  1. Don't know if it helps but the previous owner of mine made in the intake holes larger using a Dremel tool.
  2. I hear the noise mainly from the clutch area. That's why I figured it was the clutch basket everyone talks about. Last time the tire was changed about 1500 miles ago everything was lubed and inspected and no abnormal wear was noticed by the technician. (Not saying a whole lot but...)
  3. I've ridden on virtually every road worth riding on. But here's the beauty of that. First off, the scenery while the same always seems different; different clouds, different feel of the air, different lighting etc. etc. Secondly, I know the roads like the back of my hand. They almost become like a race track to me. There is something quite comforting knowing most of the corners and routes. I can out ride most folks on them simply because I am so familiar with them. I have examples of just about every kind of corner there is here on this island and this allows me to practice them at will, mostly (see #3). There are some very challenging roads here. Maybe I'll make a video one day... Third, this island is big enough that I can not ride on one part of the island for months! I hadn't been on that lower route through Volcano in about 8 months. Although I know almost every inch of the road, it still felt new to me. I was on my bike for about 4.5 hours yesterday. I attached a map of the Big Island. If you look towards the top of the island you'll see the word "KAWAIHAE", it is right below the number 27. I basically live where the 7 is. I rode to the right (as you're looking at the map) and got on 190 and went south to 200 (Saddle Road). This road is about 5600' and traverses between the two main mountains. Once in Hilo I stopped to run an errand and then continued on Route 11 though Volcano national Park and on around the island to Kailua-Kona. You can see Whittington Beach Park on the map. That's around where I took the picture from. Once in Kona I got back on the 190 and headed home. I was on my bike for about 4.5 hours yesterday. I'll post more pics for you freezin' folk over there on the Mainland. I didn't realize y'all would enjoy looking at them. I used to live in Ohio (Hamilton) and Massachussets (Fitchburg/Leominster) so I know winter...and hate it just like most of you.
  4. Can this rear end whine be differentiated from the clutch basket by pulling in the clutch and coasting? When you pull in the clutch and coast, if the rear end is bad should you still hear the whine? Mine whines but doesn't when coasting with the clutch pulled in. I figured it was the clutch basket and I don't really much worry about it (if it is).
  5. I was out riding today and stopped at one of my favorite view sites on the southern end of the Big Island. For those who know, this is right above Whittington Beach Park in the District of Ka'u. It was a GLORIOUS day! To the right you'll see the plume that is emitted from the Pu'u O'o vent at Kilauea Volcano. It is responsibly for all the Vog (google it) here on the Big Island. On the right side you'll see (not very well though) the steam plume from where the lava is entering the ocean. Basically the island is growing. In about 100,000 years that's gonna be one heck of a nice beach!
  6. One of the benefits of using stabilizer is not needing to drain the carbs. I smear a bit a grease on each terminal.
  7. Only way to lower your final drive ratio would be to put a taller rear tire on it. Not sure if one is even made that will fit, though.
  8. Not to be viewed as inconsiderate, I'll offer mine for you to use as well. It's an 2007 Wells Cargo 6wx10lx7h enclosed trailer. It may be a PITA to get though.
  9. I bought my bike pre-owned. For a long time I thought the gas cap was black from the factory! Seems the PO painted it black. It wasn't until I asked about a chrome one that folks told me they came from the factory chrome. Might wanna break out some spray paint and have at it.
  10. Hmmm...you make a very good point! My fanny has been fried by my seat more than once!
  11. I dunno...to me, tan seats just don't belong on a bike regardless of when it came off the assembly line.
  12. Mine does the same thing. I've used synthetic grease to help smooth out the action. It lasts a month or two. That actuator "rod" really needs a rubber tip.
  13. Something I didn't think of until yesterday; replacing my 8" wheels with 12" is going to raise my trailer and make slope down to the bike. Right now it rides level when loaded and this is with only 1 leaf spring as I took out the other. I think I'm just gonna get 2 chrome 8" wheels and use one of my stock wheels as the spare. However, it's good info to know that the bolt pattern is the same. In the future I may change the suspension to independent suspension and I never knew the exact bolt pattern of the wheels. I looked at Piggy Backer's website but didn't see a link for spare parts.
  14. Can I use these wheels to replace my 8" wheels? I went looking to get a spare tire/wheel but, like a crow, was attracted to the chrome. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=97182
  15. I have the Harbor Freight trailer with the 8" wheels and I recently busted up my fender after hitting a sheep. I'd like to replace with plastic (to help reduce weight) but wanted to find out if anyone who has done the same can make any recommendations.
  16. Yeah...we got snow yesterday, too. The top of Mauna Kea was covered.
  17. Good Lord! Who of us really need our MPG figures to be that exact? That's just too much pressure... Might as well add...you gotta ride the same way, on the same roads, with the same air pressures, same ambient temps, same wind conditions, same throttle settings, same speed, same day etc. etc. That's the only way to get a true comparison. I figure if you get anywhere between 36 & 41 you're within the acceptable range.
  18. Listen, if you have air in the system in which bleeding would solve then the handle would not engage the brakes FARTHER away from the bar. You would be squeezing it in farther. Save your time bleeding and instead redo the job and check & touch everything. Maybe something isn't seated correctly.
  19. The drive shaft?? I can't even see mine with the bags on. Are you talking about the rear gear housing on the wheel? (Can't really see that either... )
  20. Wow, that's pretty cool! ...(hardy, har, har)...
  21. Can anyone go into detail on this? Am I reading that the Harley has a rear cylinder deactivation feature??
  22. Uhhh...won't it look like an RSTD? Well...with a RSV front fairing. There's a picture of one over at Yamaha where they have pictures of owner's rides. `````````````````````````````` Canuk, doing what you described, will I lose the radio function?
  23. What happens to all the radio controls when you remove the trunk? I'd like to be able to have a sort-of quick disconnect for it. It'd be nice to remove it when I'm pulling my trailer to cut down on weight.
  24. So today I'm riding to Kailua-Kona with my trailer in tow. Had to go to a meeting for the Ironman Triathlon being held here tomorrow (that's another thread...). So I'm moving about 65 when I see from the corner of my eyes a flock/herd/group/bunch of sheep running at a 45* angle towards me! They must have broken out of their pen or something. I swerve into the oncoming lane and the front right side of my trailer slams into one of them!! It bent my fender into the tire and the edge of it started to burn through the tire. The wheel then went over the sheep (I guess; I wasn't really looking) and I was able to get back into my lane and stop about 200' down the road at the entrance to the Big Island Country Club. I bent the fender back (wow those are tough!) and saw that my tire was okay. I changed my underwear and looked back to see the sheep laying in the road. I didn't bother to go back. It wasn't there a few hours later when I passed by again. Bottom line...I screwed up. I didn't sound my Stebel. I didn't speed up to reduce their angle of "attack" nor did I slow down really. I just swerved. Basically I feel God saved my bacon today...wish he would have done something about my underwear. For the record, I DID NOT go doo-doo my pants.
  25. Wow! I see why it is recommended! Pulls much better. when the trailer hits bumps they don't transmit to the bike as bad. It seems to track better behind me better and it's easier to back up. Tomorrow's the high speed test around on-coming trucks.
