Sounds like fun!! Let us know when you get here!!
-
Congrats and best of luck to you two!!! We're around about Truro most weekends - Truro always seems to end up being there somewhere!!!
-
Yes, doing the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton is a great trip!! If you come up this way next year, be sure to come by if you can. We'd love to meet people from away and are always happy to act as tour guide if we can.!
-
Don't you know Nova Scotians are just displaced Newfies? Heck, Newfies are the salt of the earth, best people on the planet. I'd love to take a trip over there some day. Stupid ferry is long and expensive, though.
-
LOL I had to look up your flag (hover mouse on it) to figure out where you were!! A Nova Scotia is one of the most gorgeous provinces in Canada, on the far east coast by the Atlantic Ocean. I've lived here all my life and love it.
-
Thank you, Goose. That's great info to know!!! I'm giving it to Mike to read now and we're hoping to go out for a five or six hour drive this weekend so it'll be a good chance to see how it feels and what, if anything, needs to be adjusted.
-
Thanks for all the great Sturgis pics!! Doesn't the trailer have to have lights on it that work? I know here in NS, any trailer has to have working brake lights, signal lights and tail lights on them far as I know.

We love to go for rides with others but it's not always easy to hook up and arrange things. If anyone would be interested in going for a ride with us this weekend, let me know - phone and email are in my profile or just post here. By the way, I'm 46 and Mike's 43. We like to stop for breaks, have meals, enjoy the scenery. We will NOT be taking the highways. We will NOT be speeding more than 10 km over the posted limit (Mike drives for a living, ticket's not worth it). We go for rides for fun, not a speed race. (Had to say it, so many around here seem to love to ZOOOOM and we don't ) We don't smoke but I generally like to stop every hour to two hours max for at least 20 mins to a half hour. I am a morning person, though, so I like to get going early and be back by suppertime so we can feed our dogs though it's not written in stone!! We're considering leaving here around 8:30 tomorrow morning from Dartmouth then to Windsor to Berwick to Chester Basin and back, cutting through on the Aylesford Road. If anyone wants to come, let us know!!! ALL WELCOME!! WEATHER PERMITTING, of course. Here's the route: Map: http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=43+Smallwood+Avenue,+Dartmouth,+Nova+Scotia&daddr=Berwick,+Nova+Scotia+to:Aylesford+Road,+Aylesford,+NS+B0P+1C0+(Fox+Mountain+Camping+Park)+to:44.9354618,-64.7129805+to:Franey+Corner,+Nova+Scotia+to:New+Ross,+Nova+Scotia+to:Chester+Basin,+Nova+Scotia+to:44.63474,-63.66345+to:43+Smallwood+Avenue,+Dartmouth,+Nova+Scotia&geocode=FYQnqgIdix03_CnjnjS7TCRaSzF2q5K2f1ZTfw%3BFf1erwIdMjUk_CklPJOktFxYSzGcsoJT1TCJ4w%3BFQKzrQIduoEk_CFYo0Fa-YNw-Q%3BFSWprQId7I4k_Ck7LDoIO0ZYSzGZQf8JYyFT_w%3BFTR7qgIdVEgl_Ck9_psIvDJYSzHzjpqRfFG1ig%3BFfahqgIdNXgo_CmJmAsG0c5ZSzEVkpLkcUswYw%3BFTsAqAIdLbsq_ClFAxhBj9xZSzG3zNNMOZKJsA%3BFXQSqQIdppI0_Cn3CMW90yFaSzEjMdSGFCgaTg%3BFYQnqgIdix03_CnjnjS7TCRaSzF2q5K2f1ZTfw&hl=en&mra=ls&via=3,7&dirflg=h&sll=44.72332,-64.690247&sspn=1.313325,2.425232&vpsrc=0&ie=UTF8&ll=44.8325,-64.151917&spn=1.310844,2.425232&z=9

Yes, that's us. We barely even lean in turns most of the time. We just ride around for fun, slow on most turns and there are very, very few sharp turns on our roads really. Thank you for the info, though. That makes sense - that you'd get tired if you have to use more muscles (even infinitesimally) for every turn. By the end of the day, you'd be tired as heck. What do you keep in the front forks??

They can do a LOT of damage if they're really good at it. You can end up having to hire a lawyer and pay atrocious fees before it's all said and done. Here in Canada, you will not be responsible for bank accounts, loans, credit card uses, etc., once you prove when the theft occurred and that you did not make the transactions. From all I've heard, that's not usually that difficult and it doesn't take too terribly long to do. If they go further, though, and get a mortgage on your house or get arrested and then THEIR fingerprints are now identified as YOU (he used your identity, after all), it can get very complicated. I'm not paranoid about it and I expect lenders to require proof of identification but if you're dealing with a reputable lender such as a bank, they all have privacy clauses that prevent them from using that information in any other way. It's pretty safe that way here, far as I know. After all, would you lend money to someone if you had no proof of who they were? I sold something through Kijiji and they paid through PayPal then I mailed the item to Ontario. I got my money (less some fees, unfortunately) and hopefully they will get their item fine. I have the proof that I mailed it so they can't go back through PayPal and get a refund because I insured it and I sent it. Paypal, also, is pretty safe though I doubt I'd send it out of country (from an ad, not eBay or something). After all, I have their name, their address, their email address, etc. They sent the money to me, I got it, it's in my bank account now so it's rock solid that way. Email money transfer is another way to send money safely these days - just requires an email address. Common sense works most of the time. Some are getting way too paranoid, though, and won't pay bills using a computer, won't buy something online, etc., etc., etc. I've been using eBay, paying bills online, banking online for many, many years now without ever having any trouble. The one time someone used our credit card was buying gas at an old fashioned gas station. Guess the attendant copied the card somehow. One phone call and it was taken care of, I never paid it. Done.

Can anyone else chime in on the air pressure issue? I see in the manual it says, for softest ride, use zero air pressure in both the front forks and the rear. I can't see the owner's manual saying you can do this if it makes the bike unstable. EDIT: Maybe not unstable but wallowy in the turns, harder to handle, etc. Thanks, Goose!!! Any experiences with this would be very much appreciated!!!!!

The higher gear you are in, the better gas mileage you are getting in general terms.
-
Thank goodness you were in the car!!! Glad you're okay.
-
Me too!!!!
-
Even me the newb knew about that thing a ma jig!!

Wow, 14 months at a time? How horrible!! You should be very proud of them and it's great they're going together. That's a long time to be away from home. Thank your boys for doing an honorable job and we'll all be hoping they come home safe and sound.

It's like that here in Nova Scotia, too, which is the number one reason I'd never live in the United States. I love that - our dollar is almost equal to or worth MORE than the US dollar yet the prices are still up to DOUBLE that of the US. Gotta love that free trade thingy, eh? LOL

Passenger highway pegs
myminpins replied to myminpins's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
They may not tuck under completely but there's room behind the passenger floor boards for them to go. I may get larger passenger floor boards, too, but we'll see what it looks like and how the installation goes and I'll post pics when it's done -
That's why some put right in the ad that they WILL ship to Canada and to contact them for shipping rates. I've done that many times and OF COURSE we'll pay the cost of shipping. That's just life here. Most agree to ship it via USPS. I don't think I've ever had anyone say no, actually. I remember four or five years ago the convincing I had to do to a vendor in the United States to ship us our motorcycle jackets, which we still wear all the time. They were heavy duty thick leather, both had zip out linings made of Thinsulate and they were really nice - perfect motorcycle style for us with zip up vents, zip up cuffs, etc., etc., etc. Anything even close to something like that around here was in excess of $800 EACH. Ouch!! These jackets he was selling were $350 EACH. HUGE HUGE difference. I talked back and forth to him over email for quite awhile because he was very reluctant to ship to Canada as people would buy from him then want to exchange because they didn't fit or they changed their mind or something and he didn't want to deal with that. I assured him that would NOT happen with me. I gave him our measurements to the inch and what size I thought we'd need and we talked some more. Shipping those jackets cost about $60 at the time but, for a savings of over $600, it was well worth it to me. He finally gave in and shipped the jackets to me. I love those jackets. As I said, we still wear them all the time. I rarely purchase anything heavy from the US, though, as it's usually not worth it. I need a shock air pump, though, and found what I need on eBay for $36 WITH SHIPPING. Here, it'll cost me $49 plus 15% HST = $56. That's a savings of $20. I haven't decided yet but will probably go with eBay. When the discount is $10 or more, it's an easy choice. Everyone who harps "Buy Canadian" - sure, when you put your dang prices down. Until then, sorry, but I'm going where it's cheapest. Mike's a trucker - we don't have lots of money!!! My electronics almost all come from Hong Kong. For stuff here that costs $15, I can get from there for literally less than $5 with free shipping. Yup, I have to wait but for stuff like screen savers for my phone, extra cords, cases, etc., etc., I'm buying where it's dead cheap. They want $15 for ONE screen saver for our phones here. Ridiculous. They're $3 for FIVE from Hong Kong. Sorry but, unless I can afford it, I'm going where the prices are cheapest. If I could afford it, sure, I'd buy Canadian. Doubt that'll happen any time soon. If you won't ship to Canada, there's usually someone else who will. For those who don't know, you CAN purchase a mailbox address with a civic address number (not P.O. Box) from many places so that you have a US address if need be. That way, places that won't ship to Canada, you get it shipped there then they ship it to Canada for you. Yes, it costs money but, if you want that option, it's available. I had it when we travelled to the US all the time via truck because I had a Verizon cell phone. Can't have one without a US address so I had a US address. Their cell phone plans were dirt cheap (still are, actually) compared to ours. To get US calling here is atrocious. So I had two cell phones. Switched them at the border and I was good. That US phone was so cheap it was pathetic. Some century we may have those rates here but I'm not holding my breath!!!

The standard back rest with the detachable purse/pouch on it. You can see it in our pic of the bike and the few pics I'm attaching here. I can ask him if he'd like to sell it if you're interested.

Passenger highway pegs
myminpins replied to myminpins's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Well, when I get them on my passenger floor boards, I'll post pics. Those are all I could find though so sorry if it led you to believe incorrectly. I am getting them for the passenger floorboards. He has Kurayakan highway pegs on his front crash bars. -
Who cares?

I jogged in my 20s but not since. Lots of docs say it's very, very hard on your body (knees, ankles, etc.) but I do try to walk at least 20 mins or more per day. I know that's not nearly enough and, 10 years ago, I'd never ever have been this sedentary and would have been disgusted at myself being so sedentary but things change. Mike works nights and takes the car so I'm home by myself from 3:00 in the afternoon every day until 6:00 a.m. or so the next morning. In the winter, that gets really old really fast. I've got lazier and more sedentary but it's boring to walk alone (I used to do it when I was younger) and I just don't care enough any more to force myself to get up and out and moving when I have nowhere to go, ya know? So I do try to walk every day but jog? I'll never jog again, especially after breaking my ankle last fall. Of course, when I was a kid, I always said I'd kill myself if I ever got this fat so... yeah, things change!!!!

Mike has a wicked curve in his back and prefers to ride WITHOUT a backrest, which I love 'cause it gives me more room! He drove ours with the backrest and found it pushed him forward so we removed it and he loves it now. Works for me!
