Falling apart Piece by Piece
twigg replied to bostonlawman2003's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
It's clearly shedding bits in a vain attempt to keep up with the 1st Gens On a more serious note ... Don't ever let loctite get anywhere near ABS plastic, it eats it. It does up all good to go over a bike once a month checking that the fasteners are tight ... It can save a lot of tears. -
heh. It's about all you can do. Cars avoid the issue by using concave plastic covers for the cluster. If sunlight does fall directly on it, it is reduced by the curve to a very thin strip of light and the glare is minimal. I supposed a cover could be fashioned that would fit inside the housing, in front of the panel, but it's just easier to look at something else

Yes, it's bad, especially in winter. Nope, not fixed it. Look at the road instead

Considering the outrageous cost, I have yet to hear anything good about Corbin seats, apart from the fact that they look drop-dead gorgeous. When they make a seat that is comfortable for double that 450 miles, I'll consider them. Russell and Mayer both can, at a lower cost, and they don't look too shabby either.

Both teams have to do the Lower 48 .. all of them. Last I heard we were discussing whether or not to include Alaska ... If we do, then both teams will need to get it.

Fuel pump issue
twigg replied to Marcarl's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
This is your clue It should only work for "a few ticks". It runs for about 5 seconds, or long enough to bring the fuel system up to pressure. The second time you tried it the gas was at full pressure, so no ticks. Sounds like you disturbed a poor connection when you removed the windshield. Take it out, clean it up and add some di-electric grease to the terminals. Check all the grounds. -

Anybody Upgraded Their Front Brakes?
twigg replied to bongobobny's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
If you have tried it both ways, and are saying that it is infinitely preferable to change the MC for the 14mm, and it seems you are, then that is good enough for me. When I do mine, I will use the R1 MC. -
Muriatic Acid, as sold for swimming pools is 30% Hydrochloric Acid. Dilute it 50% and you have 15% HA. That is nasty stuff. Always add the acid to the water, never the other way round. Take extreme precautions because that stuff just loves flesh, and eyeballs!! I can see no reason why it would not work, the proprietory rust=eaters are based on phosphoric acid, probably because it is less corrosive. Go easy with the stuff, and don't leave it in the tank too long.

Anybody Upgraded Their Front Brakes?
twigg replied to bongobobny's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Every one else I have heard talk about this says that the standard master cylinder workd just fine. It's a pretty small difference anyway. Without doing some complicated math I suspect you would be hard put to tell the difference. Where it really becomes an issue is if you are changing to a set of calipers that require a BIGGER master ... If you don't change in that scenario you may run out of lever travel before the brakes are fully applied. All you can do then is try it and see. -
That was a decent price. Did you have to haggle much?

That was a "how long is a piece of string?" question with no definitive answer What we see on the dash is pretty meaningless, depending as it does on the accuracy of both the speedo and tacho, neither of which are great. Even were they perfect it would also depend on the actual rolling circumference of the front tyre. You can work out what it should be from the gear and final drive ratios, and an accurate speed but my question is why do ya want to know? Is it just a ballpark figure you are after?

The first rule of motorcycling is that the best bike is the one that fits YOU. So, go ride them both before you decide, this is not a casual purchase. Having said that .... The FJR gets the nod from the LD Community. They are well represented both in the entry lists and the winners podiums in most Rallies. That is not a poke at the Concours, just an observation. The guys that put in the hours in the saddle are voting for the FJR. Quite a few stick a car tyre on the rear too Having said that, there appears to be little wrong with the Concours, and it might just fit you better.

The HID Country kit is the one I originally installed before I changed to the Projector. It's straightforward .... The H4 female on the original harness plugs into the new wiring harness and controls High/Low beams. One heavy powerline from the battery or sub-panel carries the load, and the relay is powered by a ignition controlled positive (any will do, even the front running lights). There are three complications: 1. The CMU needs jumpers to prevent false warnings 2. The Reserve Lighting Unit MUST be bypassed, or it won't work. 3. The whole lot needs a separate OFF/ON switch. Without 3. there is a chance the low voltage protection in the ballast will cut in when the battery voltage drops as you hit the starter. If that happens it will need to be power-cycled to clear, and you are back where you started. The easy way to accomplish this is to mount a toggle switch that breaks the relay activation, not power, circuit. I put mine in the ground side simply because it was convenient. If you do it like this then the process is .... Turn on ignition, hit starter then turn on the lights from the switch. Sorted. The High/Low on the left switch will work as intended.

I was not offended. You made me think about what was a reasonable objective to set, and the discussion helps. So thanks

Did you do the RLU bypass? -
What a great list Some inventive and deeply troubled folk around here

Nearly all of the options mentioned in this thread lean more to the "touring" side of Sports/Touring. Indeed, they are all popular choices for the LD Riders, and some of them do starship mileages. If you want something that trends to a bit "sportier", without the cramp and backache that goes with the uncompromising riding position, I'd throw in the Honda VFR800 as a very solid choice. The FJR is very popular, and I certainly wouldn't turn one down. For a few years I owned its predecessor, the FJ1200A. Loved it, but it was definitely a "Gentlemans Tourer", albeit an extremely fast one!

Probably the most common is the Vista Cruise, available at any number of different prices from different suppliers: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/MOTORCYCLE-VISTA-CRUISE-CONTROL-UNIVERSAL/dp/B002EYZZSC]Amazon.com: MOTORCYCLE VISTA CRUISE CONTROL 7/8 INCH BAR UNIVERSAL FIT: Automotive@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41w2U358rCL.@@AMEPARAM@@41w2U358rCL[/ame] There are many others, all different and all having their own advantages. A Google search for "Motorcycle Throttle Lock" will turn up most of the options. ps .. I have the Vista on my Yamaha XS750, and it works just fine.

Looking at your sig map, Bob, it's fair to say that you must have crossed a good number of State lines in your time. Here is the last one I crossed ... Coming in to Oklahoma from New Mexico right up in the OK Panhandle. It's a quiet, two-lane with enough room to stop and have a leisurely lunch and probably not see another vehicle. Picture is a bit dark. http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/April%20Fools%20Rall/DSCN0376.jpg That was about two weeks ago.

Fair point. The biggest State, discounting Alaska for the moment, is Texas. Assuming you lived right in the very center of Texas then the farthest you could get from a State Line is about 250 miles. I would guess that about 99% of the population live rather closer to a State Line than that. How reasonable is it a condition, that everyone can get to every target posted in some undetermined time? I mean, there must be a few VR riders who live further than that from a Horse and Rider statue. Besides ... even a four hundred mile ride is less than my wife and I might do on a regular day trip. The last State sign I passed was nowhere near an Interstate. I'm sorry that you don't feel comfortable with this one, but another target will be along in a few days Maybe I missed the point of this game, but it seems to me that it should lead to an interesting ride for someone.
-
Okay .... The next objective is a picture of You and Your Bike next to any "Welcome to "Insert State here" sign". Some States simply have the State name on some kind of structure ... For example, the name "Oklahoma" on a carved granite slab as you cross the State Line ... That would be fine. That acceptable?

Methinks a few folk are feeling a tad defensive. Please read back ... I did not call anyone stupid or idiotic. I described the act of riding a motorcycle without a crash helmet, as both. However, most of my ire is and was directed not against people here, but against a State Legislature that abandoned it's responsibility for the safety of it's citizens, by rolling back important legislation. Yes, I believe that riding a motorcycle without head protection is both stupid and idiotic, however, if you feel it more civil I would happily exchange those pejorative terms for "grossly irresponsible". Defending such actions as part of our "Freedoms" is simply nonsensical. Clearly you are free to choose, in a State that allows such choices, but it isn't an exercise of "Freedom". Freedoms are fought for, and died for. Irresponsible behaviour should not be equated to this. I said nothing to all the folk who had previously declared that they made a personal choice to willingly put themselves in danger of death, or more severe injury. They make that choice, it's a matter for them. However, it is also a fact (like it or not), that extended hospital stays, and years of rehab are not paid for just by your insurance premiums, they are paid for by us all, and I am perfectly entitled to point that out without the sarcastic reply which has drawn no comment and must be, therefore, be your definition of "civil". It's not mine. As I said before ... Talk among yourselves. I expressed a view, and I am done with this subject now
