Not that I would recommend pushing the limit while pulling a trailer but if his trailer has a swival type hitch on it like mine does than you could literally lay the bike flat on the ground without any interference from the hitch. . Maybe even get air born long enough to do a barrel roll and land back on your wheels .....OK I'm getting off the mark now....As Yammer would say... I'll go crawl back in my corner now

Excuse my ignorance for asking but what is the Marshall mod and how does it differ from a basic CB installation were you get rid of the multiplexer and run separate antennas for CB and radio, by running one antenna and cable directly to the CB and another directly to the radio?

Amen to that ....But hey Just because you chose the wing... No reason to to let a little bantering drive you off .... Like it say's in the introduction all are welcome and the best part ....... None of us are perfect. Except for maybe Me but thats because I wear a halo But we are a fun and caring group.

home made set up for wet setting floats on the bench

Hard to say. Setting the floats doesn't take long at all, maybe an hour give or take for all four carbs, but rebuilding the carb's is another story. I am pretty sure I could do a set in half the time it took me to do mine since mine was somewhat of a learning process not having rebuilt venture carb's prior to this. Carl on the other hand is probably A lot faster at it because he has done few carb's now and most likely has it down to a science by now. -

Thanks Wayne but I discovered in windows eight if you highlight the pic click edit it takes you to paint were you can resize it. Downside is it replaces the pic with the resized one were I remember the tool for xp just placed the resized pic beside the original. So I created another folder copied the pics to it and resized them there. -
I just finished rebuilding my carbs and decided I wanted to wet set my float levels rather than using the dry setup technique. Good thing too because while doing the settup I discovered one of my new needle and seats was defective, the needle would stick in the seat. sometimes closed and sometimes open. Had this occurred while on the bike I would have had to take it all out again So using an old well cleaned out fire extinguisher modified and fitted with a schrader valve, to supply gas under pressure to the carb I put this setup together. I pressurized it to 3.25 lbs using a small bicycle pump and by the time the float bowl filled the pressure equalized at 2.5 lbs. One last thing to remember,.. put the proper fire extinguisher back in the wall bracket when your done ........Just say'n

I believe I made an error some years ago. I got to thinking how I had some bearing play back then and so I tightened up the bearings using the bounce method. I cannot remember exactly how it went but it was something along the lines where you adjusted the bearings to the point where when you flicked the handle bars it only bounced once off the steering stop once rather than back and forth a couple times. I guess my flick was more of a toss than a flick ( just don't know my own strength sometimes ). Anyway I remember it doing the sway thing at the time and backing the nut off to were it just stopped. When I replaced the E-II's with E-III's the sway came back. I guess it was still too tight. So while on the center stand, I noticed although the steering head moved smoothly it was very tight so I adjusted the bearings to a point of 0 lash but without any perceptible bearing play (almost like a set of wheel bearings minus the .001" bearing lash. and now Ben and bike are Happy campers. PS a visual inspection and fresh grease are forth coming in the near future but for now I believe I am in good shape. .

Turn the steering bars Maybe in a parking lot at a very slow crawl, but above that I,m pretty sure I ride it like a horse and just steer with my legs . As far as leaning goes I have ridden my buddies gold wing a few times and could not even come close to my venture without scrapping.

Solved the problem! I had carb issues and (no I know carbs don't effect steering). As I was saying I had carb issues and ended up rebuilding them. While the bike was down I rechecked the steering head and found the bearing preload was far too tight I backed off the nuts about 1/4 turn. Yesterday after I put the carbs back on I took it for a road burn and had it up to 160km (about 100 mph) and no sway at all, it just sat there rock steady. Going around the curves improved too, it was like it was on rails, were before the bike would try to straighten up while going around a bend.

And if they really don't know what they are doing find a local knowledgeable member who is willing to help, and put it right. A good many of the members have done their own clutches and many know better what they are doing then some of the bike shops. -
About 6 years ago a 2x4 fell on my windshield (don't ask). Any way a nail in the 2x4 put a slight 6 inch scratch in the windshield. I buffed out the windshield with nothing other than Meguiars plastx and it came right out leaving the windsheild looking like new. http://www.meguiars.com/en/automotive/products/g12310-plastx-clear-plastic-cleaner-polish/

Unfortunately this is a common method and one I too was taught 40 years ago when I started out as an apprentice Mechanic. But it is not the correct way and one that has often resulted in bearing failure. One of the factors being that one persons idea of finger tight is not always the same as another's. The 1-7 thousands of an inch or a hair amount of free play allows for expansion of the hub as it warms up preventing the bearings from becoming too tight during operation. Bearings which become too tight begin to heat up and is why you often see them come out a straw color even though they have plenty of grease.

Only poking .....How do you get off so easy?

Sorry to here such sad news Bob. Condolences to all concerned.

I have only ever hand packed wheel bearings be it a trailer, car or truck and never had a bearing failure, even on boat trailers that go in the water. I always use a grease designed for high speed, extreme temperatures and resists water wash out. Bearings should be checked and repacked at least once every other year. Boat trailers more often. Personally I am not a big fan of bearing buddies. They are fine for someone who knows what they are doing but all too often people don't and they tend to pump in too much grease and destroy the seal. As wheel hub temperatures increase, grease begins to flow. If the seal is damaged or even popped out all that grease escapes and eventually bearing failure results. A properly packed bearing and hub assembly with a properly installed seal should not require any thing additional. The only time I pack the hub full of grease is when it is on equipment which works in extreme conditions such as deep mud. In those situations the seal is installed backwards more so to keep the mud and water out than to keep the grease in and the Zerk fitting is used to constantly replenish grease that is lost through the reversed seal. Equipment such as this does not normally operate at a high speed. One last IMPORTANT thing a bearing that is discolored anywhere from a straw color to blue has overheated and is toast. Replace it. ....DO NOT under any circumstance buy into the theory that if you can polish away the discoloration the bearing is still usable. This is a common statement made by mechanics who understand nothing about metallurgy. Discoloration of metal due to heat only ever takes place on the surface no matter how hot the metal has gotten, but the metal itself is affected right through the metal. The bearing has been overheated by either improper lubrication or installed too tight. As a wheel hub warms up bearings tighten up even more. If they are to tight to start with, they begin to overheat. I have seen tires on wheels catch fire because some one installed bearings too tight and this on truck wheels which do not even spin as fast as a little trailer wheel. I have seen them get so hot that spindles have snapped off hence the lost truck wheels you often read about in the paper. This is why as I stated earlier you need to have a .001" - .007" free play known as bearing lash or end play in the bearing.

Happy Birthday Minnie. Hope Muffin Man treated you special.

One odd thing about bearing part numbers, the part number is pretty much standard among most bearing mfr's. Be it Timken, NTN, Koyo, BCA or SKF.. and most automtive stores and some industrial stores can get them for you. Drive out the cups and get the numbers off of them as well.
-
You should be able to get the bearings from Canadian tire. Check the trailer section or the boating section. Or the local automtive stores. When you install them pack the roller bearings by hand with high quality wheel bearing grease before installing them. Install the hub on the axle. Tighten the bearing nut to 50 ft pounds while turning the wheel. Loosen them one full turn. Torque them to 10 foot lbs while turning the wheel then back off 1/4 turn. You should have .001" to .007" end play as measured with a dial indicator. Basically if you do not have a dial indicator grab the wheel and try to move it in and out. You should feel no more than a hairs worth of movement and the wheel should turn freely. Do not over pack the center of the hub with grease. Grease expands when it gets warm and the pressure can pop your seals.

Probably because if a person is going to steal something they want it to start and be able to get away quickly.

I was just sitting here thinking What beautiful weekend this was and how with my bike down it would have been a little depressing. But thanks to you for inviting me to take Scamper and join you for a Saturday afternoon ride I had a great time and so the weekend was not a total loss. Marita also really enjoyed the time she spent with Marca while you and I went off on the bikes. The way she talked on the way home it sounds like they got along really well despite you and me not being there to supervise. I guess its safe to say say that they can be left alone together. Once again think you Carl You have to wonder. With all the forums there are on the web today, I wonder how many go beyond being just a forum and form the types of friendships and bonds this forum has.
-
Yeah Not having my own bike (not that I wasn't grateful having the loan of Scamper) It was kind of hard to keep up. Or maybe Scamper was just feeling a little put out, being somewhat put out to pasture. Good thing I was there to give old Scamper some excersize.

Its great when in this day and age people can still make a commitment work over the long haul. Congratulations you too.
