This is the info I have been waiting to hear. I have new D404s on the bike now, but I intend to do my best to wear them out by July 4th. Then I will likely try the E3. Will hopefully get to wear them out too, but I doubt it. That's a lot of miles in a summer when we still have 4 kids at home. Would prefer not to come home to the locks being changed. RR

Maintenance on a RSV
RedRider replied to FL-Venture-Rider's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
+1 This bike has a 5 year transferrable warranty. The 2005 will still have a year warranty on it (maybe - depends when it was originally purchased). At 40k miles, you might be needing a clutch - or at least an updated clutch spring. If you are handy at all, with a little coaching, it should take you about 1/2 hour to do. A set of clutch friction plates are about $80, $10 gasket, $40 springs. You should be good to go. Other than that, some grease, oil change, gas, and go. Very reliable bike. RR -
Yes, it will also read and display your pictures. Sounds like you have it well in hand. RR

That is what I am looking to do with mine also. All I need now is to find a mating plug that I can wire to the Battery Tender hookup. RR

Cheesecake, right? Or anything else. Wow, Big Tom, you stepped in it bigtime. RR

Only if you can afford to completely loose $450. You will need to replace all the electrical as every connection will be corroded. If salt water got into the cylinders, sell it for scrap. RR

Johnny, Your best bet will be to get a Progressive manual pump. It is small, zero let off (doesn't leak air when you release it), and relatively inexpensive ($50). It is also good to have for setting air pressure in the front forks. Believe it or not, the best place to get one of these pumps is at your local Harley dealer. I see what you are going for though. With no pressure in the rear shock (min height), get on and let the bride get on. Pump up to add some softness to the ride. You could probably rig up one of the Slime pumps in the trunk. Run the hose out of the bottom of the trunk (there is a rubber plug under the trunk pad) and screw it onto the Schreider valve. Wire it thru a switch and fuse to the battery. Hit the switch and it will pump it up. Unfortunately, not sure how you would let the air out. Good luck. RR

Johnny, I am assuming you mean an accessory pump for airing the tires vs. a compressor for airing the suspension like on the 1st Gens. There are several makes and models available. I carry the el-cheapo from Walmart that costs about $10. Slime also makes a nice one fo about $30. It is a little more compact. If you are going to use one of these, you need to plumb in an aux power outlet that can handle the load. The outlet in the fairing is only fused to 5 amps and the pump takes 8. It will blow the fuse. Wire in an outlet that is fused with a min 10 amp fuse. Make sure the wires can handle that load also. RR

Peg, I have been reading this thread with amusement and amazement. I would cut your hubby some slack as he was surely just wanting to show you his love. Perhaps in his mind, the logical progression of bikes is an evolution from smaller metric bikes up to full Harley bagger. He might have just felt that your riding skills were improved enough to move 'up' the evolutionary ladder. The first organized ride I ever went on was a HOG rally ride. The young lady I was dating at the time rode a Sporty and had a brother-in-law that invited her to the HOG rally. I, of course, rode my new to me Venture (first bike). Every comment was very positive from every HD rider. There was not one stereotypical slam on 'riceburners' and they were all pleased to welcome a new rider - no matter what they rode. This changed my attitude towards HD riders pretty quickly. I was prepared to take abuse, but it didn't come. Thank your husband on his compliment to your skills, placate him with trying out a Sporty, and lovingly advise him you are happy to ride the 'paid for' V-Star. I wish my wife rode her own bike. Your husband is a lucky man. Besides, his friends are just jealous that he has a wife that rides. They may be taking it out on him that he doesn't love you enough to get you a HD. Just reassure him that we won't make fun of his bike when he comes on a ride with us either. Keep us up to date on how this gets resolved. RR

I certainly hope you take these in to the dealer service folks and show them why they shouldn't trust a mirror. You were within a few miles of needing the rear rotor replaced - not cheap. RR

It looks like the cassette survived. RR

Congrates on your growth spurt. And, congrates on making the team. Outstanding. Ohhh, to be young again. Please post your complete games schedule. Might be a great time for a Midwest M&E. Think you would be embarassed by having your own rowdy cheering section? RR

3. Switched back to dino oil, but haven't ridden it yet. Also did the Freebird clutch upgrade (change out the inner half disc for a full disc). RR

Jim, I believe the First Gear gloves and controller are private labelled Warm and Safe. Good stuff. RR

Heated gear - Gerbings or Warm and Safe. WnS is less expensive and works great. Get the Heat-Troller so you can adjust the temp of the heated gear - you can also turn it down to save on current draw. www.warmnsafe.com They currently have a sale on 2nds (just checked to confirm the website address). Don't disconnect the carb heaters. If you need the extra current for the heated gear, it is cold enough to need the carb heaters. Change out your lights to LEDs to save a few watts. Also, install a voltmeter to monitor the current draw. The new Dunlop Elite3 tires are being tested by a few on here. They sound interesting as it appears they have a thicker tread for longer life. Have never run them, but they will probably be my next set to try. You can also ship a set of tires to a dealer in Fairbanks to install when you get back from the Haul Road. Don't count on them having the correct sizes in stock - they won't. You may want to run one of the outlets through a relay, with properly sized wires, and a larger fuse to run a small air compressor. They draw 8 to 10 amps and will pop the fuse of the standard outlet. Good idea to have one of these along. Also, get a tire plug kit and know how to use it. Puruse the advrider.com website for tips in info about running Alaska. There is a lot of information on there specific to Alaska (and elsewhere). Here is the link to the Alaska forum http://www.advrider.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=68. Have a great time. RR

Craig, I understand your concern. However, at least up to this point, everyone I have meet from this website would be welcome in my house anytime (with the possible exception of one a**hat from New Port Richey, FL who is no longer a member). Saying that with the comfort of knowing I am a big guy, with a big dog, a nice cache of lethal instruments, and 3 good sized sons for protection . In my estimation, this site has the most courteous members of any group I have been associated with. Now, folks from some other sites, I might be more cautious. RR

So, do you guys think I should join the Dubuque Bruisers Football team?
RedRider replied to GG54172's topic in Watering Hole
You can do the MSF instructor thing when you are too old and decrepid to play football. You are only young once. Since you can work with an injury, give it a shot. You will be glad you tried (and maybe succeeded). RR -
Salt, Small town hotels and Motel6's are usually cheaper. You can also do what Wildhair (Lowell) - VR Ambassador - does; put out a riding schedule and mouch off the inmates here. We are generally pretty good about having an extra bed around. You meet nice folks, often have a hand for any minor maintenance, and often get a meal or two (and an adult beverage or two). Also, check into the available Bed and Breakfast places on the way. Downside to that is you generally will need reservations and that means you have to stick to a schedule. I have also heard things about CouchSurfing.com. This is a website for folks to share their lodging for travellers. Never used it though. Enjoy the trips. RR

When I was 26, I went out for the Charlotte rugby team. Played in college and for a couple of years after graduation on a city team in a steel town. I practiced a couple of times with the Charlotte guys, drank a few beers with them afterwards, and decided it was for younger guys. However, I am really glad I gave it a try. The difficult part is - Can you do your job with an injury? I was in sales at the time and was travelling a lot and spending time on the customer's factory floor. These were things I could not do with crutches. Since I had a reconstructed knee from a previous sports related injury, and a child on the way, I decided to walk away. Bottom line - what is the down side? If you do engineering at a desk and will maintain your employment with an injury, go for it. Otherwise, you have a family to support. Let us know what you decide. Sounds like a lot of fun. RR -
Is this the chrome one or the color coded one? RR

A buddy of mine is heading to Indy this week and mentioned there was a nice MC store there. He couldn't recall the name. Apparently, it is like the Iron Pony (Columbus, OH), but not quite as big. Can anyone in the Indy area help with the name of this place. I know this request is rather generic and may not include enough info. However, I thought I would run it up the flagpole and see if anyone knows. Thanks. RR
