Yup, the CCC HID headlight does turn night into day. However, you will need to add a switch to manually turn on the headlight after the bike is started. The starting pull from the engine pulls the voltage down far enough to distinguish the light if it turns on normally. The manual override takes care of it. If you would like to do something a little less involved, you can get a major upgrade by changing the stock 0.5 candlepower headlight to a Sylvania Silverstar Ultra. It is truely plug and play and will significantly improve your lighting. Not quite HID, but much better than stock. RR

Just think of the money you will save on preprinted nametags. RR

This reminds of the story I heard of someone who was repairing his motorcycle transmission and had all the parts laid out in the order it gets reassembled. His wife cleaned the area up and put them all in a box. That was one expensive cleaning bill. And no, it wasn't me. My wife does not generally venture into the garage. And she sure as heck won't clean it. RR

Kick stand reminder.......again.

Yeah, I hate it when you get old and things start falling off. Fortunately, mine is a grade 8 so it is still working fine. RR -
The floor is wood. Use nails or screws to put in anchor points. Nail a couple of 2x4s next to the front wheel to keep it straight. Orrrrr, hire one of us nutcases to ride it from wherever you are to wherever you are going. RR

I have one!!! However, it was built in 2000 and is painted red. RR

Depending on how taxes go today, I may be able to help tomorrow. Going to be doing a little maintenance on mine if I get finished giving my pound of flesh to the gubment in time. RR

Picked up my first 6 locations during my recent trip. Kansas, Oklahoma, Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah. This is a fund raiser for Eddie's Roads. Eddie's Roads is an organization founded to combat child abuse. It is run by Lisa, fiance' of the late, great Eddie James. This is a good organization and good, honest folks running it. Eddie James was an icon in the Long Distance riding world. He was taken from us too early by the negligence and stupidity of a cage driver in Atlanta. His wit and character is sorely missed by many. However, I am not a native Wisconsinite, therefore, it is for bourbon. Actually, it is a 5 gallon auxilliary gas tank. RR

I've got them uploaded from the camera. Just have to sort them so only the family oriented pictures get posted. Think Sunset Strip, not Provo, Utah Actually, just kidding. All pics are family friendly. However, there are 134 of them and not all are good. The wife has a few items for me to take care of before I get access to the computer though. All in due time. Here are a couple of samples. RR

Made it home about 7:00 this evening. The weather the last couple of days has been fantastic. Too bad all the riding was just squaring off my tires on I80 in Nebraska, Iowa, and WI. Anyhoo, it's nice to be home. 5800 miles total. RR

Wait until Yamaha starts shipping the Tenere'. The dual sport numbers should jump. RR

Well, I had a nice day of riding south in I15, to hwy 50 east, to I70 east. It came to a screaching halt just short of Vail. Vail summit to the Eisenhauer bridge is under 'chain up' orders. Once this clears, I should have clear sailing to the home port. 1100 miles MOL, looks like I will need to go into rally mode. I was hoping to be riding thru Nebraska tonight. It is only a little less boring in the dark.

Pre-trip maintenance tips please
RedRider replied to ThomWill's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Beaver, good point on the spare key. Also, carry a tire plug kit and know how to use it. Hopefully you wont need them, but I carry a couple of soft straps. If you need to have your bike towed/trailered, the tow jockey won't have them. It might save some serious scratches if you have a problem. RR -

Multiple gloves for different weather. Depending where you are going, it can get quite cold at elevations. Good, and I mean very good, rainwear is worth its weight in gold. If you intend to ride at night I would change out the headlight bulb with a Silverstar Ultra. It makes a huge difference vs. the standard dim candle (take along the stock bulb as your spare along with a spare brakelight 1157 IIRC). Take some tools - wrenches thru 19mm, set of hex wrenches, multitool, duct tape(small roll smashed flat), electrical tape. And of course, the most important is a phone and a credit card. Have a great trip. RR -
Yes, Salt Lake City. The weather broke enough to make it to Provo. Started snowing harder and there isn't much south on I15. Trying to make out of the Rockies on I70 thru Denver. Some local knowledge of Hwy 6 between I15 and I70 would be helpful. Don't know if it is safe to take 6 or just continue down 15 to 70 at Beaver. Anybody local for some help? (Guess I will check the VR contact list). Things could be worse. Just got a call from my brother who was riding back from LA to Dallas and had a major oil leak. He is stranded on the side of I10 east of El Paso. He has some business contacts that are on the way to rescue him with a trailer. He rides a Honda Shadow 1100. Up till now it has been pretty bulletproof. The Venture has been running like a dream. It is really frustrating to only get 200 or 300 miles a day. If the weather cooperates, I may need to do a Bun Burner Gold (1500 miles in 24 hrs) to get home for work on Monday. Just need to get out of these damn mountains so I can dodge tornadoes. RR

I am sitting in a hotel lobby in Lake Point (just west of SLC) unable to continue riding because of the snow. I can probably make it to town if anyone is interested in catching a cup of coffee. I may be here for a while until I can find a clear way out of these mountains. RR

clutch and brake levers for gorilla hands?
RedRider replied to Bobcatpat's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I sat on a new Venture a few days ago and noticed the levers are fairly wide compared to mine. When did that change take place? RR -
Love to take advantage this evening. However, the snow in SLC and WY are keeping me from getting that far east. Grrrrr! RR
-
Jeff, Guess that means you don't need to borrow my trailer. Yup, ready for the snow to go away so I can ride. It has until Thursday to go away. My first ride starts Friday. Nothing like taking a bike out of winter storage and the shakedown cruise is a 5700 mile jaunt to CA and back. RR
