  1. Sorry guys, here it is. Danno Member #: 1711 Joined: 21 Sep 2005 Posts: 171 Location: Mass. North Shore/Merrimack Valley Posted: Thu May 25, 2006 8:51 am Post subject: Side Covers . Jon Tanner asked me to post pics of my side covers when I finished installing the Lexan inserts. So, here they are. I do have to apologize as some of them are rather out of focus. I have a real POS shop camera that is new to me (freebie) and haven't got it completely figured out yet. The inserts are gray PVC fr McMaster-Carr. The insert is 1/8 thk smoked Lexan fr McM-C. The adhesive is Devcon Plastic Welder fr Wallyworld. The screws are #4, 1/2 in lg, stainless steel, self tapping screws for plastic fr McM-C. I made cardboard templates to mark the Lexan. Then cut it out w a jigsaw. Baked in the oven at 360 deg for 6-7 min and formed them over the backside of the side covers. The inserts were cut on a tablesaw and then heat formed w a Wagner paint stripper heat gun. Thanks for posting this Danno. I just added this to my list of "things to do". It also looks like you put quite a bit of time into cleaning and polishing. She sparkles! Also, did you repaint all the body parts or just take off the stock striping and have it restriped? I like the striping style and color. I let you know how mine turns out! There's an Aspencade (early '90's) sticker on one of the windshield wings. I'm guessing that's where the pinstriping was done; and the wings put on too. . _________________ Dan C. Was it heat sheilding (legs), to keep the engine cleaner, or just to dress it up? My side covers had broken inserts that blocked the openings when I bought it. I took them out since I like to see the engine through the openings and thought it might run cooler. Since I have not ridden it yet (the carbs are being rebuilt and lots left to get road worthy) so I don't know how this will affect the driving and maintaining experience. Your final result looks sharp! http://www.venturers.org/Forum/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif glvwman _________________ '82 Virago 750 daily commuter Iron Butt #24661 SS1000 & BB1500 '84 XVZ12L project bike Back to top frankm http://www.venturers.org/Forum/images/avatars/2729397774577eca0a28b1.jpg Member #: 2055 Joined: 21 Sep 2005 Posts: 430 Location: Australia, Qld, Builyan Posted: Mon May 29, 2006 7:36 am Post subject: For what is worth, I've taped my leg warmers in the closed position. In Oz here, we don't get a lot of really cold weather riding my way. I found that if they came opened on a hot day, I almost fried. I understand that new louvers are no longer available. I have one blade missing in one of mine. I have been contemplating a dark plastic or the like to make a blanking plate with. Maybe a piece of my old windscreen would even be ok. Does the clear look good on the bike? _________________ Frank. Life's great. Even better on a VR. It doesn't affect the temp of the engine but it does make it much more comfortable riding on a warm day. Frank, I don't know, but I'm partial to smoked plastic. _________________ Dan C. '83 Std
  2. Please forgive me VentureRider.org for what I am about to do. Scott, Have a look at this mod to address your problem. I have purchased the Lexan and I am about to do this as well. http://www.venturers.org/Forum/viewtopic.php?t=6948&highlight= Thomas
  3. PEIslander, You need to check AC voltage at the connector to the rectifier. The connector is found under the seat on the same side as the stator (left side). Three white wires come from the stator. You should check each pair for AC voltage readings. Your actual numbers may be slightly different but the principle is the same. The higher the RPM the higher the output and all 3 pairs should be identical. Mine looks like this: @1000 RPM A&B=18.6 VAC A&C=18.6 VAC B&C=18.6 VAC @2000 RPM A&B=31.2 VAC A&C=31.2 VAC B&C=31.2 VAC @3250 RPM A&B=47 VAC A&C=47 VAC B&C=47 VAC Any variance at one pair and it means your stator is shot.
