  1. No intent to get anybody stirred up it was out of curiosity that I asked. My last bike was a VTX 1800C (a real stump puller) there weren't many that challenged me unlike when I rode a Shadow. I don't say that meaning I was out looking for races, in fact never raced it. I think most people on two wheels knew what is was and how they ran. I'm told in the sport cruiser venue there were many bikes that would rival it, tests showed them running the quarter mile in the 12:40's. That was why when I started looking for a touring bike it was tough, I started by test driving a 1600 Kaw Nomad. Loved the look and the ride but what a pooch compared to the VTX. I was told the only thing close to my VTX would be the Royal Star and I settled on the RSTD and love it. So that is why I asked "what was all the talk about the 1st gen being faster". BTW in the VTX crowd all the owners of black bikes state that "Black is Fastest"

  2. I have read many threads that have comments that state their 1st. gen is faster. I thought it was just banter between the two generations, until today, when I read from a fired up member that owns a HD and a first generation. He was tired of a post that he thought was a HD bashing and after he bragged up his HD he closed with a statement that his 1st. gen. would blow the doors off of any 2nd. gen.!!!!! So, are the 1st. generation bikes faster? If so why?

  3. Every brand of bike has it's recognized (and discussed to death) faults.

    For example, my RSTD ....

    no, it's actually perfect. :mustache:

OK, I have a question, beyond the clutch basket whine/chirp what faults does the RSTD have? I'm a new owner of an 07 RSTD and have the noisy clutch basket whine but not crazy loud. The only other problem I have is the fuel tank must leak and the leaking has some correlation to the odometer continuing to record a larger number.:mustache:

  4. Saturday evening after Church the wife and I ride to down town Ft Myers. The city does a great job of Art Walk, Music Walk and Bike Nights that welcome bikes. So I'm backing the 07 RSTD against the curb and I realize my wife is talking to someone. He then asked me if we were leaving (so he hadn't been there that long) and I said we just got there. He then starts telling me he has one like ours but it was light tan in color so I ask if it was a Venture since I wasn't familiar of that color in a RSTD. He replied with a "what?" So I say you have a Yamaha and he said no he had a Harley like mine. Then I tell him that my bike is a Yamaha and he says oh and wanders off I think somewhat embarrassed.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is the HD boys are a confused bunch!!!!

  5. Before you purchase it, have the dealer see if the clutch basket has already been replaced with the "I" basket. If not, Yamaha will do it one time under warranty. Not sure if you were already aware of that.

I like what you have said yet I hear that many owners have a lot of difficulty getting their dealer to do it. They report that their dealer states the noise is normal. I have a 07 RSTD, the noise is there yet not crazy loud although it could bug me if I concentrate on it. I still have 14 months of factory warranty, should I wait until near the end of it or approach them now? Is there some factory recall or memo that I can use when I take it in?

  6. I'm driving in the center lane of three, I look in my left mirror and see a car what seemed to be plenty of room behind me to change lanes. I believe I turned my signal on and started moving to the left when I hear a clicking sound coming from the left side of my bike. Now as I look to the left I see the car that was in my rear view mirror right beside me with my newly installed highway peg doing the chariot thing on her front wheel. Thank the LORD that HE gave me the ability to remain calm and move slowly to the right away from the car that I was sharing the lane with. She slowed down, I moved ahead of her and we made a left hand turn off the road to talk. She the driver of the car asked if I was OK (I don't know yet how I was not shaken) I said yes as I looked at my peg and realized it was somewhat OK. We then looked at her car with a few scratches in the clear coat of her wheel and missing center cap. She's saying lets just exchange info and is gesturing that I pay for her loss. So, I reply lets call the police so the blame can be appropriately charged. She replied "Are we really going to do this" and I said do what? She said she had a good relationship with her dealer and she would be reasonable and did we really want to involve the law and spend a few hours doing it. I said OK and it probably was a wise decision once I was away from the scene but, I still am wondering why she was so adamant about no police. As I reflect I was at fault because I was the one changing lanes, I almost always look over my shoulder along with looking in the mirror and this is the reason why. Again thank GOD it could have been worse.

  7. I'm not an owner of a first gen. but I'm surprised not to find much highers numbers. I know when I was looking to buy a RSTD in July I saw many second gen. with 50-80k on them. With that being said I expected to see many 100-200k numbers for second gen. I live in Florida and am not an Iron butt rider, a 50-75 mile ride (one way) is a long ride for me and the wife. We do have the ability to ride year round and we ride around 7-10k a year. So if you take a 1983 bike at 5k a year which is I think a low average it should have 140k on it. (28years x 5,000 miles = 140,000 miles)

    Enough said and God Bless,

    Jerry

  8. The question is to anyone that has installed the HD licence plate light bar on their bike. What has anyone done to finish off the 90 degree bend at the top of the bracket with the two holes in it. I believe the two holes were used to bolt it to a tour pack or frame work that the tour pack is attached to. With the RSTD the bend is very visible since we do not have a rear trunk, it's not that it is terribly distasteful, it just looks like something is missing.

  9. Ok here are the two RSTD prototypes.

    1) The Star Logo

    2) The M/C Logo

I will hear soon about the reflective thread.

Does any one have any suggestions for improvements.

I will contact Freebird if there is a way to send out a PM to all those who rides RSTD and RSTC.

Not sure where this is at the time, are they available, what sizes and cost?

  10. I went last year and never again. 20 mins to get form the Interstate to J&P and that was a quick ride.

Was that during Bike Week or Biketoberfest? There is a big difference I believe, being that Biketoberfest is far less congested. As far as the 20 min ride, that sounds like Main St. We Don't go for the party, it's just fun to be around so many bikes and to ride in that area with the large amount of water front restaurants. The biggest thing about all the bikes is if you can imagine it, you will see it. BTW during Biketoberfest last year we went to J&P twice and drove directly there with exceptions of traffic signals.

  11. We have done Bike Week in 05, Biketoberfest in 2010 and are thinking about going again this October. In the past we have tried to connect with other VTX owners, which is what we were ridding then. We now have a 07 RSTS and would like to meet others with like bikes for swapping ideas, maintenance procedures and mod's. It was always difficult to get very many VTX's together at one time. I'm not sure why it was so difficult, I think many riders ride with their friends regardless of what they ride rather than a group of like brand bikes. Anyhow as time goes on and there is interest of getting together lets share cell numbers and where we all will be staying.

Below is the evolution of what I have ridden since moving to Florida, 01 Shadow, 03 VTX 1800, back surgery, hip replacement, 06 Yamaha Majesty scooter, 04 HD 1200 Trike (I built and hated it), 03 VTX 1800 and now the 07 RSTD.

Funny how our minds work, my wife got going on this thinking it would be a nice treat for me. Yesterday I asked her "so you are excited about going back to Daytona?" She answered me with "I thought it would be something you would really like to do". I told her I was thinking of some place new for a fall trip. Now we are thinking of going to the Upper Keys or Tarpon Springs area.

Sorry if this was misleading to anyone.

  12. I have basically asked the same question a week ago without any real affirmation of a reason why. I used them on two VTX's I have owned and the best thing I can say is you never have to buy a filter again and the reports of being able to run them 20-50k without cleaning and recharging them, of course that is on the pavement only driving. Again on the VTX the intake seemed more throaty.

On price I have been watching them on ebay from $65-$99.

I was looking for some real fuel mileage/performance testimonies

  13. Nope, they work fine gentlemen. I have the same exact bike (same color too) and they will and do fit. I put them in when I put the after market pipes on my bike. Then I plugged the AIS system, stopped the backfire.

Jrsain, how many miles on your RSTD ? Did you buy it new ?

Actualy I have owned it just three weeks today it's a 07 with 20,125 miles. It still has 15 months of factory warranty and we love it.

  14. Just Put the tour pack on with the wrap around seat. Looking for a fairing next just need to find the right one.

What rear trunk did you use? It looks like it is setting on the luggage rack and is mounted to the backrest. Is this set up for your application or did you have to do some custom work?

Here are photos of our 07 RSTD.

  15. Is it normal for the chrome to go south on these tips? When I was in the bike buying process I looked at two different bikes with less than 10k on them, one had bought spares already to replace the ones on his bike and the second bike had flaky chrome tips. I bought a bike with 20k and the tips looked great until I went to turn the tips the other day and realized the bottom side had flaky chrome. So as I asked is this normal or is there some way to protect them. I was thinking of taking them off and sanding the chrome off and painting them with heat resistant crinkle black paint. I have also found new on ebay for $69. Talk to me boys and girls.
