    Well, need to get some sleep. I suspect (and hope) tomorrow will be very busy. I will post some pics in the morning of how bad the tire is. I feel like such a dope. We calculated the mileage of this tire over dinner and I started the trip with about 9000 miles. When I went over the mileage in my head before leaving, I forgot a couple of trips - and a couple of thousand miles. Never again. Stupid hurts. RR

    Thanks all for the support and offer of the tire. Sorry the first gen wouldn't work. It would probably rotate too fast for my second gen anyway. I also checked the local yama dealers, and the HD dealer and they are all closed. If we are not able to locate a tire by morning, I may call the local Walmart and see if they have a car tire. I would likely have to do the mounting, but that's OK (or I would strap it on and limp to bongo's or freebird's. RR

    I noticed this evening my cord is showing in the center of my rear tire. About 1.5" wide and several inches long. It is an Avon with about 9000 miles and was intending to replace once I got home. Well, it didn't make it. I am in a hotel room in Erie, PA (it is Saturday night about 9:00). Does anybody close by have a rear tire - even a used Bridgestone will work - and can lend some assistance installing? I don't have a jack with me or the tools needed to remove the rear tire (I can do the labor if someone has the tools). Anybody available with a tire in the region - please call me at 920-602-0864. I am still mobile, but don't want to get stranded by risking 700 miles home on this tread. OK, I added a picture. What do you think of running 700 miles on this? 2000 RSV Thanks. RR - Jeff

    We are taking off today on an epic journey to Arcadia Nat'l Park. We will cross into Canada in Sarnia, travel up the St Lawrence Seaway, take the ferry to the US in Kingston, ride the Annarrondaks, the Green Mtns, the White Mtns (incl. Mt. Washington), and head across Maine to Bar Harbor, ME. Just me, a buddy, and my Dad. 9 days, 3600 miles. If ya see Big Red riding with a couple of Beemers, wave. RR

    Not yet. We are hoping the weather cooperates for us next week. It is looking kind of iffy. Watched some videos of MiniCoopers running up and down Mt. Washington and it looks ...umm... a little interesting. RR

    My guess is the timing chain. There is a spring that provides tension on the chain that is often weak or broken. Easy fix if this is what it is. RR

    We will need a lot more info to help you make this decision. First - how much riding experience does your Dad have? This is not a good bike for a noob rider (even though it is my first bike). Second - what kind of riding does he want to do? Pound around town, or tour. There are better selections for 'pound around town'. Third - (OK, this is going to raise some hackles) - Age? This bike is really heavy. Does he have the strength to handle this bike in slow speed handling and/or emergency moves. Forth - What does he want? Has he test ridden one? From a quality standpoint, the Venture is a great bike and an excellent value. You can't beat the comfort, looks, and warranty. You are a good son considering a bike for your Dad. My father started riding after I got my bike (and he realized my Mother still loved me after getting one). We take at least one major ride a year together and they are great memories. RR

    There has been a series of good reports about the EdSets. Search for the info. I believe there was a group buy being set up. I have installed the J&M and am satisfied. Stay away from Chatterbox. RR

    You made a great choice. I ride a 2000 (red - the fastest color) and have 54,000 miles. Done an Iron Butt and several multi-thousand mile trips (taking another next week - WooHoo!!). It is reliable, comfortable, and great looking. Chicks dig it (at least my wife does - that's what counts). It has sufficient power to ride 2 up and pull a trailer. Have had no major issues - clutch solenoid at 20k repaired under warranty, clutch, and ... umm ... just maintenance items (brakes, oil, lube, tires, etc.). They are pretty easy to wrench on and you have a great resource for help right here. We are also really good about directing you on how to spend your money on chrome and farkles (fun accessories, kool, likely expensive). Welcome to the family. RR

    I will advise, if your hands are big, put your bike up on a lift or get one of those cute kids (grandkids?) in your picture to reach up there. Turn your handle bars all the way to the right and reach up from the bottom of the fairing - by the plug outlet. It is a tight squeeze, but it can be done. Just takes less of a contourtionist if the bike is raise up a bit. Good luck.

    Twist the whole housing (that holds the bulb) CCW 90 degrees. It will then come right out. Do not touch the bulb at all. You shouldn't have any difficulty installing it without touching. Good luck. RR

    NOOOOOOO, don't change. I will be at the summit of Mt. Washington in 1 week and the summit of Cadillac Mtn the next day. Was looking to rock on this one. (There aren't too many mountains in WI). RR

    Does your bike have the pillowtop seats? If so, well .... you will either love them or hate them on a long trip. If you have the standard seat, you will hate them for a long trip. The Butler mod may help (likely would - may be a next winter deal for me). However, I would suggest looking at an Airhawk seat cushion. It is about $160 US (yup, it is expensive), but is extremely helpful keeping your butt alive after a couple of hours in the saddle. With it, I'm good for about 300 to 500 mi per day forever, 1000 mi per day for one day. Money well spent. Check out the International Venture Ralley being held in Kitchner. Would be a great opportunity to meet several of the members here to help direct the spending of your money on accessories and safety chrome.     I believe they are the sacrificial edging on foot boards. So when you scrape up your foot boards, you can just replace the feelers, not the whole boards. RR

    Skid, Every helmet seems to fit differently. I'm not sure where in WV you are, but if you can get to Columbus, OH, hit the Iron Pony (www.ironpony.com). They have a huge selection of helmets from cheap to expensive and most of the popular brands. It would give you and/or your wife an opportunity to try them on before dropping cash on something that will be used for several years. They are on the east side of Columbus and pretty easy to get to. Prices are reasonable and selection is the best I have ever seen. Ride Safely. RR

    We are readying for our annual long bike trip and was wondering if anyone has ridden to the top of Mount Washington in NH. If so, can you please let me know: 1) Is the road paved or gravel? 2) It appears the road is really narrow. Is it two way and, if so, how much difficulty is there with oncoming traffic? 3) Is it as steep as it appears by their vehicle requirements (must have L or 1 on auto transmission, no Lincoln Continentals prior to 1969, etc.). I'll run it no matter what. However, my 69 year old Dad on his BMW may be a little over cautious. Just curious about what we can expect. Thanks for your input. When we go, I will get the pic for the Scavanger Hunt. RR
