  1. Here in south Florida they are a must and work great for me at 6'2". I ride with my feet on the floor boards, then just my heels on the boards and the ball of my feet on the high way pegs and then completly on the pegs. The wings work great as well to keep the heat on your legs and feet when it is cool.

  2. 2007 RSTD w/23k miles and factory warranty until October.

Yes; a squeak at idle and fading away with engine rpm, or at least I don't hear it. I just changed oil a few miles before it manifested itself most of the time at an idle. I could occasionally hear it prior to the oil change but very minor in volume, yet now much louder and most of the time. I took it to the dealer and he couldn't identify it yet was willing to tear into it but was cautious about doing that without a clear idea what they were looking for. He asked about oil change and I replied it was just done within a few hundred miles and it was 10-40 Kendal 4 stroke Motorcycle oil. He suggested that I change it to 20-50 since we live in south Florida and it should perform well with it, we could see if the change has any effect on the noise.

I read a thread that sounded similar to my noise with the best comment being a possible water pump bearing but 90% of the replies were rhetoric about the OP have hearing issues, so please just good positive comments.

    Thanks

  3. Hey, I woke up this morning to a cold 55 degrees and it warmed up to 82 here in SW Florida. Please don't bring any of that cold weather down our way. I presume those of you not going on cruises and staying longer than a week are bringing your bikes to enjoy the weather.

  4. In August I purchased this 07 RSTD, it had 20k on it and I got the 150 front tire and stock windshield. I paid $7100 and probably would have gotten it for less if I had bought it out right and not have traded a bike in on it. I don't know if this helps, I posted this for comparison. BTW is has factory warranty intil November of this year.

  5. I found this and I copied the most important pieces (or so I think) from a travel article, there is so much to do, so do your homework.

Traveling to the Keys, you’ll leave Homestead and Florida City down an 18-mile stretch of US 1 through the Everglades, in most places it’s simply a two-lane highway, be patient, as there are passing zones that widen to four lanes every couple of miles. The ride is quiet and serene, which puts you in the vacation state of mind.

The first Key you’ll get to is Key Largo. Some of the best diving in the Keys is found at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the beginning of the only living coral reef in the US. Diving, snorkeling and glass-bottom boats give spectacular views of undersea life.

The next Key is Islamorada. Islamorada is known as the Sport Fishing Capital of the World. If you’re not a fisherman, see a show or swim with dolphins, stingrays and sea lions at Theater of the Sea.

Marathon, known as the Heart of the Keys, is a small town in the middle of otherwise tourist-y islands. The seven-mile bridge, which has been the site of several movies including True Lies, is a gorgeous ride over the water. On one side is the Atlantic Ocean; on the other, the Bay. When the sky is clear and blue, it’s an unbeatable landscape of colors.

After Marathon comes a chain of small islands known collectively as the Lower Keys. They include, among others, the unparalleled diving at Looe Key reef and the pet-friendly beaches of Little Duck Key. Homey restaurants make the Lower Keys a perfect place to stop for dinner.

Key West, the southernmost Key, is unlike the rest of the Keys. The marker at the southernmost point in the US is 90 miles from Cuba, and on a clear day you can make out the shape of Cuba on the horizon. Hemmingway found Key West an inspirational place to work, and it has continued to draw artists and authors from around the world. The nightlife can be a bit wild, but it’s all part of the charm. Don’t miss the sunset at Mallory Square; the nightly Sunset Celebration is inspiring.

  6. Not a VTX 1300, but a VTX 1800C to now a Royal Star Tour Deluxe not a Royal Star Venture. The reason for the change was the same as your desires "more comfort". We have just owned it since the second week of August, but a comparison is on the VTX I could feel her squirming around on her seat after 30-40 min. and one of our first rides we were on the bike for 1-1/2 hours before we got off for gas with no complaints. I'm 6'-2" as well and have added the highway pegs for additional leg room. The RSTD has quick release windshield and sissy bar/backrest they advertise for boulevard cruising, but I like it for cleaning. BTW our bike is an 07.

  7. This is what I did @ 6'-2", I find most of the time my heels are on the front portion of the floorboards and the ball of my feet are on the highway pegs. QUOTE]

Yep, that's where my feet end up as well, and an identical highway peg set up. Very comfortable position and I'm 6'6'. :thumbsup2:

You just wanted to tell everyone that you were taller than me. LOL Anyhow I have many friends that are envious of my height, which I don't think I'm all that tall. There are many times I wish I was a little shorter like in some sports cars. I had a friend that was 6'-8" and 320 lbs he played ball for the JETS, my brother @ 6'-4" and me @ 6'-2" were the little guys when we were with him.

  8. I do not know the mileage of your bike. But just in case you did not know. There is a recall of this model. The head bolts where not properly torqued on some and there could be an oil leak. Mine started at around 4,000 - 5,000 mile. That is how I knew. The dealer whom sold the bike new should have checked this before the bike left the shop. They did not on mine and then the head gasket had to be replaced. If it is checked and done early then you will not have this problem. I found out the hard way, as usual.

I love mine, although I am going to do the Flanders handle bar upgrade ASAP. Other than that and new Avon Tires, I will be ready for next spring. Thanks for asking the question, I have wondered that also.

    Fuzzy

I bought it the second week of August with 20,125 miles on it. It was sold on consignment by a dealer that he had all of his non-warranty service work done. I was told that he was a fanatic on his bikes, yes they said this was one of five bikes he owned. Anyhow I plan to take this in for service soon and will ask about all warranty work preformed. I know I asked about recalls when they did the warranty transfer inspection; they said there wasn't any. NO OIL LEAKS!!!!!!

  9. I have the Motorola X which I think has the largest screen 4.3" dia. This is the main reason for me choosing it and on sale at Costco with Verizon as the carrier. I have my music, GPS and hands free phone that will ring in on top of any other function thru the speakers. I had another biker that was two car lengths behind me when my wife called then at the next light they had moved up beside me as asked if that was my phone that that they heard? BTW I use a 100w Shark amp.

  10. So basically it's March 12-15,19-22 or 26-29th on the chain of islands.

For us the dates 12th-15th and 19th-22nd are the ones that work for us. My wife (Nancy) is a school principal and they have Stanford Testing the following week and needs to be at school during that time. The 12th-15th is the best due to it being her schools spring break. All this being said you need to adjust the dates to fit the group since we live so close and may well have just been there in late Feburary 2012. The attaached photo is sunset shot from Mallory Square, Key West.

  11. Whats a trailer??

We would trailer over to the Key Largo area and spend the night, then take off the next morning on the bike for the remainder of the trip if the timing was correct for the group. Two hours on alligator Alley is not our kind of fun. Yes you can call me a sissy, I'm a big boy. Most hotels will allow you to leave your tow vehicle and trailer there since you will be staying with them a night or two. We have done this on four different occasions from two to four days and have stayed in one place from Islamorada to Big Pine Key and then riding daily from there.

  12. Called another. No answer no call back.

Call your local concrete plant, in brief explain your story and needs, then ask for a reference of someone that will show up. I know we would get a lot of references from the concrete plant, when a customer would call they would say "they speak highly of you at McCoy Concrete".

The big issue of getting someone to come in and take off from the mess the first guy made is when it is done and you are asked by someone "who did your work" his name now gets put in the mess.

Now you have heard my 2 cents.

  13. So is this turning out to be a Boys outing or are couples included? As we get closer we might want to add our names to a list with contact information along with names of spouses or significant other that will be riding along.

  14. If somebody has already made this observation I'm sorry for the reiteration. I believe that somebody that is taking off on a 2-5k trip they will have better tire wear than someone doing the same mileage over several months with trips of 100 miles or less. Although you may not hear your tire breaking traction when you take off there is the traction issue versus just driving down the road at 60 mph. Stops and Starts = tire wear!!

I think another factor in the deep south is our temp and here in Florida they use aggregate that has a lot of sea shells in it as well which is very abrasive.

  15. Well, I was able to get a new tire put on the rear of the bike so looks like I will be leaving on Wednesday morning (7:30am) headed to Key West Florida. Here is where I plan to be and what days I will be ther in case anyone wants to get together for a meal, a ride or both. My Cell number is in my Profile if you want to call me.

Saturday and Sunday Night Fort Meyers, Fl

Looking forward to a nice ride:clap2:

I live in Cape Coral just across the river from Ft Myers. Will you just be visiting or will you be riding around the Ft Myers area?
