I had an 84 Wing prior to my 83 Venture, the Wing was trouble free the entire time I owned it, nothing but tires, brake pads, but I never really liked it even though it did everything pretty well. The Venture has also been been fairly trouble free although lately at 89,000 it's needed a few things and they do have some issues as others have mentioned. Watch out for the stator on the Wing, I never had to replace but it is very expensive to have done, over $1000, also timing belts, as they will destroy motor if they break. I had the Wing for 3 years and have had the Venture for 9 so that shows my preference.

When I changed mine, the source for diaphragms only wasn't available so I ended up with the factory slide diaphragm minus new needle. What they sell doesn't work for 83's as the lg. spring won't fit into the slide well so I had to get the later springs which are a smaller diameter and clear the small step inside the new slides. Anyway all this did change the power characteristics and the mileage of my 83, more or less what you noted, had more low end before and actually better mileage as long as I drove moderately. I think this may be due to the different springs as the original lg. diameters seem to be a lot softer than the later springs and probably allowed the needles to start opening at lower rpm??

I had an 84 wing for a number of years before I sold it and got my 83 venture. The wing was a good bike, never really had anything go wrong other than normal tires, brake pads, that being said I never really cared for it. The venture has had it's share of well known issues but at the end of the day I still prefer it, handles better, way faster and even better mileage if ridden gently. Watch out for the alternator on early wings as an earlier post mentioned, the motor has to be pulled to change, very expensive.

Seems to lack the "oomph" it had...
Oldgold replied to CdnDave77's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
After reading this thread I checked the vacuum on my 83, low and behold no vacuum at any rpm. Several squirts of carb cleaner and a poke with a small pin opened it up, lots of vacuum and definitely more "oomph" -
I really hate Carburetors!
Oldgold replied to Squidley's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I ran into this on my Suzuki, don't know if Venture uses this or not but anyway the needle seat on the Suzuki has an "O" ring where it presses into the carb body, these deteriorate over time and will allow gas to seep into the float chamber bypassing the needle valve. Another possibility is the float from that carb has lost some of its bouyancy, allowing more gas into chamber before exerting enough force to finally close off the needle valve. I hate carbs too, just had mine off the 83 Venture for cleaning. -
Tim, from the 83 manual, they show: #1 Orange, #2 Gray, #3 Yellow, #4 White I hope that's correct, I seem to remember that there are numerous errors in the manual, hopefully someone else will jump in if this is not correct.

2nd gear question
Oldgold replied to mikexup's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I've got 85,000 on my 83, never had it pop out of 2cd gear, 2cd owner , don't hit 2cd hard often, but don't really baby it either, hopefully I haven't jinxed myself. -
Messing with the carbs
Oldgold replied to CrazyHorse's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
After many phone calls, e-mails and trips to two dealers it seems that the diaphragms they're showing for an 83 won't accept the original 83 springs, they're just a hair bigger than the later models, I found out that if you buy the diaphragm kit, they include the later springs which fit properly. The tech at the 1 dealer I went to was aware of the problem and was able to get me 4 used ones. Thanks to all for responses. They don't sell the 83 diaphragms any more so you get the later version with the step and must use the later springs. I haven't been able to ride that much since the change so I don't have a real good feel for what it's done to mileage and my clutch is too weak for a real performance check. -
Carb diaphragm springs

Here's one I hope someone's run into, just got 4 new carb diaphragms for the 83, changed over the needles and low and behold the diaphragm springs will not go to the bottom of the plastic barrel, goes in fine about an inch, then hits a lip. Waiting for Zanotti to call back to see if they have any insight, can't believe this is right as the springs fit fine in the originals, part # is 41r-14940-00-00.

Boost sensor vacuum restrictor
Oldgold replied to CptKirk's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Lots of good suggestions, the sooty plugs certainly point towards too much fuel or too little air, if the choke fuel enrichners aren't the culprit take a look at the condition of the main diaphragm needles and seats, I'm assuming the new bike never gave you good mileage, previous owner may have modified main jets, needles, springs, since you were getting better mileage at lower speeds you would have been running on the pilot fuel circuit, once you get up around 3,000 rpm the diaphragms are starting to lift the main needles and that really lets the fuel in. -
What gas mileage do you get ?
Oldgold replied to greg_in_london's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hi Greg, the article was for XVZ1200 TK, it was on this site at one time. I got my 83 TK when it had about 8000 miles on it and it more or less did what the article mentioned, I've got 78,000 on it now and have gone through most of the well documented issues, the worst mileage I've ever had was when i synched carbs with a leaking diaphragm, this threw everything off and resulted in a large drop in mileage, once the diaphragm was repaired and carbs resynched mileage went back to normal. -

Just reread the Cycle Magazine test of the Venture from 1983, they got an average of 42.6. Their high was 47.4 sedate highway cruising, 44-45.3 cruising 65-70, 2 up and a low of 36.7 riding against high winds on mountain roads. My 83 probably was close to these numbers when new as near as I can remember, but at 78,000 it's probably down 2 mpg from all these numbers. It does illustrate what different conditions can do to fuel mileage and of course it's hard to get an exact mileage check unless you're able to go back to the same pump and fill to exactly the same level. -

My 83 when new 46-42, now 43-38 at 78,000. By comparison my 82 GS1100g with 98,000 still gets 54 with light driving, dropping to 47 with chasing through the corners hard, my old 84 Goldwing got 42-43 no matter how I drove it.The 83 has 1 bad diaphragm and 1 cyl leaking gas from the needle tube at idle even though the float level is correct and steady, going to dig into soon in search of lost MPG -

Lost gas mileage
Oldgold replied to Oldgold's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks to all for suggestions. Yes, I did check float levels. Front tire is actually down to the last few thousand miles. I'm looking at the pistons at idle, filter removed, all pistons will dance, when I first noticed this I thought the fuel was coming out of the main jet but it's definitely coming out of the bottom of that piston. The old YICS is still hooked up, if it stops raining I'll try unhooking it and see if that has any impact, the only other thing that comes to mind is leaky intake valve, if that allowed some compression to leak back into intake passage at idle, pressurizing ports under throttle plate?? Just rambling on here, if I find anything I'll post. On another note, I just replaced a rear Dunlop E2 with an E3, seems to handle and ride a bit better. The E2 rear gave me the best mileage I've ever had out of a rear tire, but never really felt as planted as some of the other tires I've had on the bike. -
Lost gas mileage
Oldgold replied to Oldgold's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I know there's quite a variation in gas mileage on some of these bikes, but I've had this for years and it's always been more in mid to high 40's. The gas is spraying from the diaphragm piston side into the carb throat as if the diaphragm cover side was getting gas into the chamber and mildly pressurized. -
While searching for causes for mileage being down from ~ 45-46 to 40-42 I noticed gas weakly spraying from the bottom port of #3 Vacuum piston at idle, the diaphragm has no visible tears and the float level is correct, the only ports that appear to go to the cover side of the diaphragm seem to be the purge jets. Any ideas what's happening here? Carbs are synched and compression is within 5# on all cyl. Thanks

Help !! Lost a Cylinder.
Oldgold replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If this were my 83 with the same problem I'd plug the LF wire into an old plug and ground the electrode, start motor and watch to see if the spark was jumping the gap, nice blue spark would be best, this should eliminate the electrical side of not firing. If this looks OK, I'd check fuel level, on an 83 they run drain hoses from the bottom of each carb to which you need to add a short piece of 1/8" clear tubing from the hardware store, again on the 83 the level is supposed to be about .55" below the center of the carb diaphragm cover, there's a small screw at the carb base to open and let the fuel into the hose hold the clear tubing up along the diaphragm cover and see if you're close, now you know you're getting fuel into carb,if this is OK pull air filter and watch the diaphragm slide for that cylinder while operating the throttle, all 4 should be dancing up and down the same, if all this checks and it's still not firing I' be thinking along clogged jets,or fuel passages in that carb. Did they diassemble and clean the carbs when they did the diaphragms? Just a few things to look at, I would imagine the techs have already done most if not all the above. I don't know if the float level check applies to your year or not, I'm sure someone will jump in if it does't. -
Mine was welded when I bought it, had less than 10,000 miles at the time and yes it has heel / toe shifter. Currently at 76,000, never had a problem since buit the original owner had told me when I bought it.

If it's the same as an 83 it can be done, but it's really tight. I just had mine off and after popping out of the doughnuts tilt the right side carbs to about 45 deg and start to work out from the left side, the #2 carb tends to get hung up on it's doughnut and I pushed it from the right side till it cleared. You should be able to unhook the remaining cable at this point, make sure you set the cable adjusters for max. slack as the cables are also a bit hard to get to. It's a wrestling match, maybe one of the other guys has a better description of the removal process.

Boost sensor restrictor-83 Venture
Oldgold replied to Oldgold's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks for the quick response, my 83 had about 9000 miles on it when I got it years ago and I was never able to locate a restrictor. As Denden notes the 83's take off above the throttle plate so perhaps this location provided enough of a restriction since the vacuum would be much lower than later models which draw manifold vacuum. I did a test splice in line with a .007 HVAC restrictor and was able to see voltage change on a digital meter, test ride showed some difference in throttle response, nothing dramatic. -
It's the electronic vacuum advance signal to the ignition computer.
