Tire change detail questions
Monsta replied to Venturing Sole's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Uh...no...not really. Glazing is caused by prolonged high speed dragging of the pad against the rotor. The pad material actually melts the surface of the pad(s). Some people's "love" is engines and extracting more power, others is appearance etc. etc. My "love" has always been suspension tuning and braking performance. Weird, I suppose. No sense in going fast if you can't control the bike or stop when you want. -
Tire change detail questions
Monsta replied to Venturing Sole's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'm sorry but I had to interject. DO NOT hold the brake pads against the hot rotor. This causes pad material transfer. Done too much (and especially when breaking in new pads) will create high spots of cementite. Cementite is basically super heated & melted pad material. It is these high spots of cementite that many people mistake for warped rotors. A sure fire way to get that "warped rotor feel" (since actually warping a rotor is very, very hard to do) is to hold a hot pad against a hot rotors. Try to make it a point not to hold the brake too long against the pad after prolonged use of the brakes such as going down steep hills with a stop sign at the bottom. I usually leave a bit of room to allow me to creep so that the pads don't stay in one spot on the rotor for too long Proper break in should start at, say, 30mph and progress up to 55 or 60. You do a firm stop all the way down to about 5mph and the motor off allowing everything to cool for a few minutes and then repeating and adding more braking force as you go. Often you only need about 5 good "stops" to seat or break-in pads and rotor. An excellent read. Even though it is about cars, we share the same braking system. Where does the "box" go that controls (I assume) the radio that is usually mounted under the rack that supports the trunk? I wouldn't mind being able to remove the trunk with a quick release kinda system but keep the rack on it. I am unsure of what actually goes through that box (mentioned above) that would have to have a disconnect added to it. That bike is quite a beauty without the top box but I use mine so much I'm sure I'd miss it after a few days. Hence, my desire for the quick disconnect.

To remove tank emblems. Pull. Clean up leftover adhesive. To help minimize rear brake lock up. Lower your brake pedal to reduce the "angle of attack" and reduce leverage on it. Quite easy. ````````````` bubbajbi, can the trunk assembly go back easily? It appears that you removed everything back there. Radio, too??

Thank God for safety gear and the sense to use it! Glad you're in one piece. How fast do you think you were going that you would be able to go over the windshield on your bike?
-
I'd like to have the engine power, the alternator power, the headlight brightness, the rear light visibility & the aftermarket following of the Gold Wing. Honda can keep everything else.

And FWIW, those who have a Corbin backrest don't have to worry about this. The "armrests" on the backrest will rest right on the passenger grab bars. I removed my trunk arm because of this and the fact that I hated to do the "lift up to release" thing. Plus, everyone who ever used the trunk didn't know about it and would inevitably push it down (or try) when it was in the locked, up position. Cheap design (IMO). Shoulda been a small, pressurized lift strut there instead.

Noise while on jack
Monsta replied to Eddie Fulmer's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
What kind of noise though?? -
Maybe unrestricted and wearing different body work. I think it would be drag limited to be able to hit 230 even IF the electronics allowed it. Most manufacturers are staying within the 186 MAX MPH limit.

hugbare, thanks for the link! Leland, thanks for the post. I was looking at the same itinerary. A balcony is a must! Don't think I could stay that long on a boat without fresh air and the ability to go outside when I wanted. The whales that go to Alaska come here in the winter to mate and calve. We sit on our front lanai (porch) and watch them breach. What a site!

Righty-O! I'll fire up the digital camera while I remove & replace. I plan on putting grease n every electrical connection while I'm back there too. An article on cassette player removal should be fairly easy to do since I'm back there. One mod I'd like to do is to put the headlight and passing lamps (if they aren't already) on their own separate relays. Anyone got the specs on the preferred relay?

I have some fairly large cracks in my fairing up by the edges of the windshield. I think it is from the previous owner as I didn't make them. Anyway I got a replacement via ebay and will be replacing it in the next couple of days. If there isn't a tech article about it here should I take pics and documents steps? Is there anything in that area of the bike that someone would want pictures of?

I ran over a broken razor blade. It sliced my rear tire on the side wall and I lost all air in about 2 seconds. I was only going about 30 mph driving down "Main" street in my town. Hardest parts was coming to a stop on the side of the road. 30mph was okay, 3 mph sucked. My youngest daughter was on the back, too. That reminds me, I've really got to get some "Ride-On" tire sealant...not that it would have helped in that particular situation.

I can only take about 10 days of winter a year. I have no real desire to cruise somewhere tropical as it would not be real different from where I live. I want to go in early to mid May. It's closer to our actual anniversary and will give me that brisk air feeling I miss sometimes. I'll check out Norwegian Cruise Line. I looked at Princess last night. Thanks for some of the inside advice. I, personally, would prefer to fly in, rent a motorcycle and take one of the week long tours but the wife likes the amenities. Next year is our 16th, I was suppose to do this for our 15th. Bottom line, she gets what she wants this time....this time?! ...Heck...ALL the time! The 20th is already planned that we take 14-day, cross-country motorcycle trip.

Lift adapter sketch???
Monsta replied to odysse68's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Cool. I've not seen those pics. I bought one of CarbonOne's used. I like the idea of putting some rubber on the contact points.- 10 replies

Question about Canadian RSVs

Thanks! I kinda wanted to see what it looked like when it's on, too. -
Question about Canadian RSVs
Monsta replied to Monsta's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Is the KMH on the LED part where the "needle" is like the US model or is it printed above like a US MPH display? Anyone got a picture of the Canadian or non-US model's speedo? -
To my eye it would look better turned around. The angles would follow better and the swept back part (the back) would aid (maybe) in aerodynamics. Just me though. I like the ingenuity, fo shure!!

Need intercom plug replacement info
Monsta replied to Monsta's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Kris, where'd you get your bug? Thank you for that offer! I'll try Goose's suggestion first just to save you from removing and shipping it. If it doesn't work I'll shoot you an email! THANKS! I am still strongly considering a couple of Bluetooth headsets. I'm tired of missing out on phone calls when I'm riding since I use my bike for work.- 3 replies
