clutch basket tool
FreezyRider replied to Bobcatpat's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Actually, I own the tool.....just went out and checked the toolbox and there it is. I had loaned it out and couldn't remember if I got it back. I'll loan it to you if you want to pay the shipping both ways. It would be shipping from/to zip code 46711, you can check and see what kind of costs you would be looking at.....it may be cheaper to buy your own. Joe -
clutch basket tool
FreezyRider replied to Bobcatpat's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I had heard that too.....tried it and failed miserably. Had a friend stand on the brake....still no joy. I then tried to rig up a home made thingamajiggy to hold it...and ended up breaking one of the studs out of the center of the inner boss. So, had to buy a new one. Guess which one costs more, a proper tool or a new clutch boss??? Get the tool. -

I think all years of the 1200 had the alternator issue. It was basically caused by a weak connector in the harness. It would slowly deteriorate causing the stator to eventually die. If caught early it could be corrected by removing the connector and soldering the wires instead. Many people have also put on an "exterior" car alternator kit, called the Poor Boy kit. No more alt problems. I personally think it is rather ugly, but it solves the problem without pulling the engine. There are write ups on some of the Goldwing forums about it. Most people I know who have/had the 1200 are pretty fanatic about them. The major issue other than the alternator is the shortage of parts and accessories. Just like on the 1st Gen Venture, it's getting harder and harder to find them. If I could buy one in nice shape for $1000 I'd be all over it. You could part it out and make a killing (if you were so inclined). Joe

Here is one thread on the gl1800riders.com forum about this problem. Couple of suggestions to try on that thread....good luck. Joe

This really doesn't surprise me all that much. When the Shinko first came out for the Goldwing 1500 there were many many reports of failures like this happening. I thought maybe they'd have it corrected by now, but evidently not.

email help
FreezyRider replied to royalstar09's topic in Computer help and tips for using this site.
You could configure Windows Mail to pull your web based email and then it would work. However, if you don't know someone who is computer saavy to help you with this, it may be easier for you to simply copy that craigslist email address and then open your web email and do as Mel suggested....paste it in and go from there. If you want to try to setup Windows Mail, here is a link to a tutorial: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Windows-Mail-setting-up-an-account-from-start-to-finish Joe -

F4 Customs Windshield Pics on a RSV
FreezyRider replied to rumboogy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I have the F4 on my Wing, it was on there when I bought it. I've admired the F4 for a long time before buying the Wing, just never wanted to spend the money. Having ridden one season with the F4, I will not hesitate to buy another if this one ever needs replacing. The clarity is stunning....water sheets right off as Wally says....bugs even clean off easier. And, if I feel like cleaning it with a dirty old squeegee at the gas station, I can do it and not worry about scratching it. One of the best products on the market for bikes, IMO. Joe -
That is awesome news, Dennis! Glad things are going your way on this! Joe

Looks like you gotta be "in the club" in order to get this privileged information. I must have deleted my club invitation or something, can't find it anywhere.

The driving factor in oil prices right now has very little to do with oil companies. SPECULATION is the boogy man here. Investors believe that the future price of oil will be more than it can be purchased for today, therefore they bid against each other to buy oil futures. Most of this activity is done not by wealthy individuals, but by fund managers and brokers. Are you investing in a mutual fund through your 401k or 403b? Then YOU are at fault (in a technical sense) for these price increases. Your fund managers are betting that they can make money for you (and for themselves too) by purchasing oil futures. The price is not set (other than a minimum, which doesn't fluctuate all that much) by the oil companies. But yeah, it's easy and popular to blame them. We all can "put a face" on the oil companies.....but the real trouble causers are the speculators. It ain't gonna get better anytime soon. Joe

How hard is it to change a rear fender?
FreezyRider replied to Midrsv's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Side bag removal is more time consuming than on the Venture, granted. But not all that difficult. The air filter replacement is a bugger, but again, more time consuming than complex. If you have access to the DVD series by Fred Harmon, maintenance on a Wing is not overwhelming. It's like anything else, it gets easier once you learn the tricks. But we ain't here to discuss Wing maintenance, are we? Good luck with your repairs, Dennis. Hope it all works out for you. Hey, just wait a couple months, and we can all join in on the repairs on your bike when we come for the Memorial weekend! Heck, in a couple hours on Friday evening we can have it all fixed up! -

Your rear wiring harness runs along the top inside of the fender. You have to remove the fasteners that hold the harness to the fender, unless you have very skinny hands and very long fingers (and I know that you don't) I don't think you can get to all the stuff you need to without removing the wheel. But hey, you can have that wheel off in a half hour or so. No biggie. -

For many things, you are correct that it is more involved to work on a Wing. But not for the rear wheel. I can have my rear wheel off in 7 minutes....and back on just as quickly. How long does it take to remove and reinstall the rear wheel on your Venture? -

Once the rear wheel is off the fender really isn't all that hard to remove. Had mine loose once, but not clear off and it wasn't that difficult. Removing the trunk is pretty straightforward also, at least it appears that way. Nothing like on a Wing....I'd hate to have to remove the trunk on my 1800. Good luck, Dennis. -
I've had that one for 4-5 years, no problem. Works great.

One of mine quit. Got in there, saw a wire dangling off the right speaker. Reconnected and all was well.

Don't know if you are aware of it or not, but the chrome ignition cover seems to be a bit larger than the stock one. When you turn the front end to full lock the cover will be contacted and "pushed" a bit to the side. Eventually it will crack.....at least the two that I had did. I eventually went back to the black stock piece. I actually like that look better anyway. Just want you to be forewarned. Nice looking bike!!!
