We planned a vacation around stopping at restaurants featured on Triple D. In four days, we visited 13 - and had the worst meal the closest to home Would have been to more but it was over the New Year's holiday and places were closed. Enjoyed talking with the owners and staff about their experience on the show. Hillbilly Hotdogs in WV was fun - and cheap. Great way to plan a ride!

The course in PA is free. If you have a permit and pass, they can issue the motorcycle license. They also have one for trikes, but nothing for sidecar rigs. I know guys that have ridden for years, took the course, and all said they learned something......usually what they were doing wrong!

If you reallly enjoy riding......take the safety course! My boyfriend (who has a bike that we never rode enough to suit me) encouraged me to get my license and I did, at the age of 52. Then he was scared I'd get a bike. So I did. See avatar. (which is really funny because I was planning on buying a scooter) After the first three months of ownership I figured I bought him a bike. We put lots of miles on it with him as pilot. He was extremely patient and helped me learn to drive all over the school parking lot. I was the Queen of Stalling. Who knew first gear could be so hard? The dang thing scared the heck out of me. My initial attempts would need a novel to tell the tale, and it was hilarious. I don't wait to ride anymore, I just go! Might work for you, might not. But taking the course is worth it, even if you don't plan on driving. IMHO

I put a car tire on the rear in October. Only about 150 miles on it so far. Thanks for the info!

It's my sister's fault... I told her I was planning on going and she said "you need a newer bike because everyone has is driving new ones" I said that mine isn't even broken in yet, based on everything I've read and folks I talked with. Just confirming my research.

Thanks to EVERYONE for the encouraging words and extra tips! The bike will be in for service this spring, and I'll take the list with me to be sure everything is in order. I really appreciate everyone taking the time to send a response. This site is amazing.....because of folks like YOU!

I have a 99 RSV with 02 California sidecar, new to me as of April 2011 The bike had 14,000 miles when I bought it, and only 16,000 now. Friends are planning a 2 week trip to Arizona this summer, about 5,000 +/- miles, and I would really like to join them. They are driving new HD's. I plan on making several trips before this to get used to distance driving. (more than the 1 to 3 hour jaunts I've been on so far) So the question is...........and I understand there are many variables..........do you think the bike will make it? Thanks in advance! MJ

Just put the car tire on the rear a few days ago. I read all there was to read on the darksider forum. With only 100 miles, I'm still in the "check it out" stage. Did have to adjust the tilt of the sidecar, and it rides great. Makes sense with the sidecar rig as I don't lean the same as a 2-wheeler. I haven't had it over 65 mph either. Then again, I'm new to sidecars and bikes as a driver, so it's all an experiment at this stage!

Was starting to wonder if anyone here had a sidecar! I bought a 99 Royal Star Venture with 02 California sidecar in April from a guy near Charlotte. The rig was put together by Wing and a Chair in NC. Pretty basic compared to others I've seen. Have the electric tilt and that's it. No raked trees or leading links, but I don't know any different so it's just fine. My first ever motorcycle and I'm having a great time. When the boyfriend is along he drives and I like the sidecar better than riding behind him on his bike. I am absolutely no help with technical issues. I did a lot of reading and parking lot practicing before heading out to the highway. Check out www.sidecar.com for information and links and downloads. Have fun!!!
