Has anyone ever mounted a Mr. Gasket 42S fuel pump on a 1st Gen. If so, where and how did you mount it. My stock fuel pump has gone out and I already have a 42S that I used when I was trying to get my '83 running. I would like to use it if possible but I haven't found a good place to mount it. It's a little too big to fit in the location of the stock pump.

Be sure to make a trip to Maggie Valley and visit the Wheels Through Time Motorcycle Museum. It's well worth your time.

You are very observant. Before my trip I wrote that I wouldn't be able to ride my '83 because it wasn't ready for a long trip. I guess I should have left the motorcycle out of the pictures.

I got home from my trip to East Tennessee on Saturday afternoon. This trip was one of the most enjoyable things I’ve done in a long time. The weather was great and the trip went off without a hitch. As I said before leaving, it would have been better if I’d had someone to share this trip with, but this time I had to go it alone. I was able to ride many good motorcycle roads that up to this time, I had only traveled in my car. One of the most impressive parts of my trip was my visit to the Wheels Through Time Motorcycle Museum in Maggie Valley, NC. Anyone planning a trip to this area needs to take the time to go to Maggie Valley. The museum is a “Must See”. For only $12.00 you will have the opportunity to enjoy a piece of true motorcycle history. Well, I guess it’s time to start planning my next trip. Maybe next time I can find a few people to go with me.

Today as soon as I get off work, I'll be leaving on a trip to East Tennessee. My plan is to leave my home in Mansfield, Tn. at about 5:00 pm and ride to Cookville, where I'll spend the night. Then I'll get up early Thursday morning and continue up I-40 and exit at Kingston. I'll take Hwy. 304 to Hwy. 68 then I'll hit the Cherohala Skyway over to US-129 (the Dragon). From there I'll take the Foothills Pky. to Wears Valley Rd. to Pigeon Forge. It should be a good days ride. Then Friday I may ride over to the Wheels Thrrough Time Motorcycle Museum in Maggie Valley, NC. I'll be riding back home Saturday. I won't be able to ride my Venture because it really isn't quite ready for a long road trip yet, so I'll be riding my 1100 V-Star. The only thing that would make this trip better is if I had someone to ride with. My wife really isn't into riding yet and all my friends with bikes couldn't get off work. So I'll be going it alone. Hoping for a good safe trip.

JB Weld-sight glass window
lwinders replied to friesman's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I did the exact thing you are talking about doing. I took a round piece of sheet metal and used JB Weld to hole it in place. I tried to do it without draining first. I thought I had it good and clean but the JB Weld did not hold. So if you try it, be sure to you don't let any fluid get on it until it sets up very well. -
I went to a flat track race about 3 years ago in Paducah, Ky. There was a man there racing that was missing one of his arms. It was amazing to watch him ride. Anyone that has watched flat tracking knows the strength it would take to control these bikes in the curves.

Out of gas?
lwinders replied to lwinders's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I don't recall hearing a sucking sound when I removed the gas cap but I will check to make sure I don't have the vent hose cripmed somewhere.- 6 replies

Out of gas?
lwinders replied to lwinders's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I really didn't pay any attention to the tach. It has a new fuel filter on it. After it died, as soon as I pulled off on the side of the road, I tried to start it and it tried to hit a couple of times but wouldn't start. It really sounded like a fuel problem and not an ignition problem but I could be wrong. However, the fuel pump going out could be a possibility. Would it be at all possible that I could have gotten some trash or even a fleck of rust over the fuel pick-up and when I added gas could it have sloshed around enough to dislodge the trash?- 6 replies

Yesterday after mowing my yard, I thought I'd take a short ride and cool off. I hadn't had a chance to ride my '83 VR in a few days so I dicided to take it instead of my 1100. After about 20 miles, I was getting ready to head home. I was going to stop and fill up with gas before I went home. I showed 84 miles on that tank of gas and my fuel gauge showed 2 bars. About a mile from the store I was going to stop at to full up, I notice the bike slowing down. I gave it some throtle and nothing happened. I pulled off the side of the road. I tried to start it again but no luck. I checked to make sure I hadn't hit the kill switch and it was on. Everything electrical seemed to be working and it turned over fine. The only thing I could think of was that it was out of gas. I called a friend and he brought me a gallon of gas. After pouring it in, I cranked on it for a couple of minutes and it started. When I stopped to put gas in, it only held 1.9 gals. So I know it hadn't run out of gas. I rode the rest of the way home, about 10 miles and everything seemed fine. I really don't know what happened. I don't think it was an electrical problem because as I was trying to start it, it sounded like it would after running out of gas. It would try to hit severl times until it finally picked up the fuel and started. Is it possible that I had some trash in the tank that plugged the fuel pick-up?

I'll try increasing my tire pressure and see what happens. Venturous asked how good my tire pressure gage is. That's a good questions. I'll try a couple of different gages and see it they read the same.

I just finished reading the responses to my post. Now I will try to answer some of the questions. First of all I'm just put a new set of Shinko tires on. They now have about 300 miles on them. I'm running 40 psi in both front and rear. I have not added an aftermarket fork brace. Several have mentioned that brakes could be causing problems. My brakes do seem to me dragging a bit at times. The rear brake rotor seems to be a little hot but not so hot that I can smell it burning. Also the right front rotor is hotter than the left but not as hot as the rear. Someone said I may be lugging the engine a little. This may be true. I do tend to run in a little higher gear when crusing down the road. Usually in 5th gear at 55 - 60 mph. I'm so used to riding my 1100 that I'm having trouble making myself run in lower gears to keep my rpms up. And to Monty, I will be contacting you so we can set a time a time to get together.

I haven't had a chance to be online all weekend and am just now finding time to check my computer. I have had many many responses to my post. Thank you so muck. I am reading through them now. As soon as I read them I will respond to them. It's great to know there are so many willing to assist me.

Mike, Like is said in my post, it's really hard to pinpoint exactly what I'm not comfortable with. I know that doesn't make sense. I know I have small issues with my brakes that I'm still working on. And sometimes when I'm at about 70 mph or more, it doesn't feel real stable. This doesn't happen all the time though. Also, even though the engine seems to run very smooth, it always feels like its holding back. I really don't think I have any serious problems because it runs too well. Maybe I just need to ride it more and just build conficence in it. But it really would make me feel better if I knew how it compared to other 1st gens.

You're a long way off Steve. Maybe some of our members will be coming here on vacation. We have some really good fishing here.

I've started searching but haven't finished yet.

I've put a few hundred miles on my '83 VR but I'm really haven't built my trust in the bike yet. It sat for several years before I got it and I don't know anything about its history. I spent almost a year working on it in my spare time just to get it running. It's very easy to start. It idles fairly smooth and runs really smooth. But something just doesn't seem exactly right when riding it. I really can't put my finger on what isn't right, but it just feels a little off. What I'm looking for is someone with a 1st Gen., preferably and '83 model that lives near Henry County Tennesse. I would like someone to ride my motorcycle and tell if it is running like a 1st Gen is suposed to. I really enjoy riding it but until I can build trust in it, I'm afraid to wander too far from home. Do we have any 1st gen members that live near here?
-
I've been trying to watch for the owner but haven't seen them yet. If I see him or her, I will introduce myself and find out if he knows about this site. I'm not on my bike. My wife really doesn't enjoy riding but I'm working on that.

I'm in Pigeon Forge for the week on vacation. This morning I saw a nice 2nd Gen trike at the hotel where I'm staying. It had Pennsylvania plates. I was wondering if it might be one of our members. Does anyone know if we have any members visiting here?

Does anyone here have a rear brake reservoir for an "83 VR. Mine broke a while back when I tried to loosen the bolt to add fluid. I repaired it using JB Weld and it held for a while but today it broke again. I either need another reservoir or if someone can tell me something that I can repair it with.
