  1. I have a habit of sticking my foot out and trying to distract the dog and once in a while I'll take a kick at the dog. In your case and as big as the dog was that guy might have grabbed me by the foot and drug me off the bike. I may have to rethink my actions around the dogs. I have noticed we don't seem to have many dogs chasing the bikes as we use to. I have no reason for that statement but I believe it's been two or three years since a dog came after me.   2. Those things been around for years. I don't think they can handle anything as big and heavy as the Venture. I didn't read the information but it looks scary to me. BOO
  3. They're all great bikes and for different reasons. I prefer my 01 for comfort and ride position but the earlier Ventures were great also, I didn't like my feet under me. I have owned and put a lot of miles on a 1984,1986 and 1989. I did like the bigger bags of the later ones but like someone said I think the 84 was faster. As far as the ride I couldn't tell any difference in the ride of the 84 compared to the other two. Good Luck, BOO
  4. Sounds normal to me, I get a light about 175 and I usually go another 35 to 40 miles. BOO
  5. I'm not sure that would be a bike that I would want. I agree I would have liked have seen a few thousand miles on it just to keep it lubed etc. It sure does looks original, including the tires. I did notice one thing. There seems to be an add on cooler of some kind on the radiator grille. Can't see it to well but it don't look like the grille that I remember on these bikes. Did anyone else notice that? BOO

  7. Yeah I was going to say out of round or it's not seated properly on the rim. The thing is these kind of problems seem to be worse at higher speeds. Be sure you're running 40 lbs or so air in the front tire. Good Luck Boo
  8. Sounds to me like you think it should turn as easy as the front wheel. eg When you spin the wheel by hand you expect the wheel to turn for some time without stopping. I don't believe the rear wheel does that mainly because it has to turn the gears/oil in the rear pod. Am I reading you right? BOO

  10. Eck, Gots to go along with you. When I brought my bike home from Tennessee it only cost me about $50.00. I had the trailer for two days and I think it would have been much cheaper if I took it back to the place I picked it up but you get dinged for leaving it in another state. Boo

  12. Kind of interesting, little pricey but interesting. Wonder what will happen to the gas mileage? Usually it takes more fuel to make more horsepower. I know the needles rattle around in holes but I didn't know it was causing wear as they describe. I thought the springs that set on top the needles would keep that from happening? I also note of interest and I did not mention this before because I didn't want Kent to accuse me of being overly stupid but I see they include new springs that hold the slides into the Carburetor. I did an unscientific check of the 4 springs in my Carbs and found one to be weaker then the others. I got a new one from the dealer and it seemed to be equal to the ones I had. Probably need to have the carbs sync'd now after changing that spring. Don't know if it makes any difference but I changed it just the same. I'm not to concerned about more zip from the bike, it does me well the way it is. It will run the speed limit. LOL. BOO

  15. It lives, it lives. When I do anything major to the bike (yes to me this is major) I'm always concerned if the bike will actually run. Okay after adjusting the floats, I went on a little test run, of course not near long enough to know for sure what to expect. 100.8 miles on about half secondary roads and the other half on interstates. Used 2.45 gals of gas so if I use someones math from another post then I must have got around 50 MPG but with my calculator it appears to be more like 41.1 MPG. About what I have been getting. We are headed to Arkansas on Saturday so that should tell a little more about the gas mileage except we will be two up and loaded (the bike). I will also note the plugs look lean and I,m getting a little popping on deceleration. Not to bad so I'm going to ride it as is. I'm also running with no washers (shims) on the carburetors. Was it worth the effort? Don't know but it's always nice to have everything adjusted to the specs it was designed for. BOO

  17. Thanks for the tip, I'm just about to that process. I was cleaning up some oil or I would have had the bike back together. Evidently the last time I had the Carbs off the bike I didn't get the drain lines on the air boxes and I have some oil to clean up but not much. Thanks, BOO
  18. I don't make it to the rally in Harrison, AR. I've read and read the articles about adjusting the float levels in several posts so I finally convinced myself I should at the very least check them. So I now have RSV parts strung all over two garages. I hope I remember where all them little parts go. I'm mostly just kidding but I did take them apart and adjust the level and pretty much followed Goose's write up about it. I do wish he would correct the picture so that it shows the proper way of checking the floats. Anyway mine were not to bad I guess,two of the floats were .22 and the other two were .28. I now have them adjusted to what I think is .34 if I am measuring them right. I do not have the bike back together but I have a lot of confidence it will be fine. The thing I'm really looking forward to is the 10 percent increase in gas mileage that Goose promised. BOO
  19. I'm a Dunlop man so I'm glad to see such a favorable response to your use of the E3's. Of course I'm the one reporting over 25K miles on the E3. I have a second E3 on now and would have to go look at how much mileage I have at this time but I'm thinking it's probably 5K or so. This tire I believe is softer in the center than the other one I had and I say that with no scientific proof other then I can't make it squeal if I slide the rear tire but the first one really squealed when slid. ?? I think all the Dunlop's even when new have some noise when you are riding off center. BOO

  22. You know the smartazz comment is "I'd have to kill you if I tell you" but I kind of like Bobbie and she needs someone to drive her around. Actually it's an ongoing issue. I've probably had 6 or 8 different spark plugs in this bike. Even different heat ranges as well as adjusting the gap tighter and wider. Played games with the air cleaners, have tried the K&N filters and also tried letting it have more air with holes in the filter holders. Played with the Carburetors a little, mostly just shimming the needles. Made sure the chokes are completely off. Of course have the Carbs cynd whenever I run into you guys. Bottom line, I use the standard NKG plugs in the heat range recommended. If I put the original three shims on the needles I get a little popping when I close the carbs. Runs best with no shims on the needles. The exhaust pipes are quite black and one of these days I'm going to be somewhere where I can have the gases checked. I'm also going to check the floats one of these days. There you go, just a whole bunch of nothing but since I've owned the bike it has went from 38-39 to 40-41. Not much for all the work I have done to it. I'll have a chance to check the mileage two up for about a 600 mile run in a couple of weeks. BOO
  23. 50 MPG at 70 MPH, I'll have to see it to beleive it,,, That's what I have always said. There are several here on the forum that do get close to 50MPG. I finally met someone with that kind of gas mileage and he lives about 1,500 feet from me. He doesn't do anything fancy with the bike, just turns it off for the winter and starts it up in the summer and if any work needs to be done he takes it to the dealer in Woodstock. I don't know what to tell you, I rode behind him most of the time. He probably weights 50 - 60 pounds less than me, I probably had another 30-40 pounds of stuff in the bags he didn't have and I ride with an oversize windshield, he has a standard windshield. Oh oh, I know what it is, I wear a helmet and he doesn't. I see you are in Elgin, he doesn't ride very much but maybe we'll try and get together sometime for a tank or so. BOO
  24. Squidley, I'm not sure what you say is so true anymore and I get my share of flat tires on my pickup. There was a time when I couldn't get a tire plugged, everyplace I went wanted to remove it and patch but in the last year or maybe more I find most of the places I deal with will plug the tire. So maybe the new glues etc have changed. I might also say I have never had a plug leak so I am presuming it is bonded well to the tire. Like I said before in another post a person has to make up his or her own mind about riding on a plugged tire or a patched tire for that matter. I have no problem doing it. I can ride down the road and never think about it but if you sit in the seat and worry about it the whole time you are on the bike, replace the thing, it ain't worth it. AND I'm not so sure a patch is much better than a plug. Sorry to hear you guys won't be in Arkansas, was looking forward to harassing you in person again. I may have to just run over to Michigan sometime. BOO
