The City Council passed a no-smoking ordinance here in Fond du Lac. I have to admit, it is nice going into a bar and not coming out smelling of smoke. However, there already were non-smoking bars in town that CHOSE to be that way. If the City Council feels it is important, the council members can put up the money and open one. It isn't their job to be the nanny of the population. The bars we enjoyed going to at the outskirts are now a fog. The bars in town are dying. Rant Off RR

Reiny, Mathews has released the '09 HyperLight bows that weigh under 3.5 lbs. It is one of the compact designs that should work in a ground blind. I shoot an older Mathews Conquest Lite. Bought it used and have been pleased with it's performance and durability. I am limited in what I can shoot cause of a 32" pull. Therefore, I haven't shot one of the new bows, they only go to 30 or 30.5". Mine still kills, so I will probably stick with it (and it's paid for). RR

Welcome to the family. Because these bikes like to work hard and play hard, they occasionally like to take a nap. You have notice one of the things about the Venture is that is a bit top-heavy and not prone to being pushed backwards. Not too much you can do about it since the physics of a 900 lb bike are not just a good idea - they're the law. Bikes falling down is so common, this website receives a good portion of it funding from the 'Dropped the Bike' fine. If you drop your bike, you must donate $5 to this website and admit your embarassing moment. There are only two types of Venture riders. Those who have dropped their bikes, and those that will drop their bikes. I think I have covered all the bike dropping cliche's so far. Seriously though, yes, it is something you will learn to be aware of. You will learn where to park and how to get to it. Have your wife dismount on level ground before trying to back up the bike. No matter how petite your bride is, she will be adding 100+ pounds at a high center of gravity. At low speed, or a stop, that is destabilizing. Also, work on your low speed turning. This is a whole new discussion that has been thoroughly flogged in here. Try to find a spot you can pull thru to park. Or, go ahead and park heading up hill. That way, you can use the slope to roll your bike backwards before your wife gets on. Good luck, and ride (and park) safely. Again, welcome to the asylum. RR

Ask your shop if they will install tires purchased elsewhere. Most will for $25 or $30. If you have an idependent shop in town, they are good about it. www.swmototires.com seems to be the lowest prices around. They have a good selection, good service, and free shipping if you buy two tires. Good luck. RR -

The MityVac is great, but you may want to just work with a SpeedBleeder. They cost about $8. Speedbleeder.com. You will need to do a search on here for the correct p/n. While you are at it, get the bleeders for the front brakes (need 2) and rear brake. Get the bleeding bag along with them. It is money well spent. Now that I think about it, I should bleed mine this weekend. RR

The 2000 came standard with an 8 track. OK, just kidding. Yes, it has the cassette. There has not been any changes other than color and seats since '99 And Skyking - the 2000 Red is the best and fastest bike. Attached is my 2000 Red ready for a trip to Maine last summer. Sounds like a great deal with lots of miles left in it. I'm a little biased, but fair. Make sure to show pictures when you pick her up. RR

Bob, It isn't going to happen this weekend for me. Putting the wife and son #2 on a plane at 6:00 am Sat. sending them to watch spring training in Arizona. Then I am taking son #3 to Fort Wayne to visit the folks - in the truck. It will likely be April before I put the insurance back on and get the bike out. After that, would love to get together. RR

Saturday, I am putting my lovely wife and our 17 yo son on a plane to Phoenix. They are going to spend the week watching the Brewers and the Cubs in Spring Training. Wish I could go along, but some one has to stay here with the other 3 kids and the dogs - and to pay for the trip. I certainly don't think it will be needed, but is there someone out in the Phoenix area that would be willing to help if something goes wrong? Neither of them are 'professional' travelers, but they should be OK. I have programmed the airport, hotel, and all the ball parks onto the GPS they will be taking along. Again, I don't think they would need to call. But if something happens and we need some local info, will anyone volunteer to accept a phone call for help? Just trying to cover my bases (pun intended). RR

If it's the red one it has been ridden fast - since red is the fastest color. Seriously though, these are pretty solid bikes. They are also pretty easy to work on for maintenance items (clutch, rear shock - though expensive, brakes, fork seals are kind of a pain). Check to see if the key will fit all the locks. If it needs to be turned around (each side of the key is different), the main ignition switch has been replaced. Not neccessarily a deal breaker, but something to ask about. Is the guy selling it the original owner? I wouldn't be scared of the mileage if it has been well taken care of. Check his garage and see if it is neat and tidy. Kind of like checking a girlfriend's mother to see what she will be like in 25 years. If the garage is organized and tidy, the bike was probably maintained that way too. No guarantees, but a gut feel. Good luck and keep us informed. And if you buy it, we have a rule around here. Pics are required!! RR

FYI - The Iron Horse Lodge has camping, a bunkhouse, and cabins. The cabins are very nice (and relatively new) with 2 bedrooms sharing a bath. RR

www.Ironhorsenc.com This is a great place to stay, however, the night life is a little more country than city. In other words, bring your own beer/wine/liquor, sit around the campfire with the other riders and swap stories and lies. Beautiful area, quite babbling brook running thru the cabin area, big friendly lodge where all congragate, reasonably priced, and a nice meal at the end of the day. Only place I have gone to twice (actually, 3 times) since I started riding (other than family destinations). Check the www.Tailofthedragon.org website for additional information. You will have a great time down there. RR

The 2nd Gen RSV was technologically behind the GW even when introduced in '99. Unfortunately, I have to agree with Rider that there are really only 2 competitors in the GW class - the BMW and the HD. However, I prefer my RSV for comfort - I like the foot boards out front; style - most beautiful touring bike around; price, warranty, and serviceability - I can actually work on a RSV. It's a keeper. Perhaps Gen 3 will give the GW a run for its money. RR

Remove the plug and move it to the handlebar by the clutch side. You will find the cord to your helmet will no longer get hung up on your left jacket pocket / logo. Just attach the plug and cable with a couple of black zip ties. RR -

I received Rider in the mail yesterday and proceeded to screw up my sleep schedule and read it all. It is their 35 anniversary issue and they were listing the 35 bikes that were deemed most significant over the last 35 years. They weren't rated top to bottom, just listed by year. The Venture was selected #10 because of the year, not the importance. Also listed was the KLR650 and the Yamaha Virago. Nice to have 3 from the list. RR
