  1. You still use cash? What, you need change for the payphone? RR
  2. IIRC, you cannot import "routes" from S&T to Garmin Basecamp (or Mapsource or directly to some Garmin GPSs). The file transfers waypoints and Basecamp constructs a route through them. While this distinction may not be important for most trips, S&T and Garmin may route on different roads. BTW, I really like S&Ts also. Do all my LD Rally routing on S&T and then export the waypoints to Basecamp for loading into the Garmin GPS. I route point to point rather than a complete route. Keep the PtoP listing on a card in the map window on my tank bag. This prevents the GPS route going out into the weeds if you want to take a detour to see something interesting. RR
  3. I have been using Smugmug as my photo/video sharing site. It was started by Baldy, the same guy that started/runs Advrider.com. IIRC, it is $60/year for essentially unlimited storage. There is a less expensive option for pictures only - no video. Smugmug maintains the original resolution, no clipping. Their site also makes it really easy to resize for posting in forums, social media, and/or emails. I think there are some codes to get 20% off for the first year. PM me for details if you are interested. No relationship with Smugmug other than a satisfied customer. RR
  4. It is a mile munching machine. One of the great sport touring bikes out there. Lots of aftermarket support. RR
  5. Jeff, Over the course of 11 days, 2 of which were non-riding days, I did 8322 miles. Will start working on a full ride report in the next couple of days. RR
  6. Welcome to the asylum. +1 on the crash bar support brackets from Carbon_One. Worth their weight in gold (well, at least their weight in beer). RR
  7. Go for a 1000 mile ride and it will balance out on its own. RR
  8. I think my identifier was JJ. Got home last night. Final tally - 35th out of 79. 5949 miles in the 6 days. Not great, but not bad. More later. RR
  9. Condor, BL is a multi day long distance scavenger hunt. My current plan is for abt 6200 miles over the next 6 days. The Spotwalla map shows everyone that is allowing their Spot to be shown. We are not allowed to publish our individual Spot tracks while the rally is ongoing. During an Iron Butt Rally some overzealous fan followed one of the riders by following his tracks. Ended up wrecking him. Long story, but individual identifiers are not allowed on maps published to social media. Day 2 about to start. Ahhhhh, sleep, glorious sleep. RR
  10. I passed tech inspection and all paperwork is in order (insurance and Medjet). Banquet followed by passing out the rally packs is tonight. Fun starts tomorrow morning. Time for a nap. Won't be much opportunity for excess sleep for the next week. RR
  11. ButtLite8 Rally launches Sunday morning at 8am CST and runs through 9 am CST on Saturday July 9. There is a SPOT tracking map displaying all riders route throughout the week. The identification markers are random for security/privacy, but you can get a feel as to where folks are going. BL8 Spotwalla Before the beginning of the rally, there is a password required to view. Once the rally starts, the password requirement will be lifted. Feel free to follow along. It should be a lot of fun. Wish me luck. Top ten get a no-draw pass into the 2017 Iron Butt Rally. I don't expect to get top 10, but you never know. Will tell the story of the ride in late July. RR
  12. This is a topic discussed in excruciating detail within the Iron Butt community. The motorcycle AC unit was/is tested by Paul Pellund who has MS. Excess heat effects him terribly. This unit allowed him to ride and attempt to complete his 1 Million mile challenge (story for another thread). It worked but had some issues. The general wisdom is to use evaporative cooling. I usually were long sleeve top and long tights in a dual layer wicking material (LD Comfort) as a base layer. Wet them thoroughly. Then put on my normal riding pants and jacket (FirstGear Kilimanjaro Jacket and overpants or FirstGear single piece riding suit) and CLOSE the vents. As I ride I put my sleeve (or leg) out into the airstream and fill the jacket (pants) with air. It creates quite the chilling effect. Good for about 1.5 hours per soaking. In extreme circumstances, ice is your friend. Half a bag of ice dropped down into your riding suit takes care of you for a while. The biggest issue though is dehydration. Riding all day in hot conditions will require almost a gallon of water. I have designed and installed a hydration system for my bike to use during Long Distance rallies. Wear a jacket, not mesh. Full helmet. Hydrate. RR
  13. Take the light bulb out and loosen the clamping nut in the housing. You can then adjust the targeting. Tighten back down and replace the bulb. RR

  15. Backed the Venture out of the garage so I could get the attic pull down ladder extended. Took out the clay pidgeon thrower and moved the Venture back in. Went shooting guns with my brother, my 2 boys, his boy, and an exchange student he is housing. The exchange student was quite amazed at the arsenal laid before him. 44 Mag 8" barrel Taurus revolver, Korean War era .308, couple of 22s, lots of shotguns of 12 and 20 gauge. We shot until we were out of ammo. We started with a lot of ammo. Good times were had by all. The exchange student will have a good story to tell back home (Norway). RR

    Clutch

+1 on the heavy duty springs. Took care of the issue with my clutch. RR
  17. Here you go. This should take care of the locking document box. Aerostich License Plate Locking Compartment
  18. I don't know. If my Venture is on a trailer, it's being stolen. RR
  19. Oh yeah, it sure is. When doing the title work, I did something I have never even thought of doing before. I declared the purchase price as MORE than I actually paid. Put down $2000 instead of the actual $500. The additional $75 in taxes are worth it to keep the gubment out of my hair. All told, we have a little under $900 in it ($500 purchase, $100 gas to go get it, $200 to title/plate, $100 battery). It's value is $3000+ all day, every day - not including the $1000+ in add-ons. A screaming deal. RR
  20. Just got my shipping notification. Should be here Friday for weekend installation. RR
  21. Update - As hoping to avoid - there were title issues. Apparently, in AZ the seller needs his signature notarized. (It still has an AZ title. The previous owner did not retitle it in NM when he moved). Son contacted PO and he is willing to do this, but is heading off to Peru (country) for a couple of months. Will need to wait until he gets back. HOWEVER, WI does not have this requirement. Signed (un-notarized) title was mailed up to me and the bike is now titled and plated in WI. Titled in the name RedRider -OR - RedRiderSon. That way, he can get it retitled in AZ by himself (or sell it) since it only needs one of our signatures to release. Therefore, the circle has closed and my son now has a perfectly running and legally titled/plated KLR for $500 (plus a couple hundred in tltle/plate/tax fees). It just took a couple of weeks longer than expected. RR
  22. It isn't made by Lucas by any chance? RR
  23. Let me check in the shop. I seem to recall I lost one and took the other off. If so, we can make a deal. RR
  24. Danaman, Use a 10 second delay-on relay instead of a standard relay. This allows you to start the bike without killing the HID. RR
