Brake Problems
ctraylor replied to mtman's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Brake fluid is water soluble. It the bike sat for a long time the master cylinder will sometimes rust on the inside and the first time you mash the brake the piston will stick in. Remove the rear master cyl. and clean and it will probably pump up. -
"I Gotta Quit Doing This!" or "Don't Forget Your Gremlin Bell!"

Sorry to hear that Todd. Aren't you getting to old to be sliding down the road on your back side. You remember the hills here in Mountain Home? I was mowing on the side of a hill yesterday and the mower turned over backwards on top of me and banged me up pretty bady. I have a hematoma on my right leg. I hope you get better quick. I was hoping to come out there sometime this summer and ride the Dragon with you. Curtis Traylor -
My wife and I made a trip up to Laramie, WY last summer and then across South Dakota to Sturgis. We experienced about a day and a half of a fierce cross wind. My wife had to hold her glasses on constantly and I leaned into the wind. I don't think I will ever cross SD again on a motorcycle. My wife almost took a bus home. We finally made it to Mt. Rushmore and out of the wind and had a wonderful time after that. Leaning into the wind was not bad but you really had to watch for small hills that break the wind or you will run off the road then suddenly when you pass the hill a very large gust will push you toward the center line. I finally learned to watch the country side and contemplate the gust and compensated. That was the worst riding experience I ever had.

Someone had drilled holes in my breather top and had put tape over them. The tape came off and it caused a bad hesitation upon take off. I replaced the tape and ran fine.

I thought Timken bearings were made in Mexico now. -
Wheel Bearing Recomendations
ctraylor replied to Condor's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If you remove the bearing and mic it Napa Auto Parts can match it with a sealed bearing for much cheaper than Yamaha. -
This may have been asked before but is there a ct to fit the back of the first gen?

I couldn't imagine that. We don't even lock our house and never have anything stolen in my life. My mother had her purse stolen once and a week later so someone felt guilty I guess and put her pictures and drivers liscence in our mail box. We didn't have credit cards back then. This is a great place to live......

My favorite mountain is Mt. Nebo in Dardenelle, AR. This is off hwy 7 across the river from Russellville, AR. Right out of Mountain Home, where I live, there is White River State Park on the White River and is a good place to camp. Give me a call if you are coming through Mountain Home and I'll show you around. There is also Bullalo Point on the Buffalo River. Curtis Traylor 870-405-3693

The more ethanol they add to the fuel the lower the fuel milage so when the gas gets so high their sales go down, they will just add more ethanol to sell more fuel.

How involved are MC inspections in your State?
ctraylor replied to Tartan Terror's topic in Watering Hole
No inspections in Arkansas. We ride whatever the hell we want down the road. Cops don't bother you unless you have a light out or are speeding. No helmet law unless you are under 21. -
I remove the right muffler so I can pull out the axle. Loosen the nut on the left side and the pinch bolt on the right and slide out the axle. The bracket that holds the caliper will just lift up and off. I always lube the splines on the drive shaft so I remove the final drive. Then with the bike on the center stand, I lean it over and let the right foot peg on the crash bar rest on a floor jack. The wheel will easily slid out the left side. I don't remove the saddle bags. I also strap the center stand to the front crash bar so it will stay put.

I removed the seat and wired in on the back harness. It is easy access under the seat. Instead of buying the adapter, I found it cheaper to buy 2 amber lights from Wal Mart and add the signals on the trailer and then you can just wire into the existing circuit. I used a 5 wire plug on the bike and trailer. I ran the tail lights through a toggle switch so I don't have to run them during the day. Only the brake lights and signals work until I turn on the tail lights.

I just bought 2 small amber lights and mounted them and wired my signal lights to them and the tail and brake to the existing lights. It will work good then. You don't have to buy the adapter.

I thinks that everyone should write this guy and chastise him for his shipping. I think this is very dishonest. He should make his money on the top side and not try to screw people with shipping.

If it runs with the choker on, what about the fuel pump. Is it coming on? Has the fuel filter been changed?

I pulled the mufflers off my 86 and on the back side I used a grinder with a cutting blade to cut a door, bent it back and cleaned the muffler out. I bent the flap back down and welded up. You can't see it from the front side. There are some tack welds you will have to drill out and weld up on the back of the muffler. Be careful if you use a torch. The first time I did it I got the chrome too hot and it turned blue. It sounds great to me.

Going across country is one thing but out of the country is entirely another. That in and of itself will probably stop alot of riders from coming. Some can't get a passport.

2 Questions about my 83 VR
ctraylor replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You might need to change the oil in the front forks for the banging or just put some air in them. They are air shocks. This can be done by turning the key to acc and using the control panel on the right side. If the control panel is not there you may have an air service port by the key if it is not a Royale. I changed the oil in my front forks and went with a 20 W fork oil which gave me a firmer ride and no more bottoming out. There is a full service manuel in here somewhere if you search for it for directions on changing the fork oil. Call me if you have any more questions. The difference between a first and second gen is the body style. Engine hasn't changed much other than appearance. -
What gas mileage do you get ?
ctraylor replied to greg_in_london's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have found that my 86 VR mileage varies with the temperature. If the temp is around 45 to 50 degrees F I get about 33-35 mpg. In July when the temp soars to 95 degrees F I get 42-43 mpg. The hotter it gets the better mileage I get. -
Starting Problem
ctraylor replied to DevilDog's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Mine did the same thing once and it turned out that the choke cable came unhooked from the choke down by the carbs. I wan't turning on the choke. It would not crank cold and would run the battery down unless you gave it a shot of ether. Maybe worth a shot. -
The White River in an around Mountian Home is in flood stage. The sheriff department had to rescue some with a helicopter in Norfork. We got 12 inches of rain in a very short time.
