Well, my 5 gal aux tank arrived today, my Russell Day Long seat arrived last week, completed all the maintenance (other than a Carbtune and brake fluid flush), and am ready to start the riding season. The aux tank fit beautifully on the 3 gal mounting board. Need to pick up a brass fitting and some fuel line at Fleet Farm, but other than that, the ride is gtg. I did find with the aux tank on the pillion seat, I couldn't get the trunk open. However, I removed the passenger backrest and could get the trunk almost to the locked open position. Just need to put some bolts with rubber washers in the mounting holes and I will be done with the tank mounting. I will post some pics this weekend. I am ready to go burn lots of dead dinosaurs! With the aux tank, should get 350 to 400 miles per fillup. Sorry, I'm rambling. Time for bed. RR

They make the Lexan covers for the KLR and VStrom that attach with the Velcro buttons. I suspect it is a pretty common item for many bikes. RR

tire change

As for the oil leak, it may have been from the air box. Mind you, I have a 2nd gen, and yours may be different. But there is a crankcase vent that goes up to the airbox for vapors. It will pool a little bit of oil, but no big deal. I suspect it was just that draining. RR -
Mike, That is a beautiful and unique farkle. I never would have even thought of that. Absolutely outstanding look. Nice job. RR

It even states in the shop manual that there will be metal pieces caught by the magnet. Clean it off, refill with 80W90, and ride. RR

Got it completed last night and tried to start it up. I was really worried cause it didn't even hit. Then - Dohhh! - I recalled having to turn on the petcock so gas would get into the carbs. Vroomm. Started right up. It doesn't idle very well, but I haven't made any carb adjustments. Carbtune and possible Colortune will be done this week. Then just some minor cleaning up on the engine chrome, a little wax on the trunk, front fender, and tank, and I will be riding. RR

However, with all the forest rats we have up here, the extra lights will keep the rest of me safer. I just put an extra set of knee pads in my riding pants when the weather gets too cold. This seems to be enough to keep them warm. RR

Thank you. I don't have those, hence not knowing what the holes were for. However, that does give me some ideas for a lighting bracket. Hmmmmm... RR

Not quite yet. Everything is done but I am thoroughly cleaning everything before it gets put back on. All that is left are the saddle bags and reinstalling the battery. Hope to get that done this evening. RR

I was buttoning up the fairing after several weekends of maintenance and mods and noticed something on the bottom of my passing lamp bracket. There are 2 little squares welded onto the bar that appear to have tapped holes in the bottom of them. This might be a nice place to add an aux light mounting bracket. If no one knows what I am talking about, I will post a picture. Thoughts? RR

No. You have to get a separate update for each registered GPS - and you can't get an update unless you register. For more info, go to: www.zumoforums.com RR

Glad everything worked out OK. You may want to check your steering head bearings for looseness. Also, check your rear tire. If everything is properly adjusted, that speed should still be smooth as glass. RR

I wear Firstgear Kilimanjaro Textile jacket with armor, Venture pants with upgraded armor (either Air when warm or Solid when cooler), boots, gloves, and full face helmet - all the time. ATGATT. Dress for the crash, not the ride. RR

Dave, It is from TourTank (www.tourtank.com). It has the internal baffle, vent (with optional turnover flow restrictor), and grounding tab required for IBA criterion. That is really why I got this - along with increasing to almost maximum allowed fuel). My 3 gal unit has the baffle, but does not have the vent (it looks like it has the vented cap) or the grounding tab. The 5 gallon unit is not listed in the motorcycle tank section, but it is in their auto/custom section. They just build it up as a motorcycle tank with the required features. It doesn't cost anymore than the standard motorcycle tanks. About $250 or so (don't recall the shipping). It also comes with the mounting straps. RR

Got my notification that my 5 gal aux gas tank is on its way. WoooHooo. Should provide 350+miles between stops (IB rules state you must stop every 350 miles for certified rides - however, not rallies). The Russell Day Long saddle is also in the big brown truck. Should be a good weekend (if I can get the bike back together). Once the tank gets here, I will see how it fits on the current 3 gal tank mounting board. If it doesn't fit, I will post the 3 gal aux tank with the mounting board for sale and make a new one for the 5 gal unit. If the 5 gal tank does fit on the mounting board, I will post the 3 gal for sale with a mounting board pattern only. If you are looking for 100+ mile extended range, keep on open eye for a post on Saturday. RR

I have a nice 2XLT FirstGear Killimonjaro jacket that is 3 years old. You will need to be a big guy for this to fit. I am 6'4", 270 and it is a little wide of shoulder and long of sleeve. Excellent jacket (I purchased another on a little smaller) that is very warm with the liner, good circulation with the vents open, and completely waterproof. The jacket is red/black. I currently have it for sale on advriders.com for $125 shipped. Would let it go for $100 plus actual shipping (not much of a bargin, but there would be some savings I think). Depending where you are in IL, I could possibly deliver (travel to St. Charles, IL area frequently). Let me know if you are interested. RR

Karen, We definately need to get together so you can impress upon my wife how it is great when I go out and ride so she can clean the house without interuption. Seriously though, I look forward to meeting you this summer. Thank you for letting Bob come help yesterday. You are very understanding - I see why Bob loves you so much. RR

Got the valve shims all taken care of with help from Scooter Bob. None were more than 0.06mm tight, but they are now all on the loose side of the valve clearance tolerance. I had to drill and chisel off one of the allen bolts holding one of the chrome covers since it would not release. Once I get the stud removed and the hole retapped, I will be able to put it all back together again (I hope). As of now, I have pieces and parts all over the garage workshop. It is a real mess. Not really good pictures, but this is my steed in all her naked glory. Thanks again Bob for the help today. Took hours off the time required to get this taken care of. RR

Jeff, Glad you got some wind in the face. I am still wrenching. So far - 1) Tighten steering head bearing 2) Added handle bar risers 3) Rerouted throttle cables 4) Changed oil 5) Changed rear end gear oil 6) Upgraded to PCW clutch spring and replaced some blue'd steels 7) Lubed the pins and spline 8) Pulled the carbs, cleaned them up, and set the float levels Still to do - 1) Lube drive shaft spline and put pumpkin back on 2) Replace rear wheel 3) Set valve shims (hoping to do tomorrow) 4) Change coolant 5) Check front brakes 6) Replace brake and clutch fluid 7) Put it all back together and hope it runs 8) Wash and wax I am really wanted to ride, but I've got to get this done. If your bored tomorrow (I guess it's later today by now), come on up. Scooter Bob may be stopping by for some wrenching supervision (him supervising, me wrenching). RR
