The *OFFICIAL* Gas Mileage Poll
Monsta replied to Monsta's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
So far 21 views, 8 "votes". C'mon fellas....it's the most asked question on ANY motorcycle or automotive forum. Let's end repetition once and for-all! -
Seems there are lots of threads about fuel consumption. I thought it might be good for new(er) folks (like me) to have one definitive thread about what can be expected for MIXED mileage. Now obviously everyone should know that "Your Mileage May Vary" (YMMV) but if we got a consensus here it'd be cool. So I set up this poll for users to vote ONCE for the mileage number that is closest to their AVERAGE MIXED MPG. Not your best, not the least, no varying conditions like mountains, towing, two-up, fuel type used etc. Just normal average mileage say over the last 5 tanks. This would make a great sticky, too. *hint hint*

Folding backrest for stock seats?
Monsta replied to Monsta's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I looked at the DiamondR one last night. Must be nice to have that kind of money fellas. I almost crapped my pants when I saw how much they wanted just to hold up my back! I only paid $300 for BOTH seats! $200+ is just too much for what you get. A majority of DiamondR's items are overpriced, IMHO. Heck... to be fair, I guess that can be said for most motorcycle accessories, though. -
Anyone running Motolights?
Monsta replied to Smokee's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Holy smokes! That's a load o' dough for those!!:eek: They must work good. With the higher wattage (35W) passing lights and my regular headlight I don't find myself in the need of more light. More light is always good but my setup really lights up the road. Important when you live in a place that regulates the light pollution due to all the telescopes up on the mountain here. They really don't like light pollution so we have minimal streetlights (and even those are orange) that makes the island quite dark at night. Course I have a completely different headlight reflector than stock so maybe that's why.- 10 replies

Folding backrest for stock seats?

Thanks for the info fellas! Yes, I wanted one that folds forward to help the passenger get on and off. -
Help finding carb. sinc. tool.
Monsta replied to a topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Get about 10-12 feet of tubing, a 2 or 4x4 to attach it to and then fill with gear oil.* Works great. *Not complete instructions, of course. -
Is there such a thing out there? I sold my RoadSofa and got some pillow tops. I think I miss the backrest but don't want a fixed one. Is there a folding one out there?

Judging by the picture, I think you'd be better off buying seats & a windshield first. Rich, that "B" meant bias-ply...wonder why it wasn't on subsequent tires.

Cupholder... I can answer that one. I got a simple bottle holder form K-Mart. The kinda that goes on a bicycle. It has a rubber adjustable strap since I never know what size bottle I'm gonna be available. Only bad thing is that the rubber strap can make it difficult to put some of the bigger bottles back in. I stopped buying bigger bottles. Amazingly enough the spread between the two bolt holes was exactly the same as the spread between the two bolts that hold the master cylinder on. Two longer bolts from ACE hardware (.70) and I had a cupholder. One thing though...if you carry a mug of hot tea make sure you close the lid when you take off. The mug/bottle will sit a bit crooked when you're cruisin' down the road and can spill on your knee. ~~~~~~~~ Bike do not handle better if the tires are close to the same size. If that were true then race bikes wouldn't have a 3.5 front and a 6" rear. By having a narrower tire the distance from the center to the side of the tire is less & the shape is also more triangular than stock. When you turn the bars it takes less effort and the tire doesn't have to lean as much to get the proper angle for the turn. Now, this was a very simplistic explanation but is still correct enough to give you the idea...I hope.

Need antenna help....not Marshall Mod
Monsta replied to Monsta's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Hmmm...interesting. I hate wasting time...and money! I can deal with spending the $15 for the booster but even that has a 50/50 shot based on the 6 reviews. That's good info you posted and I certainly understand it, however, my Excursion gets worse reception as my Avalanche. My Excursion has more metal since it is much larger and the Avalanche is mostly covered in plastic (not sure if that matters). My Mazda 5 gets the best and it is less than half the size of the Excursion and has an antenna that is about 7" long. Should I take into account the actual power from the radio as well? I don't understand this electronic signal stuff...I just wanna listen to talk radio. -
Can someone help with an electrical mod?
Monsta replied to Monsta's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I was originally looking for something that would just require me to put the key in the ACCES position when I stop. I usually do this anyway to keep the radio on anyway. I like au-to-ma-tic stuff. The portable strobe idea got me thinking that most of the time I stop I usually have the trunk open. You see, I have a self powered, removable LED light Velcro'd to the lid of the trunk (plus one in each saddlebag). Upon going out tonight in the dark I realized that the trunk light put a rather large swath of light around the back of the bike. It may just suffice for my needs for now. However, I think I'm going to wire one of the additional LED light bars I have to come on when I open the trunk or at least put a switch in side the trunk for them to come on. If I can find an appropriate sized plunger switch that would be even cooler! Au-to-ma-tic! I've decided not to do the additional switches on the master cylinder. Too much dough to spend now. I need cheap mods as my kids are still small(er). One new mod idea I had tonight was a small LED mounted on the plastic cover that goes around the ignition. It will be in that little "nook" pointing right at the key hole. This LED will always be hot and will light up the ignition key area for those nights when I ride. I feel like Ray Charles sometimes when I am trying to get the key in there! I figure the draw will be so minimal that I could probably not ride for a year and have no detrimental affect to the battery charge state. -
I would like to improve my AM reception if possible. There are places where I cannot get the AM stations that I can in my trucks. Improving FM reception is a welcome addition although I can get all the stations that my trucks can. The Marshall mod confuses me a bit as i don't get all the lingo and the bases and stuff... (Just what the hell is a PL259?? He references it but makes no mention of it in the parts list...) Anyway...I don't need a folding bases. I have a metal grommet in my cover that the antenna slips through. I was very proud of that mod and don't want it to be wasted by going with a fold down bases. My base doesn't fold down now anyway due to "oldness". So...what IS the best antenna to use and what base would I use? And is there anything else I can do to improve my AM reception. Stupid questions but...can I run TWO antennas for improved reception to the radio? I do not use the CB antenna and have actually taken it and the entire holder off. (We don't use CB's here or rather, when I tried nobody answered me.) Is it possible to split the AM & FM signals to different antennas without having some sort of Radio Engineering degree and a thousand bucks. Or even run two AM/FM antennas or is two not better in this situation?

Can someone help with an electrical mod?
Monsta replied to Monsta's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Cliff...they don't work unless the key is on RUN. Silly, huh? mandatory for cars/trucks to have hazards that flash without the key in the ignition, they should really make bikes have the same thing. Carbon_One - Okay as I read it you simply placed a relay in to activate the light. I can certainly do that! I'll look for one of those switch boxes. I've seen you guys with them and they look nice! Now maybe I can add a few more functional things that need to be switched like that. Thanks for the tip!! -
I'd like to have my tail light(s) come on when I put the key in the ACCES position. Sometimes at night I pull over for whatever reason and don't want to keep my headlights and everything else on but want to have some lighting on. Most of my other bikes had a "PARK" position where the taillight would be lit. How can I accomplish this without hacking up too many wires? I'm thinking that I would have to relay off the radio as it is the only thing (I think) that is powered up in the ACCES position. What I don't know is what negative affects this could have once the bike is running.

Ron, this certainly saved me some headaches! Sure beat going back and forth from the back of the bike to the battery. Ran all the wires and matched them up per the guide you posted.

Remote Air compressor?
Monsta replied to Bubbajbi's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Don't the previous Ventures have an electric air pump? Gold wings, too? Maybe a retrofit of one of those pumps since the rate has to be in the correct range. Then again. Unless the pump can pump up the shock to over 55PSI in less than a second I wouldn't worry too much about it. As long as an accurate gauge and a on-off rocker switch is installed I think it'd work. You just may not get an accurate fill with a faster pump.- 9 replies

Remote Air compressor?
Monsta replied to Bubbajbi's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Neat idea! I've though of doing something like that. You go first and tell me if it works! I'm still out there a bit with this train of thought that more air equals different dampening. Maybe because I cannot change it on the fly. My thinking is that the air is set preload and therefore static and loaded ride height. An air pump would be great if, say, I were riding single with an unloaded trailer and went to pick some stuff up in town. I bump up the PSI to compensate for the load I just picked up. Then while cruising home a gorgeous blond asks for a ride to her penthouse apartment to meet her other two friends for drinks and to help them try on different bikinis for their upcoming photo shoot. I could up the PSI to compensate for her 98lbs then once I get to her apartment her two girlfriends take me upstairs right after I let some air out of the shock with my remote release valve, so I go and they say to heck with the bikinis and they are all nekkid and stuff and boy can they dance and my aren't they flexible then.......... uhhhhhhhh........did I just type that out loud?? Not sure the rate of inflation for that pump. It may inflate the shock too fast.- 9 replies

Pull that shifter off and cut off the heel shifter part! The PO did that to my bike. Nice clean cut. OR...if you're not riding much in the next few weeks, I'll trade you. Just send me yours and I'll send (paypal) you a deposit, once I get it I'll send you mine and you refund the deposit less shipping.

Well if it started when you changed the oil.... What weight & brand? Did you check to make sure it isn't over/under filled?

Rear Brake Proportioning Valve- Butler Mod
Monsta replied to Freebird's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I had made the suggestion before but I'll make it again for those who may have not heard it. By adjusting the pedal DOWN you limit the ability to lock up the rear wheel. I adjusted mine down about an inch and a half (I think). I cannot lock my rear wheel unless I lift my foot completely off the floor board and stomp on it PLUS add extra force to the point where I can almost come off the seat. For everyday riding and panic situations it really helps minimize lock up. Plus, it's free.
