Sorry Dragon, forgot to reply. Mine came with a 10" smoked glass which i haven't even bothered with...i used it as a template and made a cut down version which turned out to be just shy of 7" tall. I like the looks, but wind hit's me right in the eyes. So...i think the 10" glass would be perfect...i need to try it out. as for buffeting...it does a little, but not that bad. I find that the wings tend to "flap"/vibrate from time to time, but again...not bad enough to take it off. Turbulence, no worse than the plain glass shield that the batwing is replacing. All in all, i'm glad i spent the money on it...it's been a good project and i'm happy with the out come. later

Good Question...Actually I gave it to the guy that did the finish work on the paint and the one that did the painting too. The initial guess-tamations came in around $300 for the paint. This shop did it for $125 and it looked great. Now that it's been rubbed out, it looks even better...and for that, I bought them lunch. Seemed like the right thing to do. "Paint the mounting hardware black": Excellent idea, i think i will. As for gauges, radios and or a dashboard...i think i'll pass. I think i'm more of a purist in that regard. Less is better; keep it simple, etc. Again, thanks to all for your thoughts and suggestions. Ron

Can't wait to see it... Who would have guessed. it's a SUNNY morning in the Pacific NW. Guess who's going for a ride, after the soccer game, the mower is serviced and the lawn is mowed, the jeep is washed and the jungle is wacked back a couple of feet... Thanks all...

Yeah...it's the pics. actually i have about a 1/4" on top and less than an 1/8" on the sides (almost too close for me)...AND, I left my little head light visor on too...that might be what you are seen. I could move the fairing forward, but then i think i would look odd. i would however like to move in back, but then the lower wings would be touching the fairing...it's more or less where it has to be. As for tunes...I've gone the rebel way, Ipod/Ijet with ear buds. that way when i don't have the music going, I get the benefit of semi-ear plugs. As for the inner void...I was thinking stuffing a tool pouch of some sort in it or in front of the hole at the very least. Thanks again for the positive feed back. Nothing but love baby and summer is approaching...even though we had a small snow shower today! Later:)

Hello all and as promised, I have returned with more pics of the 'finished' product. I'm pretty darn happy with the way she turned out. The paint looks really good and the final mounts are working out well too. And most importantly...I'm still well under budget: Fairing (ebay) $300+$45 shipping Aluminum Angle-Iron $35 (had to buy 8ft) Misc nuts and bolts $10 Paint $125 + two 12"Subs - decided to go with one color to keep things simple. As before...so what do ya all think (and please be gentle) Sorry about all the picture, thought more was better in this case...And, the "full size" links are generally 1.5meg images. I see that you're from WA. If you like and can find your way down to Portland, check out Beaverton Honda...LOTs of, and mean LOTS of riding apparel. They stock TourMaster and other brands. Very cool store. let me see... http://www.beavertonmotorcycles.com/ If you've never been there, you should. it would make a nice day trip. Inside the store, there are hundreds of vintage bikes [Yes, including an Orange 1975 RD350: Ode to the two stroke!] displayed on this huge wall-shelf that encompasses the whole display room...very very cool! later.

Yeah, i like it, but ... I do think that it is rather long for me (being all of 5'6"). Lots of arm and shoulder adjustments. It can be a little on the warm side in the 90 plus degree range, but what isn't. Just went for a ride the other day 40 - 50 degrees with the liners, plenty warm. I'm sure even the mid-30's would be ok. I do have the matching pants too. they are just as warm with the liners, but they are more like ski-pants, kinda "puffy". ONE down side...too much velcro. at times it tends to ball up if you're not careful. If I remember right i paid less than $150 last summer from http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/ ...now it's $166 w/free shipping. The pants were even cheaper at the time, but my short-and-round size was hard to find...DennisKirk'd those. If you are of my size i would suggest checking out the tourmaster 'Pivot' first. My friend has it and if i remember correctly, it's a little shorter in length more or less identical other than that. But all in all I like the coat/pant combo and would definitely recommend either or, but regardless, i would definitley recommend the TourMaster brand. good luck

Air boxes ????????
rjmalizia replied to Silver Bullet's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
This is what i've done. i modified the air box such that i enlarged the intake hole, but no bigger than that of the air filter intake (NOT THE BIG FOOT METHOD), removed the airbox air dam and replaced the oem filter with a K&N. Verdict: I really can't say that it made any difference. Ron -
Avons! [WWW] had both the dunlap and Metzlers. the Avons seem to handle the corners better than the others, not as much wobble. NOTE: even though the rear tire is stamped as to be the stock size, mine was a bear to get on and actually a little wider. good luck Ron

Mariner Fan: Yes, some do. This one though does not have the inner shell. I wanted to keep it as simple as possible and i figured i would have an even tougher time mounting that type of fairing. And on the up side, between the fairing and the headlight there appears to be plenty of room for some sort of glove box. I'm figuring that i can hide a windshield bag in that space and call it good. Sounds like a good 'New' tradition to me. I'll just have to where a snorkle. lol

Abby-Normal: Yeah that's what i'm thinking [i like it]. I'm just not sure how i want the second color laid out...and is it Black on the cream(white) or cream on Black? Monsta: You know i thought about it, but i keep coming back to the fact that i just don't like the RSVR fairing. It's too round...or something. I can't really put a fingure on it other than i just don't care for it. Radio, would be nice. i run with an Ipod/Ijet setup; works pretty good for me. I was looking at a Wide Open Custom fairing. I mean "looking" as in ready to put out the $799 for the non-painted, radio equipped fairing. It's made out of plastic rather than the fiberglass that i ended up with. don't know if it makes that much of a difference and i'm only in it for $380+/- so far (includes shipping, metal, misc nuts and bolts) I haven't heard how much the paints going to run me yet [i'm too chicken to spray it myself]. many thanks Ron

Hello all, Sorry it's been awhile since I've checked in. Between the Weather out here [WA] and the Holidays in general...well, I've been just down right busy. anyway, here's my winter project for Trigger. I was able to pick up the Harley batwing fairing off of ebay. it did come with some nice mounts, but unfortunately and evidently, the Heritage and the RS forks are not quite set up the same...so I went about creating my own. I started off by making a cardboard template, which i then transfered to wood. This worked out pretty good actually, the 1/4" plywood is soft enough and easy enough to work with, yet strong enough to hold the fairing. Once i got the wood templates aligned to my liking, i then used them, to create the soon to be perminate mounts out of aluminum angle iron. The harder part is going to be in the finializing of the lower fairing mounts. I was able to bend up a couple of pieces of scrap aluminum flat bar...but it's just not all that pretty. Which brings me to the latter steps of "paint". All black or two tone to match Trigger's current color scheme. As always any thought and suggests would be greatly appreciated. OH...one more thing. [As i climb onto my soap box] This is absolutely, the best place for "free" help and information in regards to our two wheeled loved ones. Please consider making a small donation to this site. I know it's appreciated by those that run it and those of us that use it. Thx Ron. and now for the pix.... http://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081121-001sm.jpghttp://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081121-002sm.jpg http://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081121-013sm.jpg http://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081121-020sm.jpg http://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081121-022sm.jpg http://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081130-Front.jpg http://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081130-Mount.jpg http://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081204-Left.jpg

I ended up buying the Sears ATV lift. if i remember correctly, it was only about $60. i then had a friend weld me up an adapter based on the plans that i found, somewhere on this site. (sorry don't remember just where though) good luck.

Not to resurrect an old thread here, but well, that's exactly what I intend to do. Just purchased my fairing off of ebay. should have it in a week or so. Once i get it mounted, I'll post the pics. I'm hoping my biggest issue at hand will be the color scheme. Black with the matching off white or good old solid Ford Black. any thoughts or suggestion?

ME! I am an idiot! and yes you may quote me...but please be gentle. Well if i knew how to use my meter correctly it would have told me that i was only drawing a few milli-amps as normal. I borrowed a third meter to test on another bike only to make BIG SPARKS on the battery. Thought i had the testers in the correct meter holes, black-common, Red-A10...spark spark spark...not good. Got me thinking though. Ran home and grabbed my meter. Guess what and the tester leads in the wrong hole...had the red lead in the milli-amp hole, NOT the 10A hole. Freaking meter...perhaps i should read the instructions...you think. Well in the booklet, the magic sentence says..."press and hold the ac/dc button until the display says 'dc'." With that done and the testers in the correct holes, the meter now correctly (so i hope) is telling me that there are only 0.02 amps being drawn. Actually now that i think of it...the meter was right before too! I had it dialed to 10A but the testers were plugged into the mA hole and it was telling me 1.80 MILLI-AMPS! DOH! I am such an idiot! Sorry to waste everyone's time, especially you GeorgeS. Thanks for the help all.

I just pulled the tank and didn't see anything...however with the tank wiring disconnected and the fuse back in...the draw has disappeared (down to a few milli-amps). it has to be in the instrument panel or the fuel reading/sending unit.
-
yeah...giggle. 1 month replacement and then a 6 month prorated replacement cost. Joke i know. But just the same, i've had at least two other "wal-mart" batteries and they have held up just fine. I'm more worried that i have bigger issues here.
-
well i just performed the same test on my brother's harley, and well, it had a similar 2 amp draw with the ignition off. I'm starting to think that my $20 sears volt meter is only worth $10.
-
hey thanks all and thanks GeorgeS...I'll check that connection, as soon as i'm able to find it. one more observation: just now I went to put the battery in. hooked up the negative lead and then placed my meter between the positive terminal and the positive lead...surprisingly, my meter read a 2.1 amp draw. Is that correct? I pulled all 5 fuses one at a time until i got to the last one, a 5 amp fuse for "Back Up" [The wife always said i should have a backup beeper installed:buttkick:]. Anyway...is this normal? or should i start looking for that short. AND what the heck is the "back up" for? All i could find a reference for was the instrument lighting...is that all? Again thanks to all. I guess I'll pull the tank. Ron

Riddle me this batman: is it the battery or an electrical short somewhere? Well kids, life's been good...haven't ridden the bike in a couple days until yesterday, noon. hopped on Trigger, turned on the ignition, head lights turned on, neutral lit up green, hit the start button, the engine rolled over for a few seconds, but no start. So I hit the start button again, but this time, the engine barely turned and the lights went out. Oh #$%^! Must have blow a fuse. well needless to say the fuses are all good, but the ignition is dead. So I walked away from her for an hour or so, came back and now the lights once again work so i hit the start button only to hear...tick tick tick tick followed by the familiar power death. It sounded like what i believe to be the solenoid ticking? Checking the battery, my meter stated that it had 12.8 volts with 3.8 amps...for what it's worth. Next i pulled the battery and let it charge for a hour and gave it another try...same results. Followed by the "well let's try jump starting it" which worked! ... but, i noticed that the green neutral light (as well as the headlight) was flickering. I didn't like that so i shut her down. and finally, I got little Bro to cough up the battery out of his bike and Mikey Moused it into mine...hit the button and VROOM VROOM! it's alive, it's alive it tell you! Trigger was purring along like nothing ever happened. Lights were stable and bright and the engine was idling nicely. So off to Wal-mart i go and can you believe it. Of the 6 or so batteries on the shelf, one was exactly what i needed...though it set me back $78 bucks, i was still rather happy. Unfortunately though, the new battery required an initial charge, so I'll have to do my [hopefully] final test in the morning [soon]. Now with that said, here are my observations: 1. if it was the battery, which i truly hope to be the case, it never showed any signs or symptoms of the impending doom. Lighting didn't change with engine speed, the starter didn't appear to drag or lug while starting, etc. Just BOOM, dead in the water. Another note, which i find rather hard to believe, is that the battery is a Yuasa brand. Which leads me to believe that it may be the original battery. That would be an 11 year old battery with 19K of miles on it...is that possible? [i'm the second owner] Anyway, i was just curious if anyone else has had this issue before. KARMA: the glass being half full here...i was suppose to leave for a big ride today. And yes i'm disappointed not to go, but i would have been REALLY disappointed, had Trigger died on me out there...

Phooey on Gilligan! I hated it. Handled like @#$%. Couple years back, when i first got my bike. The metzler rear caught a nail and of course I couldn't get anyone to patch it, so in my haste i grabbed the oem Dunlap replacement [think it was the 404]. Anyway it was an awful combination. I recently replaced them (the rear only lasted for some 6K+ miles) with the Avon Venoms--Love em! I can't speak for the 'commanders' (i tried to get them, but i couldn't get them in a wide-white wall) so i went with the venom...and i'll be sticking with them from here out. later

brake pads?????
rjmalizia replied to Silver Bullet's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
As usual, a day late. i was kind a under the gun, so i went with the OEM Yamaha replacements for the rear. The odd thing...at least what I thought to be odd was that the bike (Trigger) only has 18k miles and the original pads were just about to the metal. The replacement went easy enough, but i noticed that after my initial test ride and following a short one today, that the rear rotor is more than just a little warm, well it was very hot to the touch. So, if the rear brake is dragging a bit, that would explain the short pad life, but is this normal? The front rotors are ice cold follow the same ride...and if anything i tend to put more effort on the front brakes when stopping and slowing. And...is there a break in process for new pads, and if so what is it? I tried telling the Mrs that it involved a long 200+ mile ride, but she didn't buy it. thanks all.- 4 replies

What Trigger really wants: Wide White Wall Tires
rjmalizia replied to rjmalizia's topic in Watering Hole
Wow...I just love these tires. Big thumbs up for the Avon Venoms. the bike handles better on the road than ever before. I no longer "feel" every imperfection in the road (felt like the headset was too loose) and she corners much better too. Thanks all for the recommendations. Ron
