  1. Goose, Great writeup. Thank you. A couple of items you may want to include. 1) What is the special tool? P/N and source 2) What is the required shim kit? P/N and source (BuddyRich input seemed to have it but the link didn't work - would prefer a source other than an EBay seller even though it may cost more). 3) P/N for valve cover gasket (if needed to be replaced). 4) Valve clearance tolerances (from the repair manual). 5) How do you rotate the engine? I'm sure this is in the manual also. Does the cover exposing the nut used to rotate the engine require a replacement gasket? 6) Nut size for rotating the engine? Need to make sure we have the right socket available. Just minor details, but will make it a more complete write up. Again, very well done. Thank you for your continued excellence in sharing your Venture mechanical expertise. RR
  2. Yup, bring him along. We can split the faring and whatever else. RR
  3. Kevin, Might want to get here by 6 or 7. Depending on how many are coming in Friday night, we may hang around and drink beer or head to the Guess Who concert and drink beer. I'm pretty easy either way. If you are going to be later than that, it's OK too. Just let me know. Don't need anything else but your toothbrush. RR
  4. Just received an update from the Lake Express this morning that they are having a round trip fare sale. Not a huge savings, but it looks like a round trip with M'cycle would be $220 (including the $5 each way fuel surcharge - if still in effect). Assuming no traffic difficulties, it is an easy 1.5 hour ride to my house from the ferry dock. Would love to have you here and to meet some of our Wolverine friends. RR
  5. While it is a beer brewed and based in Milwaukee, I would become a wine drinker if Miller was all that was available. I also share your disdain for wheat beer (too sweet). Give me a full bodied PBR or a good Pale Ale and I am happy. I also figured out long ago that if I drank light beer, I would still be fat. Therefore, it makes no sense to give up the taste. Perhaps I will need to try a Lone Star while in Texas. Beer is like bread - it spoils over time. It may be similar to my experience with Falstaff - was a great beer when purchased in Ft. Wayne (where it was brewed) but nasty swill anywhere else I tried it. We shall see. RR
  6. Ear plugs, eye drops, flashlight, cell phone, small tube of sunscreen, small rag to clean rearview mirrors, notebook, pen, gum, chew, I-Pass (if traveling thru Chicago), maps, extra VR Gremlin Bell in case I meet a Venture rider, pressure gauge. RR
  7. The KLR650 is certainly a fun, pound around bike. For the long distance touring, I recommend the Sargent seat. Much more comfy than the stock board. RR
  8. The cooler weather is just a bonus. To busy with other rides ... and family things ... to do it sooner. Please tell me I wouldn't be subjected to Lone Star beer when I get down there! That stuff is nasty. I will bring down some good Wisconsin Microbrews (Sprecher, Gray's, etc.) to pay homage to the masters. RR
  9. I would like to run to Texas sometime to learn from the gurus how to set the valves and set the floats. I can then extend this knowledge up here in Great Flyover Country of the Midwest. Goose is a one day ride (1100 miles), BuddyRich might be doable in a day (1330 miles). Could do this in a 3 day weekend if we don't spent too much time consuming the honorary beverages. Would some of you be willing to teach a Grasshopper your mechanical Ninja secrets? Perhaps a weekend in late Sept. or October? Maybe in the spring? RR
  10. Address: N5552 Rademann Drive, Fond du Lac Directions: No matter where you come in from, you will need to ride on 151. Be careful of your speed on this highway. It is patrolled heavily. Don't go over 60 on this 55 MPH road. From the Nort' - 41 South to 151 bypass on the south side of FDL. Head East on 151. Take Cty Rd V South (BP station on North side). Take an immediate left on Reinhart Rd - it is 35 MPH on this road and the Sheriff checks occasionally. Watch for deer on this road. Take the first left (approx. 1 mi.) on Rademann Drive. 4th house on the left (brick farmhouse). From the Sout' (and you Flatlanders): 41N to 151 bypass. Head East on 151 and follow the directions above. From the East (Sheboygan area): Head West on 23 to 151 bypass South (just past the Hospital). 151 will bend to be heading West. Head South to Hwy 45 towards Eden (don't think Eden is marked on the road). 2nd right is Cty Rd K. You can only turn right. Go to the top of the hill and turn right on Rademann. 2nd house on the right. From the West (Madison): Head East on 151 or 23 depending on where you are coming from. If on 151, continue past Hwy 41 to Cty Rd V. Follow directions above. If on Hwy 23, take it until you reach Hwy 41. Go South on 41. Follow directions for coming from the Nort'. My cell number is in my profile. Almost always have it on me. As for tools, I think I have it covered. We will have 2 CarbTunes, so an additional long screwdriver may be helpful. If anyone has a tach, it might be nice. My thoughts on a schedule: If anyone is coming in Friday night - we may head over and watch The Guess Who. Saturday morning: about 8:00, head out for a breakfast ride to the Mine Shaft in Hartland. Back about 10:30 or so. Maintenance until 3:00 or until we are done. Ride for a couple of hours thru the Kettle Morraine area with a stop for ice cream. Back to the house for Venison Keilbasa and beer. Sit around the deck and try to finish off the PBR. Sunday morning: Head out for a morning ride throught the Holylands for breakfast in Valders. Back to the house and finish up any maintenance items left. Does anyone want to see a clutch being done (My bike doesn't need it, but it is easy enough to take it apart and put it back together again to show the procedure). Splitting the faring and greasing the plugs? Installation of a Stebel horn? Review the ignition switch bypass? Plugging a tire? Other procedures? I wish we had Goose coming so he could show us the float adjustment. I will be doing this over the winter and maybe could show it next year (if it isn't too much of a hassle). In the process of cleaning out the garage, epoxy painting the floor, and cleaning the workshop. Not sure how the house will look, but the mancave will be ready. FYI: You will probably be greeted by Gilbert - large St. Bernard. His size may be intimidating, but he is very friendly. RR
  11. Got ya down. RR
  12. OK, here's what we have so far: Definite (or pretty darn sure): Danimal w/ Brother Red1 Jeff2053 RUMN1 ScooterBob + bride gac-ride wkoepke KevinsDa1 Calperin Flyinfool IH Truck Guy jarrejx and Winger friend YamaQman Maybe: Starbog (need to get this confirmed so I can get some Heiny's in the fridge) easu1 + wife minnmac renate Now, I need to know - when everyone is coming in. Friday night or Saturday. And how long would you like to stay. I am open all weekend. Just want to plan for meals and beer. Also, if there are just a few coming in Friday night, we might be able to head over to the fairgrounds and watch The Guess Who in concert. We can all fit in the Suburban so no concerns about drinking and riding (or riding around bunches of folks that have been drinking). I figure Saturday night will be the venison keilbasa night along with sitting around the fire and swapping lies. Also, would be helpful to know desired sleeping arrangements. Tent, couch, or hotel. We have 4 couches that are long enough for most anyone. 2 more that would accommodate those that are vertically challenged. Lots of floor space too. Plenty of room for tents (and have 1 tent here to set up if you don't want to drag yours along). Let me know. RR
  13. Make sure to stop at Young's Lobster Pound in Belfast. You will get a lobster roll of a lifetime. YLP buys lobsters from fisherman right at their dock. They will then take one of these fresh lobsters and throw it in the pot and make the lobster roll immediately. You can't get any fresher unless you can cook underwater. It is outstanding. Red barnlike structure on the north side of the river/inlet just of Hwy 1. Your welcome (you will thank me later). RR
  14. Yup, I do that on my KLR almost everytime I ride it. Should have a 6th gear. It helps if you go with a 16T sprocker (although I haven't installed mine yet). RR
  15. ScooterBob and all others, Looks like we are going to light this rocket. I will need to thaw out the venison keilbasa for a good feed. RR
  16. Cindy and Dale, This is welcome and wonderful news. Get some sleep, it will be a big day tomorrow. Look forward to hearing the final results. RR
  17. Not if you only push it back a little. I have changed out old to new pads and have never opened the reservoir. The only time I have opened the reservoir is to flush fresh fluid thru the line. RR
  18. OK all; it appears we have a handful of 'Will be there' and a handful of 'Maybes'. Good enough to make this a go. Just for you 'Maybes' - there Maybe beer still in the fridge for you. Just for edification: tools currently on hand - Carbtune - sync carbs - 10 to 30 minutes ColorTune - set mixture - 1 hr Lift and lift adapter - grease splines, install Dynabeads for balancing, oil change, brakes, etc. - varies Wrenches and various tools - clutch work, electrical work, etc. Let me know what else might be needed or wanted done. I am on the SE corner of Fond du Lac. Have plenty of room for lots of folks - camping or couches. Inside parking if it rains for a good dozen bikes. More details as this shapes up. RR
  19. I'll be in Ft. Wayne the following weekend for my folks 50th anniversary. Small world. RR
  20. I would be very surprised if the bearings were damaged. Needing re-packing with grease? Perhaps. Having done this last winter, it is a PITA - but not hard. Good luck. RR
  21. FYI - Save the money and purchase the plugs from the local auto parts store rather than the Stealer. Same part number and everything. RR
  22. An extra enticement - It is the same weekend as the Fond du Lac County fair. The Guess Who are playing Friday night and 38 Special on Saturday night. Or - we can do a bonfire. RR
  23. OK all you Cheeseheads and northern Flatlanders. I have clearance from the tower to have a Maintenance Day at the Estate on July 18th/19th. Wife and daughter will be heading to northern Illinois for a basketball tourny, and that leaves me to my own devices. I know it is kind of short leadtime, but we can pull this together. The VR calendar has been checked and there appears to be no conflicts. What do you say? Anybody up for beer, brats, and wrenches? Fond du Lac, WI - kind of in the middle of everything. Plenty of ground for camping, beer fridge is full (as of now), workshop is fairly clean, garage is ... well, I will need to work on that. Let me know if there is still interest and we will get it set up. RR
  24. The KLR is a fun machine. The first ride I took on it was in fine powder sand in the Francis State Park in SC. I had never been off road before and it was quite a bit different. The guys I was with just advised to do exactly what you would least expect to do. When the front end starts to wash out, give it the gas. Sure enough, it comes right around when you do it. My new Sargent seat just arrived today. I couldn't stand the stock 'board' for more than 150 to 200 miles. We will see how this goes. Also, have installed HappyTrails hard panniers, Nerf bars (crash bars), highway pegs, raising links, Acerbus hand guards, 1" bar risers, master cylinder protector, aluminum skid plate, Zumo mount, 4" extended windshield, official Kawa KLR tailbag. Done the license plate mod, de-Californication, added IMS pegs with springs, and footpeg lowering brackets. Made and installed a 4" tool tube. Also have a 12V electrical plug and a 16 tooth sprocket to put on once I get time. It is never ending. PM your address and I will send you a throttle lock for this baby. It is a Cat O-Ring that fits between the bar end and the throttle hand grip. I got 3 of them when I ordered. Now that I installed the hand guards, they no longer work for me. Will have to use a Cramp Buster. Still need to do the Doo, 22 cent mod, and drill out the slide. Once that's done, the only thing left is to add extra lights (HID), perhaps a fork brace, some tank panniers, and ride, ride, ride. This baby is taking me to Prudhoe Bay in 2011. However, farkles for the KLR sure are cheap compared to the Venture. Great pictures. Enjoy yourself, but be careful. It is a long way to the ground on this bike. RR
  25. Depends on which Corbin seat it is. If it is the king/queen (driver/rider) as one seat, it can be much more. If it also has the backrest, it can be $300+ (gone higher on EBay). Edit: Reread the original and realized he was looking for a price for the OEM seats, not the Corbin. Never mind. RR
