Speedometer Question
DANJ replied to DANJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Wow!! Never even hear of such a contraption let alone knowing what to do with it. Likley real good advice to replace. Thanks Bob. I really appreciate the offer Dave. The speedo seems to work normally up to the 75mph mark so not a very big inconvenience. The oddometer has quite a little bit discoloration so I'll likley just keep lookin' for an assembly with similar miles on it until this one gives out altogether. If this one goes altogether, I probably wont be so pickey about the mileage. Thanks again fellers, DJ -
Went out for a ride Saturday with my son on his new VTX1300. After about 50 miles, he wanted to trade rides for a bit. He had noticed his VTX had a hard time keeping up with my 93, and immediately got on the throttle. I couldn't catch him on a nice long straight and have no idea how fast he was going but the Honda was showing over 100. We met at a little "greasy spoon" had a some lunch and headed for the Interstate. As we pulled off the on ramp I accelerated quickly and found that my speedo would stop at 75. I know it had been working because I had it over 100 on several occasions. We crusied at about 80 for the next 50+ miles (according to his speedo) but mine would not exceed 75. Anybody got a clue on this one? Doesn't seem possible!

Nice low rumble at idle. Louder and lower sound through the gears. Bark a little when you get on the throttle hard. Relatively simple to install. You need longer mount bolts and a few washers as spacers. Make sure you have new gaskets before you begin. See my photo gallery for photos of mine. DJ -

Just a little testamonial from a feller that was lucky enough to pick up a set. Got about 800 miles on mine and they look great and sound SWEET. DJ -
On my ninety three doesn't look like anything has ever been bolted up there. Mystery solved for me. In photo #2 it shows the helmet locks bolted to the tabs on my bike. I really like those kids boards. will have to keep an eye out for them. Now all I need are some helmet locks. Thanks Jack, DJ

On my 93, there are tabs on the front outside corners of the bag guards. Does anybody know what they designed for? Thanks, DJ

Some years back, a feller I knew built a kind of chopper trike out of an 85 Maxim. It was more or less a bare bones kinda thing with a little pick-up bed. Id was cute. He used the rear differential from a Suzuki Samari I think. Said the banjo off-set was right. DJ

YOU GOT THAT RIGHT GEORGE!! I'm taking the mindset that first 6 months or 60 years doesn't matter. The one that gets you is the one you didn't see, and if you didn't see it you weren't looking. Like they taught in the BRC SEE (search, evaluate and execute) Worked for me once. Hope it will work the next time. DJ

One of our instructors related to an incident very similar to mine (obviously different from yours). He had been the investigator in the resulting crash. The cycleist told him that he didn't have any choice but to hit the other vehicle broadside (the interview took place in the hospital). He told us that you always have a choice if you have enough training and experience. You may not be able to avoid the crash, but you do have a choice to possibly lessen the severity. It sounds like you were able to prove his point and survive. I'm very glad for that. DJ

I'm sure convinced!!! As far as the seat is concerned, I think it has a permanent lengthwise crease and it took about an hour for my cheeks to relax enough to get my drawers back where they belonged. :shock3: DJ

You said it Buddy! Although, if I'da had time to hit the horn, I'd probably had time to stop, in which case I likley would have yanked that feller outta his truck and slapped him. Just gratefull now, and the more I think about it the more gratefull I get! DJ

I'll try to keep this short. After completing the MSF BRC (basic rider course) and getting my M endorsement on my license, Saturday was my first time out completely legal. Between all the local construction and traffic congestion, getting out of town was a real Bi*#&. Finally out on the road had a Grand ride of about 200 miles. All the riding tricks I'd learned in the BRC worked fantastic. (keep it short) OK, I stopped at the Dairy, and headed to the store to get groceries for supper. At a main intersection, having gone east through the semi-fore I spotted a 1Ton Chev PU waiting to cross both of my lanes to turn westbound. (cell up to his left ear) I had accelerated to approximately 30mph and watched this fellow very closley. Sure enough, he pulled out into both lanes and was stopped by westbound traffic in front of him. (remember SEE) I had about 100ft to maneuver. Hit both binders. Not enough room to stop. (remember seperate braking and swerve) Released the binders, HARD "Push/Push". Cleared his rear bumper by inches!!! After dealing for a few monents with the "Pucker Factor" I realized that had I not taken the BRC, I likley would have continued attempting to brake, and would almost certainly have hit that "Knuckle Head". Think about it, especially new riders. I believe the BRC has already saved me alot of trouble. BTW, who did I pass southbound between Murcer and Sunshine on a Brown VR 2UP? Thanks for letting me rant. DJ

I just finished the MSF BRC this Saturday past. I found it very enlitening and useful. I have no problem making it mandatory for under 18 and mabey 21. Very good idea if your past experience is dirt or off-road. DJ

The 6180s were not real tight on the left bar, but the layer of grip tape seemed make them fit tight enough. Let them cure for about 12 hours at 70deg and seems to work very well. DJ -

George, I used the Kuryakyn 6180s with the Throttle Boss. I really like them, and the Throttle Boss really allows you to relax your grip. I used golf club grip tape to install, and it worked well. DJ -
I haven't studied the ERC, but took the first half of the BRC last Saturday. Frankly, I took the course for two reasons. One is that I want my wife to ride with me and I figgered that would help with her confidence. Two was that completion of the course satified the driving test requirement. My experience riding is mainly dirt. MOTO, Desert racing, and Trials. Mabey 10,000 miles road on Enduro style bikes and 2 small Road bikes. I won't go into any details as most of you likley know all about it, but I highly recommend it to anyone with little road experience. I am sure glad I am taking it. I honestly didn't think they were going to teach me anything about riding, didn't tak'em long to prove me TOTALY wrong!! DJ

Thanks Boomer, She's coming along niceley. Sure getting anxious to ride.

It's Saturday and I decided to install some more goodies. Had ISO grips, ISO pegs and my new bell ( a present from my son) Started with the grips. They came off slick ( thought this is gonna be too easy LOL) After thorough cleaning, applied industrial strength professional super mega hold hair spray. After 2hour wait, grips were still sliding off from gravity. Cleaned everything up again. Read Kuryakyn instructions again. Installed throttle side as per instructions. Won't ever do that again!!! Minor defect in throttle side will have to live with until I put some new ones on. Went back to my gut and headed to the golf store and got some grip tape. Worked super slick. Took about 3 hours to cure. Everything else went as per plan. Check it out.
