  3. I put a full set of the M-73 on my 89 this summer. So far working great. Even though I live in Canada they came to me fairly quick too. Highly recomended.

  7. Ignition timing does affect how fuel burns quite often when you get engine knock the two solutions are 1) use higher octane fuel or 2) retard your ignition timing. The poping in the exhaust from high octane fuel could be the result of unburned fuel escaping through the exhaust valve do to late ignition, remember regular burns faster than high octane.

I do not know how currant the info is but if it is there are a few locations in the USA and one here in Ontario. It appears you can mail order or purchase over the counter if you are close enough. Also the higher the octane rating on a fuel the slower the burn rate and higher the flash point ( in effect octane is a flame retardent) this is to prevent preignition or engine knock in high compression engines. In low compression engines (leaving ethanol out of the eqaution) this actually amounts to a down grade in fuel quality as far as the engine is concerned. Ignition timing among other things also takes into account the type of fuel you burn. The higher the octane rating the more your timing should be advanced. Keep in mind, too much advance timing can create a hard starting issue.

The fact of the matter is ethanol aside, regular is a better burning fuel as due to the fact that when you raise the octane level in fuel you actually slow down or raise the flash point of fuel. This why you use it in engines with either high compression or advanced timing such as high performance cars, weed eaters and chain saws etc., otherwise you get preignition comonly known as pinging. Preignition or pinging is more than just that noise your hear, it is damaging to the pistons. The top of a piston that has sufferred severe or extended pinging, often comes out looking like someone nailed it with a shotgun. One of the things that makes ethanol so bad is that it absorbs moisture. Over time as the ethanol depletes the moisture remains in the form of condensation. If the engine is running on fairly regular basis this should not be an issue. However once the egine is stored for an extended period of time the ethanol depletes. the moisture remains and does its havoc with the fuel system. Adding fuel stabaliers, and keeping the fuel tank full will help prevent this. Seafoam for example claims to stabalize fuel and control moisture issues in fuels with 10-15% ethanol up to E-85 for up to two years. Using ethanol free or high test when storing an engine will also help when storing an engine. One final note with ethanol fuel although I cannot personally verify it, there have been statments made that high levels of ethanol can attack the rubber parts in some older engines so if and when 15% ethanol comes into the picture this may be something to consider. If you start running higher octane fuel slightly advancing the ignition timing may be an option to consider, although keep in mind that when advancing ignition timing, too much can create a hard starting issue.

  12. Ok that could be misconstrued On a more serious note, did you get checked out sometimes sore ribs can be more than just sore. Other wise glad you could walk away from it. Scary how you can be on full alert 23:59:59 / 7 but forget that one second and something usually happens.
  13. If your new diaphrams are the sirius or oem style, in other owrds identical to the old ones simply very carefully stretch them over the washers. If you have the JBM style snip the plastic washers off with side cuttters and discard then simply and gently slip them over the metal ridge.

  17. Looking at Ivans third picture if he had the fore thought to rotate the coupler a little so the full label was readable we could get the Canadian tire pert number and size right of the label. Bad Form Ivan
  18. But I get waste oil from work for FREE. On a more serious note I quit using synthetic because I find the engine runs quieter on regular oil and when you think about it regular was good enough long before synthetic came along and dirty oil is dirty oil regardless which one you have and needs to be changed in a reasonable time frame.

Heck its all in the timing. as soon as the engine stops cranking usual at a peak compression point release and quickly rehit the start button, works every time, almost!!! but at least you don't have to buy 2 feet of expensive wire or replace or rework starter,,,leaving more time for BEER. PS if that don't work have another beer by than the engine will have cooled of enough to start. Did I mention AGM battery's cut into the beer fund too. Oh I almost forgot If you are away from home,,,, only shut off your bike at Icecream stands, by the time you finish your icecream it will crank. Now does that not sound so much better than doing all that extra work or spending money on useless stuff you can't eat or drink:thumbsup2:

  23. First lets just say that I am glad you are OK. With regards to trying to salvage your bike. Mine was written off too in 2007 and I bought back from the insurance company and restored it. So, here are a few pointers to consider. don't accept the first settlement don't go for the 1st buy back price they give you mine dropped $1000 by the time I decided to buy it back make sure the main structure is not distorted (even a small amount can affect the tracking of the bike. (I had my bike taken to my house so I was able to completely check it out before deciding) If and when you do decide to buy back your bike be prepared to invest a lot of time (and beer ) into the project. Don't cut cornors when restoring, do it right and while you have it apart take the time to do little extras like wheel bearings diff seals and anything else you can think of so you won't have to touch it again for awhile If you plan to farm it out to get someone else to do the work it most likely is not worth it because the cost will probably exceed replacing it. Lastly before deciding to buy it back find out how much time you have to make up your mind so you don't have to rush your decision (my insurance co gave me a year, not that I needed it but it gave me the time to go on vacation for a month and decide when I got back.
