1st gen CB squelch problem, splitter/duplexer
BOO replied to Gearhead's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
Jeremy, How's the CB doing? What was the problem if you figured it out? Jerry -
My left front likes to collect water, when it gets up to the connector strange things begin to occur. The Ground is always something good to check. Jerry

1st gen CB squelch problem, splitter/duplexer
BOO replied to Gearhead's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
Thanks Jerry. I'm not an electronics guy. I've seen these things referred to as a duplexer and as a matching box. To me, it "splits" the signal to the CB and radio. It's a Firestik box designed for that purpose, about the same size as the factory stock "splitter". Yeah I went their site to see what they are selling and it apprears to be about the same thing that the orignal was. Is overloading the front end permanent, and how does it happen? Now like I said this usually happens to the am/fm radio when you transmit on the CB and the antenna is not disconnect to the am/fm side. and yes it can burn up something. I'm sure how this could have happen to the CB receive side though unles the PTT switch malfunctioned somehow. Remember, now it is stuck in RX mode even with no antenna (or box) connected. I know it's bad to transmit with no antenna connected, but turning it on shouldn't be a problem, should it? Not a problem.. I'm probably making this a bigger problem than it really is. Checking all the connections like that was suggested is a real good starting point. Check the ones where the head plugs into the faring. All kinds of problems can be generated from there. Both sides CB and am/fm. I should have went to the other post and read it before I responded above, Sorry Jerry -

Jeremy, I posted on your other post so you know what I think, right or wrong. Anytime you cut the coax and insert a fitting or any thing in the line there is going to be some losses. I would't think you could tell much difference by listening to the audio if the radio was hooked up direct or through the duplexer. Makes me think there is a lot of loss in that duplexer. BUT I would say at this point your squelch problem is not related to the duplexer. Can I presume the transmit does not work at all? And when you key the mic does the receive go away and you only have silence from the radio? Jerry -
Steve, You might be surprised to find out what some people will do to meet other VentureRiders over an Ice Cream. Sometimes it takes a while to get something from point c to point d but eventually someone will be going that direction. The guys on another site passed a bike on a trailer from down south somewhere to Canada on the east coast. Jerry

Idle mixture screws ?
BOO replied to StarFan's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Haven't been following your problems with your bike but I think the first thing I would do is make sure the carb's are sync'ed. I think you can get a little different mixture by just setting the needles up or down a little bit in the carb's Just my Jerry -
While not knowing to much about the firestick switches etc and not knowing how you had the antenna's hooked up, I'm taking quite a guess here. It sounds like you have done what is called "overloading the front end" and the receiver in your CB. I'm not sure how this could have happen because if the duplexer was not working properly the overloading would happen to the am/fm radio. I may be way off base here but I'm sure someone can correct me. If you have a splitter in the antenna circuit, that's a problem, it has to be a duplexer. Good luck, Jerry

I have stopped along the interstate when a Harley guy was pushing his ride down the side of the road. Asked if I could help, he called me a few names for riding the 86 Yamaha I was on and no he didn't need any help from a rice burner. Even after that I offered to go and get him some gas if that's what he needed. I take it from the tone of his voice he was not out of gas. I just smiled and went on down the highway. I do ask most people if I can help especially if they are on a bike. Jerry

My wife really goes after these kind of guys also. Drives me up a wall sometimes but she IS right. She fought with the phone company one time over .21 cents, went on for 3 or 4 months. I don't know how it turned out, I was afraid to ask....LOL But I bet she got it. Jerry

Steve, We passed a trailer from Ga to Canada a couple of years ago. The little bike might be a little harder to do but if you're not in to big a hurry I bet we can get it to you. Just try and set it up and see how it works out. Jerry

I want to change my own clutch
BOO replied to a topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
DON'T put the bike up on the center stand to do this operation, you'll loose about a half a quart of oil. DON'T ask how I know this. Jerry -
As you well know Don it was from the "NOTORIOUS email from Freebird " asking if there was interest in a new site. I was one of the first 5 or 6 that help get the site started and vote on the different forum software's. So if someone don't like the software being used today you can blame the first few people here. See it's always been a democracy! It's been a great site, Thanks, Jerry

I bought one of those a few years ago but I didn't like it. The wool was much to long to suit me. I tried it all one summer but it was to hot for me. I finally bought one of the sheep skins from Alaska Sheep or whatever it's called. Good luck, maybe it will work for you. Jerry

If you go on Scarecrows site, he has a lot of examples of his work to choose from. I had a bike done by him, just kind of high lighted and was always real happy with it. He also posts a schedule of where is going to be and you can make appointments on line to have the work done. I haven't been to the site lately so I hope it's still there. I know he is still painting. Jerry

I noticed one of the reflectors laying the road here in northern Illinois a week or two ago and almost stopped and picked it up. Just wanted to take a good look at it. I have noticed that up here the reflectors are level with the road whereas in Florida and Alabama the reflectors stick up above the road surface. I figured they could do that down south because they don't plow snow like we do here. There are a lot of things laying on the highway especially where there are barriers in the center separate the opposing lanes. Lots of junk. Be careful, Jerry

Those pictures been around for a while and he didn't make it, rest of the story is true. I think if you go to the snopes or whatever it is web site, it has the facts. Jerry

Technically the "Splitter" in the system is really a "Duplexer". Other than that there's a lot of good information is this thread. Jerry

Not sure about the Tech article, there probably is one somewhere on the site. I have had 4 different Ventures and never had a valve shimmed. I'm guessing at the mileage but the 4 bikes combined had 310,000 miles put on them. I know there is a recommended mileage to have the valves checked on the new bikes but I think the customer has to pay for that and it wouldn't be cheap I'm guessing. Maybe someone else will chime in with some different ideas. Jerry

I have the taller and wider Yamaha one on my 01. Like it a lot in fact I took it off last summer and put the standard one back on and my wife didn't like the standard windshield. Got to say I didn't either. Much prefer the larger one. I had the oversized one on the 89 I had also and really liked it a lot, the new owner took it off right away in favor of a smaller one. Just whatever feels right to you or more importantally how the boss feels on the back. Jerry

I like Dan have put several thousand miles on plugged tires. Depends on where the hole is and if you can get the plug in so it seals. The mushroom style work very well. Bottom line is you have to be comfortable with what you ride or what you do to your ride. Jerry

Had a HD that did the same thing, what a pain. In my case there must have been something in the line. I finally took everything off and flushed it all several times, reinstalled and never had another problem. It's not fun to have the brake lock up and not be able to release it with the pedal. Good luck, Jerry
