Well there are plenty of judgemental people around, regardless of the information you have. I have been riding sportsbikes on twisty roads for 35 years. Y'all only give yours names because you have so few of them. Try the coast road from Marseilles to Genoa! The Dragon is a road. Left of center is a "bend by bend" call, not a road. In that picture, the rider appears to have hit the apex of the previous bend, where he had a good view through the next bend. From the position of the bike he appears to be crossing back to the right well before the blind righ hander. Looks like good, spirited riding ... as I said, I wasn't there and it depends.

Trunk Light Bar Question...
twigg replied to OldGazer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If you have the amber left hand bit, I would be eternally grateful -
There is some pretty "holier than thou" stuff going on in this thread. First ... We do not have enough information to make a judgement. Not nearly enough. Yes he is on the wrong side of the road. So what? He is well short of that right hand bend and heading straight towards the apex ... he will cross the line way before anything coming the other way can reach him .... What is more ... If he is going fast he is even safer. He can see further around the bend than he could by staying right, and therefore would get more advance notice of potential problems. On the other hand, the faster he is going, the less time he has to react to various situations. It's a judgement call, his to make, and he made it. There is, however, nothing that is intrinsically dangerous just by crossing that line. It may not be lawful, but that is a completely different matter. It looks like he apexed the previous bend nicely, and from that position he has the best view of the road ahead. As for jail time for crossing a yellow line ..... ROFL!

Trunk Light Bar Question...
twigg replied to OldGazer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I'm thinking of swapping those nasty bulbs for LEDs ... But I'm struggling with the missing plastic bit. I've never seen a Yamaha Original reflector that fits there .... It has amber corners too doesn't it? It would probably be fairly easy to open one up and retro-fit the lights. -

replacing the ignition

Access is horrible. It is, though, quite easy to just swap out the upper section of the ignition switch, if that would help. -
Trunk Light Bar Question...
twigg replied to OldGazer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have one on mine which I haven't wired yet. The bulbs are push-ins. Mine was glued in too and I used a craft knife between the lens and the housing to separate them ... It took a while, but came out in the end. I am missing the left side amber cover, unfortunately. The light bar itself is an excellent idea ... mine is an "86 -
Thanks. I'll add the original starter wire to the ground side ... That would probably be the equivalent of 2 6-Gauge ground wires. I may need to cut and fit new lugs ... they need to be the same length although in practise it probably doesn't make too much difference if they vary slightly. I made the hot side from 4-gauge.

It hasn't, moved East that is. We are still early in the season. The storms tend to start out east then move back towards Texas and Oklahoma before hitting the Mid-West a few weeks later. We are in Oklahoma, so we have our shelter ready and our fingers crossed ... and our warmest feelings and condolences to those who suffered so much last night.
-
Thanks. Yes, I took that onboard. If I have to get the starter off, or buy a better one, I'll do that grounding ... Seems straightforward enough!
-
Did you just make the engine to battery ground bigger, or did you add a ground to the starter motor? I ask because I have the old starter cable, and it is long enough to double up on the engine to battery ground.
-
Test ride of 17 miles completed .... it's still doing it. So ... upgraded starter motor is probably the answer.
-
I decided on a wiring upgrade to see how much that helped ... I shall know later when I take a test ride. Here is the old starter wire, and the new one waiting to be cut to length and have the correct size lugs fitted: http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/1986%20Yamaha%20Venture%20Royale/IMG_0525.jpg This one shows what I found when I explored the main harness fuse. I despair of people sometimes!! Alongside it is the replacement: http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/1986%20Yamaha%20Venture%20Royale/IMG_0526.jpg And finally the new wires made up and ready to fit: http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/1986%20Yamaha%20Venture%20Royale/IMG_0527.jpg I might have to beef up the ground side too. I have cleaned it, so we shall see.

Thanks Mike and Gary. Very helpful. Cable replacement is already underway. While I am at it I'll replace the old Main Fuse with a modern equivalent ... Someone had already replaced the actual fuse with some 16 gauge wire .... They just get dumber! So two questions: Where would I get a 4 brush starter and can the starter be removed with the engine in the frame? I can see that the front exhausts need to come off, but is there sufficient room to pull the starter back and remove it? Oh, and are folk replacing the original Main Fuse with a 30 or 40 Amp? The original is 40, I think.

Intercom system

Be nice if all questions were this easy to answer. Full instructions for operating all the electronics are in the manual you can download from this site. -
Don't waste a cent on Monster Cables. For that distance, 14 gauge will be more wire than you need, and future proof. The cheap stuff is, in most cases, as good as the expensive ... even more so in your price range. If you had a 40ft x 20ft room, and were spending $50 000 on the project, the answer would be different

As to the Captivate .... you need to look up which Bluetooth protocols the phone supports, and you may need to pair it a few different times to get it working reliably.
-
lol ... nanny software.
-
It was the turning speed that was the issue. I'll upgrade the cables and check the ground first .... none of that is hard, and it can only help. Good to know that a 60k starter motor was looking fine inside, they look a ***** to remove.
-
Doesn't matter either way. Either he is on the wrong side of the road now, or he is about to be on the wrong side ... in a terrifying position!
-
lol ... It's an "86 Venture Royale. It will remain "thing" until it's behaving itself.
-
I'll do those first .... but I am suspicious of a 56k starter motor, and it's bushes. I was wondering how hard it is to remove. Oh, the solenoid in new, and fine.
-
This "thing" that I bought is very close to going on the road. Lot's has been done, including shimming the valves and new gaskets. Shout out to skydoc_17 here for the loan of the kit. The job is easy, for anyone considering it, even if access is tight. Now it doesn't leak oil or water ... both cured. I took it for a test ride this morning and there are issues: First .... The cruise control is behaving normally. All the lights are doing exactly as they are supposed to. Clutch switch is operating normally. The only problem is that the cruise won't engage. Second, and more important .... I rode about seven miles at various speeds up to 70mph. It drives well once warm. On the over run, and at starting, it still pops and backfires. Suggestions welcome. It also has a hot starting problem. When I got back I shut off the engine. I then tried to re-start it within a couple of minutes .... nuttin'. The starter motor tried to turn, turned slowly, not enough to fire. For all the world it sounded like a flat battery. However, the battery is fully charged, and charging well. I pushed it into the shop ... that front braking is still binding a bit (caliper is going to have to be cleaned). Twenty minutes later I went out, pushed the button and it started, first try, with no hesitating. I am leaning towards a starter motor issue .... Maybe that has to come off for a refurb .... Am I right and is it hard to do ... removing it, that is?

Yep. Bad decision-making can have terrible consequences. With respect to that picture we don't really have enough information. The guy has just hit the apex of one corner, and is heading for the apex of the next. He will be back over the line before anything coming the other way reaches him .... if he is going fast enough He may have got that wrong, it's hard to tell. However, the implication that it is never safe to cross those lines .... well if that is your view, you are on the side of the angels, no one will tell you you must break the law But it's a bit like saying that exceeding the posted speed limit is never safe.
-
Well now that is simply not always true. It may be in this case, that's another matter.
