  3. I pasted a picture in my last post but someone didn't see it... If you can't see the picture of the Strat lamps here it is: http://www.yamahasportsplaza.com/pages/catalogs/viewproductlargeimage/26/207/407/3659/1/0/0/1/4/90/66/35533/0/0/500/passing-lamps.aspx
  4. I stand corrected... I think I got my wire gauges wrong.. I think I used 14 gauge for the power wire and 16 on the switch side... and I must have used the running lamp circuit of my turn signals for the switch side of my relay cuz my passing lamps run on both Hi and Lo beams. I have the Roadliner/Stratoliner lights on my RSV with 55W Silverstar bulbs along with a running lamp bulb in the bottom and they light up the road pretty good especially the sides of the road which is important here in Maine... we have racoons, porcupines, fox, big deer, and moose to dodge. Moose are hard to see at night cuz they're brown and their eyes don't glow like the other crittahs. The Silverstars did kinda burn my little reflector cup thingys... they're now kinda bluish purple and not the silver in the pic. but still work great. http://images.motorsportdealers.com/common/MediaLibrary/CatalogImages/62/500/744134e9a.jpg I don't run my Hi beams during the day and get annoyed at people that blind me day or night... but that's just me. The law I was talking about is running your passing or any aux. lighting with your Hi beams... I do it myself but it is a law. Guys that have had dealers install their passing lights go off with Hi beam. Good post George... There's a right way to do it and a Mickey Mouse way to do it... I don't Mickey Mouse my bike.
  5. Probably the only thing that saved your setup from getting fried was you hooked them up to your High Beam... You don't run Hi Beams as much as Low Beam. Why wouldn't you run a relay? You trying to save 5 bucks ... You probably spent that on your mini fuses... And why hook them up to Hi beams? Do you know that's against the law in most States? I put a switch on mine cuz I thought I would shut them off during the day but I found out I'm much more visible during the day and leave them on all the time but have the switch if I ever have a charging problem. Saddletramp Don't even think of installing your passing lamps without a relay.
  6. 12 gauge fused wire from Battery > Relay Then Relay > Lights 14 guage wire from a switched power source .. can tap from head light... Headlight > switch then switch > relay Then ground the relay... Relay > Ground This setup gives you plenty of power to run your passing lamps as its getting fed from the battery via a heavy wire. But only comes on with the key and the switch allows you to shut them off when you want. If you just tapped into your headlight wire and hooked it up to your passing lamps it compromises the headlight circuit and your ignition. The relay is like a valve that is switched open and closed with your headlight circuit but is getting power from the battery. Hope I explained this right... I'm sure someone will say if I messed it up.
  7. With all due respect to your 40 years is the HVAC fieild Taz you're wrong about a couple of things... "fuel oil produces the hottest heat per unit of any other type of heat source( but you do get a oily smell in your house" Not sure where you got that info... I have a 275 gal oil tank in my cellar and it has a fill pipe and a vent pipe coming out of the top and both are run to the outside of the house... My question to you is where does the oily smell come from? I don't have an oily smell in my house. Maybe those Heat pumps work down there in Alabama... but I don't know any one in New England with one.. They probably don't work in Ohio either as Cleveland is pretty close to Boston in climate. Not sure about Ohio but here in Maine the only real choices are Oil, Propane, or wood.. Wood is the cheapest but a PIA and Oil is cheaper than Propane... Then you have the option of a Forced Hot Air Furnace or a Forced Hot Water Boiler which works with baseboards or radiant in floor heat. Furnaces are cheaper than Boilers and cost more to install but don't run as much as a furnace does. FYI I don't own an air conditioner we just open the windows.
  8. Every 1st gen rider I see is wearing overalls..... http://teenymanolo.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/redneck_overalls.jpg
  9. Don you need to go oil... either replace your propane furnace for oil or if you have an unfinished cellar you could upgrade to a oil fired boiler and install baseboards... you could save a lot of money by running the pipes (plastic Pex) yourself then have the heating guy install the boiler and baseboards... The oil guy should have a guy that comes in and tells you how much baseboard goes in each room... for kitchens without much outside wall and cabinets they have what are called kickers.. small radiators that fit under cabinets and have a fan and blow warm air through grilles in your kick panels... I used to have a hot air furnace and when I built my new house I went with a boiler... cut my heat bills by a 3rd, House is warmer, and would never go back to hot air. The boiler also heats my hot water so I got rid of the elec. hot water heater. Hope this helps.
  10. I got the regular sized one with 12K trouble free miles.. I upgraded the lights to LEDs.. Support from PB is great tho I never had to use it.
  11. I think if they go to a V-twin you can kiss the 5 year warranty goodbye.. probably go 1 or 2 years with mileage limit... Can't see anyone doing 5 years on an air cooled V Twin. I'd rather have a 120 hp V-4 with a 5 year warranty.

  14. I love LEDs but not for passing lamps... If you want a daytime running light and a passing lamp then get the Stratoliner Passing Lamps... they have 2 bulbs in each.. I have the Strat lamps but wired them together and I run Silverstar 55W bulbs and have no charging issues.

  23. Intermitent problems running... I would agree.. Ignition Switch.. Next time it happens try wiggling the ignition key and see if it fires up... Mine died one time and as I was gearing down in the breakdown lane I reached for the key and just touched it and it fired right up.. This was about the 4th time it happened.. Mine was under warranty and the dealer changed it even though I couldn't duplicate the failure.. FYI my dealer wasn't going to change it because he didn't have the special ignition bolts... He said they're designed so that to remove the ignition you have to destroy the bolts... something like chisling a slot in the head of the bolt so you can use a flathead screwdriver on it to get it off... I said put regular bolts on it.. couldn't see how it was going to stop a thief.
  24. Piggy vs. HF/Sears I was looking for a cheap trailer to do a 7000 mile trip and I looked at building my own and did a lot of research... You can go here to see what's involved with building your own.. http://www.gadgetjq.com/trailer.htm Homemade: You buy a Harbor Freight, Northern Tool, Pep Boys, etc. Utility trailer.. $130 - $200 depending on tire size, sales, or whatever other difference in price. Now you should narrow it to slightly larger than the size of your Cargo Box ( 6-18 inches) ... I notice a few here skipped that step.. I guess you can but I know I wouldn't want a 4 foot wide trailer behind my bike.. Now you go out and buy a Cargo Box at Sears, Pep Boys, etc for $90 - $300 depending on size or brand... bolt it together... Me I would want to weld it but that's just me... Throw a chunk of plywood on it.. paint it (unless you like a red frame and different color box and you're off and running.. Now if you're real handy and have some tools and score some really good deals and have you might still be under $300 but probably closer to $400. Piggybacker: I bought the 8" wheel model for $560 shipped to my job and had to put it together but it comes complete and has some nicer features the Homemade lacks (unless you upgrade it)... 3 Chrome wheels, chrome toungue, cooler rack, welded frame, extra set of wheel bearings and box latches and wiring inside the boxed welded frame.. This is a "Made in China" trailer and is not a top quality trailer but I have not had 1 problem with mine and I've got 12K+ miles on it... I did buy LED lights for it because of the RSVs low stator output and didn't want to be burning extra bulbs.. I would recommend LEDs to anyone building a trailer as well.. PB support is excellent from what I've read... Some buyers had issues with their PB e-mailed or called the Co and got replacement parts no questions asked, no charge.. Good luck with whatever you decide.. to me it was a No-Brainer.
