis have wear marks, scratches etc, so I guess this is just a sign of use, gonna get one of those wax crayons they sell for furniture scratches and then try to ignore the scratch. you know I had 11 bikes wedged into my garage this winter It could easily have come from that Al -
The other day I was cleaning my bike and noticed a deep scratch on the rear of my trunk. looks like somebody may have keyed the bike. I am sure if I backed into something hard enough to make that scratch I would have noticed. How would you fix a deep scratch in the plastic. this is on a 2007 Midnight Venture. scratch appears to be light grey so assume the trunk is really grey plastic painted black. if it is black paint it will be hard to match. First I want to thank Freebird for his excelent how to on fixing the class controller board. I had nothing on my class display, most of the time. occasionally I would show 0 psi and then an e4 error then the display would go blank. I tried the solder fix and now when I switch to acc position my display lights up showing front rear manual auto on the left side and 0 psi I can select med hi or low or switch to auto mode momentarily then it goes into an E4 error. after 30 seconds or so everything recycles through the same sequence. I can hear a relay click under the trunk every time the display cycles but no compresor comes on, should I be able to hear the compressor if my pressure is too low IE: 0 psi. Looking at the wiring diagram I see a two connector plug going to the pump as well as a larger multi connector plug just upstream of the plug for the pump. I assume the compressor is under the trunk and these connectors are also in that area. can anybody tell me where the class relay is and the connector asociated with it. Where is the compressor and it's connector are located. and where the large multi connector plug just upstream is located. do I remove just the trunk, or also the seat? Again thanks Freebird, and thanks in advance to anybody who can help with my questions Al

I am going to have to dissapoint you here, I have not done much riding on the 92 VR. I picked it up as a project bike, have never even had it registered. The only riding I have done on it was mid night test rides to see how much more work I needed to do to get it on the road. I am retiring Jan 1 and have run out of time to finish fixing up this bike. I do think the 92 looks classier than the wing but the wing is a dozen years newer with 6oocc extra. Both bike bodies are made of plastic pannels. Even though the wing is a dozen years newer the plastic on the venture polishes up to a like new appearance, and so does the wing. If you are tall 6' plus and old with knees that don't like to be in one position for hours at a time I would think twice about a wing, unfortunately the 92vr has the same drawback Thats the primary reason I have chosen tho sell the three I wish to sell and keep my 2nd gen Venture midnight It is big enough for a tall man 6'1" 34" inseam 200lbs Al

Risers might help and then add a backrest. Get off the bike every hour or so and walk around fill a tank drain the other. 5 min is easy on the back, knees, shoulders, wrists Al

I have both a 2004 Goldwing and a 2007 Venture Midnight. For me the Venture is my long distance ride of choice. The goldwing is smooth and quiet but lacks the room and creature comfort of the Venture Midnight. the I put three times the miles per year on the Venture compared to the goldwing. Goldwing 15k miles Venture 45Kmiles BTW For Sale: 2004 Goldwing $12,300, 15K miles Very good shape, but will need tires. If I ever figure out how to post pictures on this site I will upload them. Here is the Craigs list posting http://burlington.craigslist.org/mcy/2997726600.html while I am at it 1992 Venture Royale: http://burlington.craigslist.org/mcy/3042239012.html 2008 FJR 1300: http://burlington.craigslist.org/mcy/3042239012.html Al

I am getting ready to try the solder connection fix, but am greatfull for the pictures of the bypass fix. If I have to resort to the bypass fix, what Kind of pressure are you using? Thanks Al -
I usually pack up the motorhome, my wifes bike and mineand spend a week, however this year only had one free day so just went to the vendors and marveled at how many Chrome geegaws there are, how many different harley logos you can see, and how many ways you can wear leather. There are some great organized rides you can participate in, Even better just go out rt 8 and hang on sort of the half marathon equivilant of the dragon. I have done baloon rides, white water rafting, Boat tours. rodeos, cave tours etc while there. And oh yes marathon eating. Many great riding demos by various drill teams. There are also manufacturer demo rides Al

I think it is something like a 565, doesn't say anywhere on it what model bought it from a vendor on amazon, I think it is a refurb unit of somekind but has worked well for three years. I turn it on tune the stereo to an empty frequency and then ride with the unit in one of the side bags in the little storage area near the latch. directions come through the sound system loud and clear, have never missed hearing it telling me it was recalculating. I don't need to see the display, I am not taking my eyes off the road to squint at a sun washed out little display. My bosses son had a gps that used Ozzi Osbourn's voice, was always telling him he was friggin lost man Al

My provider is verizon and actually there is no coverage at my house. However I bought a network extender that connects to my cable modem. It essentially provides my house(and my neighbors Maybe) a very local cell tower I get 5 bars now anywhere arround my house I make calls and send recieve texts etc. everything I would normally do while actually in a cell range. The big draw back is when your cable acts up You can't call for assistance as your cell phone will not be working either Al

I occasionally use the rain x wipes that come in a little package like tissues. I only use it once in a while, I prefer the universal solvent for cleaning my windshield. I use water and lots of it then wipe the windshield dry using a lint free windshield cloth. about every 10th time I use a rain x wipe. this is on a 2007 Venture with stock Yamaha shield. I have seen no problems. Again at home I will soak a dish towel with waterand lay it across the windshield for 5-10 min shortly b4 I plan to head out then clean/dry uning a clean lint free cloth. On the road I just pour half a bottle of water over the windshield cleaning with you guessed it a clean lint free cloth, then dry it with another one. I am not sure the rain x does a lot for shedding rain, but maybe things would be worse if I wasn't using it. Al

Let your sone ride if he wants to but set some rules. he has to pay for everything. First the safety class(you might want to attend that too to see how he does and to unlearn some bad habits( Knew I had some but didn't realize how many I had picked up in 40 years, the safety course helped me get rid of some) but he has to pay for his course, buy the bike(you get veto over his choice)insure the bike and pay for the expenses of ownership. Insist on a family ride one night every one or two weeks(icecream runs seem to work well. You will be able to judge his ability during those rides. Now that I have told you how to raise your kids need any other advice
