I did not buy any special tools, just drove them out using what I had. Just be aware that one side has a large internal snap ring that must be removed before removing the bearing on that side. It is easy to not see the snap ring if there is a lot of grime on the hub. :whistling: And then you'll feel like an idiot when you can't get that bearing to budge!

I had a 99 RSV, and the right rear wheel bearing went out at just under 50k. I'd be pulling it down and replacing them if I were you. Not that bad a job.

If I recall correctly, the clutch basket has a brass/bronze bushing pressed into it which acts as the bearing. Possibly yours may be badly worn, allowing the side-to-side movement. Hopefully you aren't seeing movement of the shaft it mounts on....that wouldn't be good I'm guessing! When I was trying to get rid of the horrendous chirp on my 99, I removed the stock basket and replaced it with an "I" basket. I noticed that the stock bushing had some wear, as the basket was able to be moved a small amount side-to-side. Upon installing the new I basket, there was virtually no movement. And, the new basket took out almost all of the chirp. Sadly, after a couple thousand miles the chirp started to return. My theory is that the wear on the new busing allowed some movement again, therefore the chirp. Just a theory.

Can you post a picture of the pin that you need? When I bought my bike I got a pin with it and don't need it. Previous owner pulled a Bushtec trailer but sold it separately. Not sure why he didn't include the pin with the trailer, but it is in my parts drawer. I'll never use it. If it is the one you need you can have it for the cost of shipping. Just post a pic so I can be sure it is the same as yours. Joe

I have a 1976 GL1000 sitting next to my 2003 GL1800. Just because you have an older one doesn't mean that you have "seen the light" and it's better than the newer one. Just means you are a MC junkie, like me!!

Warning.....the following is just my opinion. Don't get all bent out of shape over it. I don't think that Yamaha will make any design or tooling changes to the current RSV/RSTD engine that is directed toward eliminating the chirp or whine. No, it would NOT be expensive to do, but cost isn't the reason they've never fixed it. If they did a re-engineer to get rid of the aggravating noise, they would in effect be admitting that the noise is a defect. They will never do that, because then every current RSV/RSTD owner who has a whine or chirp would demand that their bike be fixed to correct this admitted defect. Of course, Yamaha would refuse to do that, as it would cost untold millions of $$ in warranty payments to dealers to make the corrections to existing bikes. Likely, someone would then file a class action lawsuit to force Yamaha to fix every existing bike with the whine. Even if Yamaha won the court battle, legal fees would again likely be in the millions. No way to win for Yammie. Therefore, I think that the only way the whine will ever be fixed is by the release of a totally new engine. It will have to be different enough from the current 1300 that no one can claim that Yamaha "fixed" a known problem. JMHO.

Since your title specified "computer guru", I'm going to address that situation assuming that if you had a Mac you'd say so. To most people the term computer = Windows PC. You can download free password recovery/reset tools and use those to fix the problem. Start here: http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm and I would recommend that you try the Stellar Phoenix Password Recovery tool. I have not used this particular one but I'm recommending it because of the simple format that they use. Personally, I use a Linux command line tool, but if you are not familiar with Linux or Windows system administration I would not recommend that. Ask questions if you have them and I will try to assist as I can. Joe

Personally, I LIKE the lines and the overall look. And, having sat on one (and soon to test ride one) I believe that if I were to buy a different bike it would be the CCT. I have owned 2 RSV's and 2 Goldwings (a 1500 and my current 1800). Just sitting on the CCT it just felt better. Lower, more balanced, etc. Of course, I am vertically challenged so that affects my decisions. Good luck on whatever you decide. Joe -

AHA!!! I missed the fact that you have a 1500 Wing. You're right, the seat is higher on the 1500 than on either the 1800 or the RSV. My 1500 was a bigger challenge for me than my current 1800. I really really wanted to come to Bill's, but the old 'job' thing got in the way. Unavoidable unless I wanted early retirement....way early and not affordable!! Joe

Hmmmm......Buddy, I don't quite understand. The RSV seat height is 29.5 inches according to Yamaha's specs. And my short legs seemed to confirm that this is very close to actual (on my 99). My 2003 Goldwing measures out almost exactly the same, depending on where my preload is set. Is it possible that you are running your preload at the max on your Wing, and that your RSV had a "tired" rear suspension? Or do you have a non-stock seat on your Wing that raises you up? I know that my 28" inseam is happier on the Wing than it was on the RSV. I seemed to have to tippy-toe more on the RSV. Joe
