  1. Good for you. I change my own tires but I have no balancer. I balanced the rear tire the old fashion way 18,000 miles ago and when I put a new tire on the front I took the tire to a dealer and had it balanced about 6,000 miles ago and I actually think the front might be slightly out of balance. So go figure. Good Luck,, Jerry
  2. I have one of those black plastic ones in my garage somewhere and it's in very good condition as I recall. I took it off to put one of the chrome one's on an 89 I had. If anyone is interested in it, let me know and I will try and find it . Jerry
  3. Very interesting! Jerry
  4. I can't remember exactly how many miles I had on my 84 when I sold it but it was in the 80K plus range and I had owned the bike since it had around 6K on it and the 2nd gear never gave me any problems AND I didn't even know they had a problems until several years later. Jerry
  5. Pretty simple stuff, drive the speed limit and you will have no problem. I have never received a ticket I didn't deserve. We have recently had a group of State Police in our County. As I understand it they are allowing 6 MPH over the speed limit and no tolerance for anything else. Jerry
  6. Well I really wanted to come to this one but the date just ain't gonna work, to close to a long holiday weekend. Like someone else said, I'll have to live it through pictures and posts. Jerry
  7. I have some friends that take a motorhome into Mexico down the main land side of the Baja every winter. They have some horror stories but it seems if you stick with other Americans you are not to bad. I would not cross the border on a bet. I have been down there and I don't like it. I also lived in Kenitra Morocco for a couple of years, another not very friendly place but I thinks it's better then Mexico. Good Luck, Jerry
  8. Joe, I agree with you, what a pig the RSV is. First let me say the bike is great for running down the Interstate, very comfortable. I like the way it looks and of course the engine is bullet proof. I have been riding my RSV for some 30,000 miles now and I got to tell you I have been looking at the older Ventures to see what is available. I even took a ride on a new BMW, man what a dream that bike is. After getting back from a 5,000 trip recently and having two close encounters with the braking system, I am ready for something else in a bike. I had a lot of time to think about the good and the bad things on the RSV and although there are more good then bad it still has a lot of bad things. I forgot to comment on another post, I think that is the first time I've heard the RSV classified as a Cruiser. Jerry
  9. Mine was doing that at the start of this season, floats were not stuck but there must have been something holding the needle valve open. Took them apart and cleaned them, works fine. By the way there is a real good write up in the tech section on how to do this very thing. Even if the float is stuck sometimes you have to take them apart to fix the problem. Jerry
  10. Although I Have my HD pipes drilled completely out there is still part of the baffles in there that cause a lot of turbulence of the air flow and In my opinion it has some back pressure. That would also be the reason for them being so quiet. I'm not sure you would have to re-jet these engines even if you put a straight pipe on it. Jerry
  11. That's exactly why this dumb old carpenter only changes one thing at a time. Sure as heck you think it's one thing and it's the other. Glad you found it though, Jerry
  12. Take your plug to an auto parts store and buy an oversized plug. It will thread right in making new threads and all will be right in the world again. Good Luck, Don and I must have posted at the same time, his idea works also. Jerry
  13. BOO

    State Laws

Here in Illinois they don't enforce the pipes for sure, a lot of guys run straight pipes with no problem. I've seen them really get on the throttle right in front of the cops with no problem. I've heard they enforce the ape hangers but I really don't see that either or have I heard of anyone being stopped for that then again I don't ride with anyone that has them. Like some have said, just don't draw attention and you should be fine. Jerry
  14. I don't know if there is a size to fit the first gens but I am running a Dunlop E III on the rear and currently have around 18,000 miles on it. I would have to say it is a hard tire though but I have never felt it slip either on the dry or wet pavement. When it comes time I will replace it with another E3. Jerry
  15. That's just one of the reasons I don't pull a trailer. Jerry
  16. I was going to comment on this thread. Several years ago the guys use complain about the lights being to bright, especially the cruise control lights so they would put resister and all kind of things on them to dim them down. Good luck with your project. Jerry
  17. Great, glad you found it. Jerry
  18. Not much magic here, it's either the wiring or the bulb. I'm betting on the wiring, some little thing you're not seeing. Take a multi meter and check for voltage at the socket. Good luck, Jerry
  19. I would have to agree with Dick (rhncue), clean the Carbs. There is a write up in the Tech library about this and it tells you in great detail how to do it. Think you could do it in 3 -4 hours. You may have float that has a hole in and has gas inside. Usually gas will pour out on the ground if this is happening. Usually the floats don't get out of adjustment but then can for different reasons. A sticking slide valve is definitely not helping your situation. Sea foam is a great product but it can't clean out of the ports in a Carb. Get yourself some good Carb cleaner and clean the CARBS. At least that will eliminate one problem and if your condition still exists then you can at least count out the Carbs. Good luck, Jerry
  20. One year at one of the old VTS meets the Yamaha Tech giving a talk was asked the same question about the valve. As I recall he blamed it on the "O" rings sticking because of non use. He recommended to turn it to the reserve position and leave it there. There was some concern about leaking if the "O" was damaged. As usual Yamaha didn't do a thing to correct the problem for the 10 years the bike was in production. Jerry
  21. George, Bearings are not usually an issue with these bikes. Out of the probably 250,000 plus miles I've put on the Ventures I have only replaced the front bearing on a bike one time. It was an 86 with about 75,000 on the clock. When I had the dealer change the tires he noticed some roughness after changing the tire so we changed them, what a rip by the way. Anyway I had noticed nothing while riding the bike. The Rip is you can buy these bearings about anyplace that sell Timken or many other bearings, it seems to be a stock bearing. Found that out after having the dealer change them for about $150.00. I wouldn't change them just because the manual says to but that's just me. Jerry
  22. I think they have discontinued the 491 Elite II's, at least thats what I heard. Jerry
  23. I just tightened my steering before leaving on the trip and it was about a half turn also, can't imgine why it would be that loose. When I got my bike back from the dealer after the shock install it had 0 air in it. Jerry
  24. Hey Don, we will be coming right past Rochester, NY. tomorrow, stand on the overpass and wave to us as we go by. We are in Austinburg Ohio tonight. See you at Vogel next week. Jerry
  25. Yeah there are several hams on this forum but I dont know anyone using the headset but that would sure be the way to do it. I dont believe it would take much but I cant say I have ever tried to do it. Good luck, Jerry W9FE
