I wonder what a new set of tires on that thing would cost. When you design a better mousetrap it should offer advantages to the old mousetrap. Not sure I want a motorcycle to go sideways

I would ask if they can be turned in for cash, or offer them to somebody I dislike

[ Watchout for all the oldies driving down there in the winter. I resemble that remark, which reminds me why does my left turn signal burn out a lot more than my right? jk- 17 replies

Brakepad we have chatted a couple times, Larry and Tammy are currently inactive in the group. tammy has shown up for a couple meetings, Larry has not been there for over a year. Larry's dad "Pops" passed away a little over a year ago. Larry was president when I joined the group, lead us through many long rides. I am afraid the chapter is slowly shrinking, but there is a small core group that shows up every thursday night for a ride and ice cream or dinner(tonight) there is usually a longer ride 200 miles or so every weekend. I will be retiring Nov 30, My wife and I are relocating as snow birds. We will be living DEC through June in Naples FL. I have checked the Star Touring web site and there are not a lot of chapters in Fl to say nothing of the Naples area. We would like to find some other Riders in that area who can enlighten us to places in the area to ride, things to see and just chat about bikes in general. Tried to see if I could somehow sort the members list here into somekind of geographic order without success so I am putting this out in public. Do you ride in the SW florida area, or know others who do and who might like to get together once in a while and ride? Al

A boy chained his bike to a tree, then went to fight WWI.
motorcycle_1300 replied to saddlebum's topic in Watering Hole
Whatever the case may be trees do not lift things off the ground. if you drive a nail into a tree at 3 feet off the ground that is where nit will always be 3 feet. the tree may grow out arround the nail but it will not lift it. Al -
Performance decrease out west?

The ride out to Stardays 3009 in Montana was a group if ten bikes a couple of the towns? we stopped at had only one gas pump and only e85 gas Al -
62years old 6'1 200lbs not bad if you are landing on the kick stand, lot harder from the stand side I would advise having somebody handy to flip the stand down as you go upright. If you are on a downhill side, put a for sale sign on it and start walking home. Actually if there is no one to help you shove it untill you have rotated it so you are not laying down hill, do whatever you can to minimize the scratching. then it is the same routine. dropped mine once while attempting to turn around on a dirt road with grass growing between the tire tracks the hump in the center was high enough that I couldn't get the stand down so there I amm back to the bike trying to turn arround and get my leg over the bike with nothing supporting it. did it but was shaking and sweating like a pig. After a dealer replaced my head gaskets (under warrenty) my right front cylinder was about 30 degrees cooler than the rest, the exhaust on that side was a little cooler. Long story short the dealer cracked my cam shaft on the right front cylinder. Bike idled rough, no power at lower rpm and backfired on deceleration. Ate gas but would still accelerate fast enough if you kept rpms up. Used a non contact infrared thermometer from sears to verify temp differences. How you can crack a camshaft by over torquing the bolts is beyond me but goes to show what persaverance can accomplish. Dealer claimed the bike was running fine this was my third royalstar so I knew better. Head gaskets replacement cost me nothing, but having another dealer repair the dammage cost me 800 and Yamaha refused to cover that under warrenty as it was damaged by improper repair work Al

Performance decrease out west?
motorcycle_1300 replied to BigLenny's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I normally ride in the 92 to 1000 feet above sea level when i rode out to stardays in 2009 found that in the 8000 foot level I was getting about 30% less mpg. but that was e85 gas two up all day long and fully loaded with clothing and supplies for a week Al -

Bike seems Unstable
motorcycle_1300 replied to Old Texan's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Input I need input. While it appears we have been discussing an old problem, we all gained a little from the discussion. One of the reasons I left the goldwing group was for being chastised for discussing an old post as if it was current. It was of interest to me and others who were activly discussing it even if it was old. Please don't think I am bashing you for pointing this out, your statement was far from the level of vitriol that came from tthe gw group Al -
Bike seems Unstable

I woulod check tire pressure, if thats good consider tires, even if they appear to have good tread, there could be internal seperation of the belts. I won't tell you what kind of tire is best or worst. I never seem to get over 7K on any tire either on my wing or My rsv and 5K on the fjr(but I know why on that one) after that consider steering head or swing arm if not that keep checking things from most likely to least likely. My wing has a little wobble but I know I need to replace the steering head bearings with roller bearings, but what you discribe on the rsv sounds like a tire issue to me Al -
OK startouring dealer search does not find all the dealers for the areas I checked, but it is a good place to start. the Yamaha corporate page will return a better list if you know a zip code for that area. Notice the bronze. silver and gold stars assigned to each dealership. keep in mind that the dealer who cracked my cam shaft and then claimed my bike was running right was a bronze star dealer I do not reccomend Lake city choppers, plattsburgh NY, I do reccomend Roadside power sports williston, VT(they diagnosed and fixed what the other dealer did certification qualifications below http://www.starmotorcycles.com/assets/common/blank.gifhttp://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/yta/img/tabs/YTAcertification_3.gifhttp://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/yta/img/tabs/techgrandprix_1.gifhttp://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/yta/img/tabs/toptechaward_1.gifhttp://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/yta/img/tabs/spacer.gifhttp://www.starmotorcycles.com/assets/common/blank.gifYamaha Technical Academy The Yamaha Technical Academy (YTA) is the cornerstone of Yamaha’s Technical Training Program. Although you report it as 11 curves in 318 miles the shirts say 11 curves in 831 miles. Having driven in florida I assume most of those 11 curves are U-turns

My wife would like to install a set of risers on her 2006 vstar1100 custom. Barrons has a set that gives 2" pull back without a rise that might work. It looks like all the control lines will still be usable. Anybody have any other suggestions. I put a set of Motorcycle Larry riser/triple clamps on my fjr and they worked great but can't seem to see anything for the 1100 there. If you have a riser in mind but it might need longer cables please let me know about them as well just warn me I will need longer cables. I think 2 inchs back and an inch or so up would be about right. Al

Lowering Footpegs
motorcycle_1300 replied to twigg's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I put a set of Motorcycle Larry lowered pegs on my FJR. Tended to scrape the pegs a bit more when I rode agressivly, other than that they worked great Al -
I am one of those exceptions that run 5th gear 40mph and up if I am on level ground. I do not experience lugging and if I am riding up a slight grade I will wait untill I get to about 50 before I shift to 5th. the yamaha manual would have you in 5th at 30 mph. typically I average 45 to 50 mpg running 87 octane regular. Most of my riding is an even mix of two lane 55mph and freeway 70mph, round town well through town only takes a moment. Al

That wire comming out of the top of the battery is for the framistat, sort of a digital replacement for the rebazorber. as I am sure has been mentioned it is a battery fluid senson. the direct replacement batteries have a hole for it. there is a mod where you add some resistance and connect it to the battery terminal, look for the thread for details Al

Straight pipes?
motorcycle_1300 replied to jeremy_abfalter's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
it would sound horrible, but then I am not one of the wake babies and scare little old ladies crowd. I had a set of bub pipes on my 2001 Royalstar they had a mello9w rumble but would roar when I got on it. I far prefer the stock pipes on my 2007 midrsv
