Yamaha's new 950 ...maybe we are next??
motorcycle_1300 replied to Atoolnut's topic in Watering Hole
[. We all know HD is the king of motorcycles that's why we compare everything to them. Not sure I would call Harley the King, there are very few kings but a lot of sheep. We do not compare all bikes to Harleys, we wonder why they are popular, sort of like why vanilla Ice cream outsells the other flavors instead of the bourdeux cherry chocolate chunk I am eating right now. As for the king, I just looked down at my shirt it appears to say king of the road Royal star Venture. Ok I agree if you look at numbers you will see Harleys outselling the others, why I will never understand, I have occasionaly owned other bikes including Harleys, I allowed myself to be convinced they were better via peer pressure, never kept them very long. The yamahas I have owned have been much more reliable and more comfortable for my tastes. That's why I keep hoping Yamaha will move away from being a wanna be Harley lite builder. Al -
Yamaha's new 950 ...maybe we are next??
motorcycle_1300 replied to Atoolnut's topic in Watering Hole
more like a skirtster, just another warmed over leftover idea, looks like a twenty year old idea. not much different from a Virago 950. I wish Yamaha would stop trying to be Harley lite, and make some innovative bikes, maybe mount some of their sport bike engines in a cruiser frame. I bet Yamaha would be supprized how many would eagerly give up that V twin look and sound for a smooth running thourobred. The 1300 deluxe is at least a cruising touring bike the ladies can fit on put a 150 hp engine from a FJR on a luxury tourer and I would be fighting to be first in line:fingers-crossed-emo Al -
My wife and I have a pair of the hawk modular helmets with built in Bluetooth communicatoirs. the blue tooth functions work very well both for bike to bike communication as well as pairing with various devices. good sound quality, way better than my old chatterbox units. The helmet is a good low end helmet, mine fit very well had to swap for a slightly smaller size for my wife( I had taken advice to buy one size larger than measured size) so my wifes was fine as measured mine xxl fit well but by measurement an xl should have fit. Latches work well but clear shield was a little hard to flip, a little work with a file on the notches fixed that) the vents drove me nuts for months, they made serious noise in either the open or closed position. mostly vibration, found if I played with them I could find a quiet position. Eventually I just put electrical tape over the top vent and was happy. If it gets hot enough to need to open I just peel the tape. If I know it is going to be hot I leave the hawk at home and use my half helmet. Al

I have always been fond of gthe Canadian Maritimes. Stompin Tom Conners was one of the artists I always looked for when I traveled north. The other was John Allen Cameron. Al

I currently own three have owned as many as 5 running at a time but only three right now. Wife owns 2 right now, max of three previous winter family bikes numbered 13 in the garage. I moved south so trimmed my bike ownership to a minimum, don't think I can get along with fewer than three bikes. Bikes are like golf, you could beat the ball with any old club, but using the right club for the conditions makes everything more fun ( I am too young to play golf) Al

went to Ava Maria today for the BBq blues and brews get together. The bands although unknown were pretty good, they had sampling of micro brews so I grabbed three 2 oz samples, grabbed some pulled pork sandwich and sat and listened for a couple hours. West coast Muscle had some of their cars on display. while walking back to the bike I spotted two other ventures in the parking area. one another midnight, and the other was a dark silver two tone. Any body from here if so sorry I missed you Al

Mail was sent 9:00am I picked up on it 11:00am somebody from Argentina had logged in as me. Changed my password deleted all the contacts ( will import them again in a few days. Requested Yahoo block login from outside the USA . Yahoo had flagged this as a possible problem when I checked my account activity, but had not yet notified me Al

Did you recently get an e-mail from me? I did not send it. I hadn't accessed that account for a couple weeks. However it looks like I sent a message from my Motorcycle_1300@yahoo.com account to one of my other accounts. I didn't open the attachment so can't tell you what it was. I only use that e-mail account for messages from this site and craigslist. I am sure it was probably not hijacked from this site, and was more likely someone on craigslist who messed with my email. I have deleted all my contacts for the Motorcycle_1300 account so if you got one from me it should not happen again Don't open any email from me delete it prior to opening Al

ever since I got my first ipod, and tried loading my wma files to the ipod and it arbitrarily converted them to the imf format or whatever it was, but that format is incompatable with everything else I have. Didn't even ask me it just went ahead and did it. I still think the old Atari ST had the best operating system, guess that alone says something about me Al

after 12 years my trusty Sony Vaio died so I replaced it yesterday, so far my opinion of windows eight is it might be an ok phone os it sure is lacking in user configurability. Might get better later but frustrating is best I can say for it. I don't want a bunch of xbox subscription serveces, or Apps, I just want programs I can just run Al

First time I ever went fishing in salt water, I went out in the miss Islamorada, caught several King Mackrel. there is nothing like catching a 4 foot long fish shapped like a Baracuda to get you to go back again and again. My last trip out was disappointing, the skipper on that boat was a short Irishman from Brooklyn, with the stump of a cigar in the corner of his mouth. Apparently he likes Porgies and we were catching them, but I can catch bigger bass than a Porgie in my back pond. When I mentioned how much fun I had catching kings, he said nobody eats Kings so if I start catching them I just move to another spot. Arrogant little twerp forgot some people just fish for fun. Avoid sundays as he is just a fill in skipper and usually works sunday. Al

personally I like the keys, but see no reason to go to key west more than once, unless you are looking to be able to say you have been to the southern most point. Stay in the mid keys, Lime tree bay resort on long key beach front, pool and hot tub fishing pier, free use of hotel Kayaks(glass bottom so you can see through). Eat at the wooden spoon in marathon(breakfast or lunch) If you want real good real expensive eat at ziggy and mad dogs on islamorada. Lazy days one or two in Islamorada or marathon is good reasonably priced. Burdines is a grill on top of a marina in Marathon, great burgers and sweet potato fries great view. Porky's on the bay has good BBQ. Nobody has good beer down there unless you like Lite Go to Bahia Honda state park for beach. Take side roads on Big pine look for key deer( sort of like tame miniature white tails) Go deep sea fishing, Bud and Mary's marina Islamorada $65 a day per person on their party boat Consider snorkeling at either Bahia honda, or John Penecamp park Key largo Al

states with the lowest cost of living
motorcycle_1300 replied to CaptainJoe's topic in Watering Hole
Having recently retired I left NY and previously VT due to out of control governments overreaching regulation and cold weather. I read through the list but am pretty happy with my choice anyway. Roads could have a few more curves. Beer could come in some flavor other than Lite. I do dislike how articles about ten best don't just put a list upfront, not have us page through a bunch of verbose prose just to get the basic info, but thanks for posting it. Al -
The Wife is looking for her own wheels
motorcycle_1300 replied to Wade 2000's topic in Watering Hole
When I met my wife several years ago she had never been on a motorcycle. I asked her to join me on a trip out to Montana for Star Days, she hesitantly agreed . she decided to take the motorcycle safety class with the intent of being a better passenger. when she completed the class she came to me and asked for help in picking out a bike. Her first bike was a 2004 honda shadow, but she was uncomfortable riding it due to the weight. Over the winter we found a Virago 250 which turned out to be a great confidence builder, but was not designed for freeway riding . she rode that for one summer and then the following summer went back to the shadow, last year she picked up a vstar 1100 which she rides now. now for bennifits. I usually get about 45 mpg on my venture she gets a bit over 50 on her bike so between us we are getting about 95 mpg while we ride...... Get a helmet with a built in blue tooth communications. can be used for bike to bike as well as the usual devices . you can get them from leather up for less than $200 each or better quality helmets for more. there are add on blue tooth systems as well. Personally I would avoid the chatter box systems. with communications you can warn her of upcomming hazzards or turns plan stops etc if you both have bikes get a pair of good travel bags to strap on behind the driver ahead of the sissy bar for good ballance. hit the road and go for a week or two before you run out of clothes, two bikes increases your range, over everything in one bag. If you are touring with two bikes aqnd one breaks down you don't have to wait for a good samaritan you just double up and go for help. Maintenance expenses registration, insurance goes up. If you haul your bikes anywhere you will need aq larger trailer bigger truck. for most it all adds up to more fun as one of you isn;t watching the world go by or the back of a helmet Al -
Help with wind hitting passanger (wife)
motorcycle_1300 replied to bobder41's topic in Watering Hole
grow a little taller and break wind for her. get her her own bike with windshield. I break wind for my wife all the time. all kidding aside is the wind going over the top and hitting her or comming in from the side. there is a product called dragon wings primarily for goldwings but they can deflect air further off to the side and give a smoother quieter ride. also on my FJR1300, I had a tall cal scientific shiels with a vent near the bottom which caused a positive pressure behind the shield instead of a low pressure area and cut down a lot on buffeting. My goldwing has a vent in the shield which I can open or close at will seems to cut buffeting when open as well, same idea as the FJR positive pressure bubble behind the shield deflects a lot of turbulence Al -
I have a 2004 goldwing (wouldn't bother to replace that) and a 2007 Venture midnight would replace it in an instant if it dissapeared. Additionally I would buy a new Venture right now if it came with a smooth quiet 6 speed transmission, and or fuel injection. the venture averages 12 thousand miles a year and the wing about three. have also owned 1982 aspencade, 1992 venture Royale, 1999 royalstar plus a handfull of other bikes which do not apply to luxuary touring, The venture is by far my favorite bike. Yesterday I was at lake Tafford Florida testing out my new to me boat. While draining the water bout of the boat(somebody who will not be named forgot to put one of the hull plugs in) I looked up and a titanium and plack 2001 Venture is just pulling into the launch area. I mentioned to him that I hadn't seen many Ventures since moving to Florida. this guy had trailered hiss bike down a couple months ago and was living in Florida half the year the other half he returns to the south shore of Montreal. he lives about 50 miles from my summer home. looking for a part source Vstar 1100 brake hose
motorcycle_1300 replied to motorcycle_1300's topic in General Tech Talk
thanks Taz will do -
I recently put a set of risers on my wifes vstar1100 custom all the cables were long enough with the exception of the brake line from the master cylinder down to the splitter. It is useable but too tight in my opinion. Tried ordering one from the local dealer but has been on back order for a while, I keep getting excuses but no part.. This is just one line current one is 21 inch long need a couple more(story of my life) inchs longer. I can order kits for longer hoses cables etc but seems expensive for really needing only one line. any suggestions? at one time I saw a link on this site where you could get the parts breakdown for any yamaha motorcycle. I am thinking the line from a Raider or some other model would fit and be longer. Anybody remember the site for the part numbers? Al

Brakepad, i don't want to step on your toes but thought this would be a good place to ask about a blue Venture i saw near Hickory pass near Bonita springs/ Sanibel area Sunday. Anybody from here? I was driving the truck with my Kayaks in the back so whoever it was probably wouldn't have recognized me as a fellow rider Al
