  1. I cut the corners off the rubber bumper so they would slip in. Much easier to do if you loosen the inner fairing. As for the ignition cover, I cut the corners off it too. Doesn't look the best, but since I hardly ever wash my bike, it doesn't show up. RR
  2. Jeff, All this time you thought you were good looking. Now you know the truth. RR
  3. +1 on the shifter pivot bolt. That needs a touch of LocTite. If however, you do loose it while away from the shop, you can use one of the bolts in the battery side panels. They are just ornamental anyway. BTW - we are talking about BLUE Loctite. Not Red. RR
  4. Nope, you can't fix it. I will be glad to come over and take this problem child from you. You're welcome. POR will work fine. Lots of options for getting the rust out. Nuts and bolts, Coke, etc. Nice find. RR
  5. And, you will like the longevity. RR
  6. I know, so have Hardleys and John Ryan on an FJR (I think that masochist from Florida did it on a Ningette or a Honda 125). It is my lack of skills in the gravel combined with insufficient desire to go there. Not worth the risk. RR
  7. Oh wait, I just read the rules. You can't get to the capital of Alaska via roads (did you know that?). Don't have time on our trip to take the ferry. I'm out for Alaska. Dang. RR
  8. I got Alaska covered this July. Only doing the Dalton up to the Arctic Circle though. Deadhorse just seems to be a BTDT type destination. Don't want to run 750-800 miles of gravel on the Venture just to get the T-Shirt. Did I mention that gravel and the Venture don't get along? (Or maybe they get along too well. The Venture likes to lay down with the gravel.) Now, if I took the KLR...... (but dang, that BB2k to get home would hurt). RR
  9. Yeah, that's what I did too. Although I bought the Venture (first bike ever). Couldn't believe how much extra cash I had around without her in the house. RR
  10. Or..... Just quit letting off the gas. RR
  11. Often times a carb sync will reduce or eliminate this problem. However, if there are leaks in the exhaust system, this can cause it also. Get together with another member here and have the carbs synced. There are several of us that have the tools and gauges to do it. Takes about 15 minutes and 6 beers. RR
  12. Maybe just one of us can go to Larry's. However, we will run a relay to get there. Buda-bing- cymbal crash. RR
  13. No, I am Jeff and I have a trailer. Your task is to determine the correct Jeff. Today, on 'What's my Line?' (If you're under 40, move along... nothing to see here...) RR
  14. For sport-touring, you may also want to check out the Yamaha FJR. For the money, the Connie is hard to beat. If you are looking for a serious mile muncher, the ST or FJR are really nice. You may also want to look at an older BMW. The R1150GS is a real workhorse. RR
  15. Wil, Sorry to hear this. Have been thinking about you periodically (whenever someone posts up looking for a repair/owners manual link) and haven't recalled seeing you post in here recently. I appears life got in the way. Keep your head up. It seems it never will end, but it does, and then it gets better. Don't have any need to expand the stable. Good luck in finding a buyer and getting thru this difficult time. RR
  16. Wow, I thought I was bad with 5. Stebel horn Ignition bypass Aux Fuseblock HID Headlight HID Aux Lights Hmmmm, what else can I add? RR
  17. You must remove the driver's seat to get to them. RR
  18. Let us know. This would be a possible good alternative to the $$$$$ Works shock. RR
  19. Inside and out Actually, this is a good time to double check the tightness of all the bolts. The bolts along the rear fender rail that support the trunk are susceptible as are the bolts up underneath the trunk. Blue loctite is your friend. Also, raising links if you are so inclined (pun intended). RR
  20. Wow, Eck. Does that connector look familiar - in all the melted glory. Have installed a bypass relay along with replacing the connector and have had several years and several thousand miles of trouble free starting. RR
  21. Had a similar problem hit my bike a couple of years ago. Under the tank, in the left wireway, there is a pink (or red) connector with two conductors. This goes from somewhere back at the battery box to the ignition switch. From looking at the repair manual wiring diagram, it appears the conductors are Red and Br/L (whatever L stands for). In the diagram, it is shown in the dotted box around the ignition switch. This connector had basically melted and was making intermittent connection. It finally failed in downtown Chicago at a gas station (not a good place to be). Easy to find once you pull your tank. Replaced it with a couple of spade terminals and it has ran fine for 30 or 40k miles since. Hope that is all this is. It is cheap and easy to fix once identified. RR
  22. Still warmer than your ride last year. RR
  23. SB, Assuming it is Shawnee, OK you are starting from, you should hit Kansas City about lunch time. I HIGHLY recommend stopping at Arthur Bryant's BBQ. There are two locations. Arthur Bryant's Barbeque · (816) 231-1123 1727 Brooklyn Ave · Kansas City Arthur Bryant's Barbeque · (816) 414-7474 3200 Ameristar Dr · Kansas City Their brisket is to die for. Travel safely. Clear skies and sunny thru Saturday up here. RR
  24. Steve, Thanks for the writeup. Great idea on the Ride Report section. RR
