Installing a radiator cover, HELP
farm1810 replied to jarrejx's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I just received a Wagner grill. It attaches with cable ties. Does anyone have some miles on this install and can you tell me if you are still satisfied with it now that you have written for a while? -
front turn signals on the rear
farm1810 replied to dacheedah's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
If I choose to do this, can I pull the wire out enough by loosening the light fixture clamp, then pull through some extra wire. Then, attach the two wires from the front fixtures to the one orginal rear using the one to pull through / in the two new wires? Or, do I need to remove the rear tire to get enough access to feed the two wires? I assume the junction of the rear turn signals, brake light, parking lights is behind the license plate? Is that right? -
Doss Teardrop Spotlights
farm1810 replied to farm1810's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I believe the spots are 4" not 4.5", but I will measure when I get home tonight. The turn signal / parking light is LED. So I have the more rapid flashing going on, I have the standard rear turn signal bulb. I understand how to fix that if I choose to do so. There is an additional wire coming from the led and the wiring diagram shows this as a "maker light", then with a different wire as the "turn signal". I connected this marker light wire to my parking light wire on the bike, nothing. If I hook the turn signal wire to the bikes parking light wire, then both LED's light up very bright. I purchased a three fuse panel with a relay, connected the relay to a switched wire and put a small toggle in the gas tank cowl so that the relay is activated with the key switch, and I can toggle the spots off if I choose to do that. My plan is to run with them all of the time. I will post a photo. I started out with these with the spotlight up, which I think is the intention of the designer. This put them a little high and using the RSTD light bar, also placed the a bit in front of the headlight. It looked a little goofy. So, I turned them upside down so they look like a raindrop shop with the LED on top. I like this a lot better. Then, I got a piece of black lexan and cut a set of lower wind deflectors out of that, sanding the edges, etc. so that there is that as a black back drop to these lowered lights. The black also blends in nicely with the black lower fairings on my bike (Blue / Black paint combo 2008). My wife just ordered me the black radiator grill cover for my birthday. So I am hoping that finishes off the front end look that I am seeking. -
HD Licence plate light bar, Installed
farm1810 replied to jrsain's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
It looks great! Not to mention the safety aspects. Thanks for sharing. -
E Bay had a set of Venture tour pack brackets / support frames so I just purchased these. I have purchased an aftermarket, Harley style tour pack to do on it. Has anyone done this combination and what about height for the back cushion? My wife is about 5'5" and I would like to get the trunk painted to match and get it all installed by Christmas as a surprise. Any insight from experienced folks would be appreciated. Thanks.

Does this all mount to the two license plate mounting bolts? -
Gas Miliage
farm1810 replied to johnbroughman's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I am interested in this answer. My RSTD gets about 32 mpg no matter how I ride it i.e. around town, on the highway, rev it up more, lug it around... Also, the prior owner said he always ran the highest octane gas that he could buy. I read that 86 was fine, on this website after I had refilled for the first time with 92. The bike always popped a bit out the exhaust on decelleration. Nothing bad, just noticable. On 86, it does not do this as much I don't believe. Kind of interesting. -
Has anyone removed the stock rear turn signals / brackets? How bad are the holes left behind in the fender? Are there three holes?

I purchased a set of the Doss Teardrop spotlights with built in amber parking light / turn signal. The parking light / turn signal is LED. The turn signal works fine, although it flashes a bit fast, but with my stock rear turn signals all is still fine. That said, the parking light does not work when wired to my stock parking light wiring. Does anyone have experience with these? I am sure my stock parking light wiring has power both through my test light and it will light the LED when wired through the LED turn signal feed. Help?

Guys, I have owned my RSTD for just under a month. I owned and rode lots of enduro bikes as a young man, have had Kawasaki, Yamaha, and H-D road bikes. At 55 years old, I thought that I knew how to ride albeit it has been a few years since I owned my last. I wrote to you about the whine in the bike, at which MPH and in which gear. There was a boat load of advice about allowing the engine to wind out a bit. One poster responded that he never uses 5th gear until 75 mph. I should have just listened. Yesterday my wife and I took about a 4 hour ride. I just gave way to trust in your advice. I ran along in 3rd gear up until just over 40mph. I used 4th the rest of the time except when we traveled on the 4 lane turnpike at 65 - 75 mph and then used 5th. It was one of the most comfortable and good feeling rides I have ever taken on a bike. That little engine just seems to cook right along just as happy as can be at those rpm's & wheel speed. Thanks for the advice. OH, and by letting it rev a little more in each gear, almost no whining whatsoever. Thanks for the great advice. R.

My RSTD has an odor of gasoline almost all of the time. I do not see any leaks at all. It runs perfect. Is there a vent tube or something I should check? When moving it isn't noticable at all, but at traffic lights stopped or even sitting in my garage with the fuel cock closed, it is still a pretty strong gas odor. Ideas?

I have looked at the threads about wiring in spot lights / running lights. I will be using a relay, mounting it under the seat, fused, etc. I am thinking that the blue wire for the taillight should be in a harnass running under the seat. Would it be sufficient to power my relay from wire running to the taillight so the spot lights are only on when the key is turned on? I am also going to wire in a manual switch up front. Will this wire / circuit handle the load of the relay? Thanks. R.

Harley Davidson Taillight

Does anyone make something more attractive to replace the original rear turn signals without leaving open holes in the fender from the brackets? -
Harley Davidson Taillight
farm1810 posted a topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
There are a large number of very attractive Harley Davidson after market taillights / turn signals on the market. Is the contour of the RSTD rear fender adequate for adapting one of these sets? Does anyone have photos? -
This has been the most informative thread about tires, sizes, wear, suspension - just practical stuff that every rider should consider and be aware of. Thank you very much all.

Ah, the 5th gear whining
farm1810 replied to farm1810's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
So today I put myself in the mindset that I had a bike with a 4 speed transmission and an overdrive, not a 5 speed. May sound silly, but I grew up in the days when cars had 3 speeds with overdrive, so this made mental sense to me. Even at 60 mph it was quite comfortable and the engine was happy just as all of you said. Thank you. As far as my noise, I believe it is coming from the differential. The bike still makes the noise at about starting at about 45 mph and continuing up to 60 even in 4th gear. It whines away while under accelleration, but goes silent when the throttle is in a more neutral position or when decellerating. Good news is, the warrantee is good until July 2014!! Woohoo! -
My story is a bit more conservative. I followed the advice you guys gave me. Inflated the front tire from 34 psi to 38 psi. Rear tire from 36 psi to 40 psi. Left the front forks with 0 psi, then inflated the rear suspension from 0 to 25 psi. Totally different motorcycle both in the parking lot and at speed. The little bit of additional stiffness in the rear makes it feel much more glued to the ground in turns, in my opinion. I'm guessing the tire pressure was the low speed wiggle problem. Thanks so much, this thing is solid as a rock for me now.

Ah, the 5th gear whining
farm1810 replied to farm1810's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I clunk it over into 5th when I am on a flat surface, for a longer distance. But this is a 2 lane road with shoulders and 50 mph speed limit. If I am only to use 5th when running 70 - 75 mph, I am basically left with a 4 speed bike as the speed limit on the interstate in my area is 65 mph. The engine sounds fine from an rpm standpoint and is not lugging along at all. I do downshift into 4th with a grade. The other thing is; the whining is only under power. If I roll back to a neutral position on throttle or decellarate, the whining goes completely away. Almost more like a care with a noisy differential / bad pinion bearing. -
My 2008 RSTD has about 18K miles and has a whine mosting in 5th gear and most pronounced below 50 mph. I have been around early Willys Jeeps for most of my life and the noise happily reminds me of an early Jeep transfer case, particularly with an aftermarket overdrive is added. Mine really isn't all that loud, even with the stock mufflers. My question is; should I be concerned at all i.e. asking the dealer about changing the clutch basket or is this just a characteristic of the motorcycle and I should love it for what it is just like I love my old Jeeps? I am hoping it is the latter. R.

So I love my new bike (well new to me - 2008 RSTD) however I have the low speed heavy handling issue described here. It isn't real bad, but it does tend to want to dive to the inside on low speed turns and it is a little tough to keep straight coming up to a stop light without some wiggle room. I have checked the tire pressure, but have not checked the air in the suspension on either end. I have read that 0 PSI front and 25 PSI rear seems to be a common suggestion (along with 40PSI Front & 42 PSI Rear for tire pressure with Dunlops). I have read about changing the level links as a solution along with possibly changing the front tire to something a little narrower. Could someone explain what is going on here with the suspension and tire footprint? I get the tire pressure concept, but I don't understand how the suspension works i.e. air over shock, the level link change, and the narrow tire. Thanks very much.

RSTD Spotlight Help
farm1810 replied to farm1810's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Thanks. Yes, I am thinking that I will have them on all of the time for greater visibility i.e. others seeing me. Are there any extra locations in the fuse panel that I could use or are you proposing a fusible link? Also, where would I get the appropriate relay? Also, is there an easy way to disconnect the headlight from the ignition switch so I have the passing lights in all of the time and switch on the headlight as needed at night? Thanks. R. -
I have a 2008 RSTD and want to add spotlights. I purchased as set that were original equipment to early 2000's Indian, which has the turn signal built into the bottom of the spotlight housing. They mount fine on the RSTD spotlight bar. Does anyone have a diagram of how these get wired into the right circuit? I have seen where RSTD owners have added a toggle switch for on / off. Where do folks mount that toggle switch? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. R.
