I used this fine piece of machinery last weekend to tighten my steering head bearing. Works as advertised. Very nice and fits perfectly. Easily worth the money. You are going to need this tool sooner or later. Buy it now. RR

I might also suggest putting a rubber band (or a velcro wrap) around the pant leg. Kind of like what you did as a kid to keep your pant leg from catching in the bicycle chain. Just a thought. Oh, and to answer your original question - Pinwall Cycles. RR

Got a call from Russell Day Long Wednesday and it sound like the upgrade of your old seat will arrive next week. WooooHoooo. Hoping to get some wrenching time in tomorrow. May have to go over to the MIL's house and do some plumbing work though. Did I mention I hate plumbing work? I do. Oh well, it will afford me at least another guilt free wrenching day in return. RR

Yup, go to a locksmith and get 2 or 3 copies of the ignition key made. Hide one on the bike (zip tie to underside of trunk, electrical tape wrap on the frame, etc.). Just don't put the extra key in one of the saddle bags. RR

carb float level with Bubs?

No rejetting required for the Bub pipes. What pipes you have do not effect the required carb float levels either. At least I hope not. I am in process of setting them to V7Goose's writeup specs - and i have Bub pipes. RR -
Randy, A trailer gets kind of squirley if pulled empty. Stop by a hardware store and pick up a bag of rock salt (60 lbs or so) and it will travel just fine. Congrats on a great buy. RR

Is your luggage key different from your ignition key? On my RSV they are all the same. RR

Yup, bring it on up. Scotter Bob and I will get you set up. By the time you get here I will know how to do the float level adjustment (took the carbs out today). We can burn a weekend and get those other states filles in. RR

Greasing Swing Arm bearings?

Lubing anything is just like oil changes. Considered standard maintenance and not covered under the warranty. RR -
First, Blue locktite on the rotor bolts, not Red. Second, there should be a bolt at the bottom of the pumpkin for draining the rear end. Once drained, there should be a fill bolt about half way up the pumpkin. Replace the bottom drain nut, and fill until fluid reaches the opening of the fill bolt. Replace fill bolt and you are done. SAE 80W90 gear lube or the synthetic equivalent. Lastly, you should not have to bleed the brakes after replacing pads. The hydraulics are never opened. However, how long has it been since you changed out your brake/clutch fluid? If it's been more than a couple of years, it would be a good idea to do that also. Hoping to get started on it tomorrow. I'm going to be the good house slave today in exchange for guilt-free shop freedom tomorrow. Not sure I will get to the valves, but I will have the carbs off (setting float levels), the front fairing off (tightening steering head, adding risers and rerouting cables if needed). Already have the rear end taken apart (inspection of gears, lube drive shaft splines, pins, and hub spline, replace circlip damaged last time I lubed pins). I will post pics when I get it all torn apart. They will be X-Rated since the Venture will be almost naked. RR

Pop off the gas tank and check connections under there also (if Squidley's lead doesn't take care of you). There are a couple under there that get overwhelmed (had to replace one on the road cause it basically melted). It could also be trouble with the starter circuit at the key switch. It is a notorious weakspot on these fine machines. If the easy stuff we described don't take care of it, take it back to the dealer and have them check it out. The key switch is not cheap and it appears your '06 should still be under warranty. Report back on what you find. RR

$25.88 each on Bike Bandit. I bought a set of these gaskets from FDL along with a set of carb bowl gaskets and, IIRC, it was about $85. You may want to chat with the Service Manager (I think his name is Al) cause $120 for the set sounds kind of high. You may want to ask if that includes the rubber seals around each bolt. Bike Bandit has them for $6.23 each (total of $100 for the 16 req'd - doubt they are included). Overall, the boys in FDL are a really good dealer. They have been straight shooters with me for several years. It doesn't sound like they gave you any trouble with the warranty claims. That's good. Glad you able to get this done early in the year while there is still snow on the ground (for those non-Wisconsinites - it snowed last night). RR

Nope, check pressure religiously (and have never done a burnout). The first D404 blew up on me running thru West Virginia with just over 5000 miles on it. I had checked the pressure but never looked at the rear of the machine to check the tread (stupid of me, I know). It was replaced with another D404 (all that was in stock) that took me home. The very next trip, I had to change out that tire on the road due to wear almost to the cord. 4600 miles. They suck. Put on an Elite3 and have been very happy. Will know by June what the mileage will look like. Should have 7 or 8 thousand miles on it by then. RR -
If you want to go try on several different styles - from cheap to good - take a ride down to the Iron Pony (www.ironpony.com) in Columbus . They are on Westerville Rd just inside the loop on the NE side. They carry every helmet know to man along with just about everything else. It appears to be about 2 hours from you. A nice Saturday morning ride. RR

Come up here and ride in Wisconsin. She will never again complain about being cold in Texas. Seriously, chaps are a really good solution. Another option is actual motorcycle riding pants. Firstgear makes a heavier lined (removeable) cool weather riding pant that includes CE armor at the knees and hips. If I recall correctly, they are available in women's sizes. She could easily ride down to 35 or 40 degrees without being cold in these pants. Even colder if she wore a pair of jeans or longjohn (or winter weight Under Armor) under them. Recommend www.newenough.com if you want to go the Firstgear avenue. They are a banner sponsor of this website and are great folks to work with. Purchase several things from them. RR

I just saw an ad for a completely tricked out LD ready bike. Wow, I have a long way to go. Will definetely need the stator upgrade. Check it out if you want to see what an Iron Butt Rally contender really looks like. Actually, she will occasionally fly somewhere to meet me. She doesn't like the LD rides. As a matter of fact, I am heading out May 1st to ride from my house (Fond du Lac, WI) to your town (San Antonio, TX) - straight thru. If my routing is correct, it is about 1325 miles. If I can average 62 mph (including stops), it should take 21.5 hours. I will need to keep the gas stops to NASCAR pit stop times. My target is averaging 64 mph. This would allow me to get 1500 miles in 24 hours (IBA Bun Burner Gold). We shall see. RR

OK, I've ordered my 5 gallon tank with the overflow vent and ground lug connection. I will have to see how well it will fit on the current mounting board. Should be OK, but we will have to see. I will post pics when it is installed. This should give me about a 350 mile range. There are a lot of DQs within 350 miles. RR

The Lake Express Ferry just announce that motorcycles will travel free in May and June. Also, if reservations are made online, they will be free Sept and Oct as well. This is a great way to avoid Chicago traffic. My wife and I (and the Venture) have taken it a couple of times. Ken, Most of these little compressors pull 8 to 10 amps. Make sure there is a fuse in the line that can handle it. DO NOT plug it into the aux power port (cig lighter). It is only fused to 5 amps. I added an additional pigtail with heavier wire (12 ga) and a 15 Amp fuse. I covered the connector with a finger cut from disposable mechanics gloves and put a twist tie on it. It is laying under the seat along the frame. I will need to remove the seat to get to it, but if I have a flat, that will be the least of my worries. RR

Lonna, I mentioned Wustof (just misspelled it) in the second post. They are great knives (I have had a set for many years - they work, and look, like new). As to the difference between the $149 and $499 sets (if for the same type and number of knives), difference will likely be the steel alloy used and the handle construction. Just and FYI, top shelf knives like Wustof and Henckel are hand wash only - no dishwasher. The Calphalon knives will be a private label made by someone else. Not sure who. RR
