  1. I got to tell you I'm not much for preventive maintenance. Sure I change the oil and plugs fairly regularly. Usually change the tires before the threads are showing but I never have changed the brake fluid or the fluid in the clutch. Just added as needed. I will also add I've been riding for probably longer then most of you folks be alive. Now, recently, last Thursday to be exact my clutch failed, no fluid. The slave cylinder was leaking big time. I ordered the repair kit and all the gaskets. Both cases on the left side have to be pulled to get at that berger. Long and the short of it is the cylinder housing was so pitted I don't think I could have honed them all out. Maybe but I decided I didn't want to have to redo the job a second time. To get to the part you have to take the exhaust pipes off the left side as well as the foot rest, the shift linkage and the hanger for the exhaust pipe. Morale of the story is a 20 minute clutch fluid change would have saved me 3 or 4 hours of labor and $150.00 in parts....... Hummm, maybe I'll change the fluid in the brakes while I'm waiting for the parts. BOO
  2. Don't be telling all the good stuff. There's at least two networks in my neighborhood that I can get into, no I don't going looking around their computers I feel that's like walking into someones house and looking around. I do have my own service and it's much more stable then the neighbors. When I am in Florida in the wintertime I don't have a wireless service but there is several people I can get into there and surf the INTERNET for FREE. I have been known to go into motel parking lots or lots of places that seem to not worry about their wireless hub. Most don't even know that can be done. BOO
  3. Those look great Mike.....:thumbsup2::thumbsup2:
  4. I would pull the carbs and give them a good cleaning. It wouldn't take much to cause what you have going on and while I was in there I would adjust the floats to make sure they are within limits. As far are the Sea Foam is concerned I think it will eventually clean up your problem if it is gas related but sometimes it take a few tanks of gas for that to happen. I might agree with the electrical evaluations if the bike hadn't sit for a while but when you have a problem after a long down period it's almost always fuel related. If you sync your carbs so often do they have to be readjusted each time? I get mine synced every time I see George (Mechanic) which is every couple of years or so and they don't seem to change much. BOO
  5. Funny you mention the Goldwings with a single Carb. Didn't know that. A friend of mine has an older Goldwing, maybe it's an 82, and he decided to do just same thing. After playing with it for a year or so he got it to run but not very well. I'm not sure he gave up but that's what I'm thinking. He put an old Carter single barrel on the Goldwing, I'm not sure what it was off of. One of the big things I wonder about when something like this comes up is, how are you going to handle the fuel delivery to each cylinder? Not sure if you know but there are at least 2 different size main jets on the Ventures if not 3. You can't expect to dump the fuel into one intake manifold without some baffles to limit and direct airflow and fuel flow. There is a lot of other issues that would have to be addressed. Good luck if you try and I would be the first to congratulate you if you succeed. BOO
  6. I agree, there must have been something else going on to cause a gain like that. I don't think I got much if any gain when I did mine. Mostly what happen is the Carbs reacted a little better to the throttle row on. Whatever it was I'm glad your gas mileage got up into the area where it should be. BOO
  7. I think what you are seeing is pretty common with the RSV's. I see it in mine and it does seem to settle in the bowls of the Carbs but I haven't noticed any problems it has caused. Just use some Sea Foam from time to time and you should be fine. I don't think it's worth worrying about. BOO
  8. I got tired of messing with the nuts and left them off. If the seat blows off with my big a$$ on it there is bigger problems then the nuts. I guess some would argue your battery could be stolen easier if you leave them off but the only people that where the battery is are Venture riders and we know they wouldn't steal anything....... I was recently working on a Tour Classic and it has a key lock to hold the saddle on. What's the hecks with that? Yamaha couldn't figure out how to put that on the Venture? BOO
  9. I agree, what really happens with the "new" gas is it evaporates over the winter and leaves a varnish or some sort of hard film on the interior of the Carb bowls and coats the jets with a film. I have had the several different sets of Venture carbs apart and I did not see any rubber deteriorating in fact if anything is going on I believe the rubber parts are getting harder as time goes on. My 2 or 3 cents. BOO
  10. I put a new Interstate battery in my bike last year( bought it from a Harley Dealer) so far so good. But they have a couple of grades so I'm told. Any way this is only the second year for the battery so I can't talk about longevity. Maybe you need to take a rode trip down into the US to get a deal. Good Luck, BOO
  11. We also had a Bassett for some fourteen years. Very well behaved dog and when she passed on we really couldn't find another to replace her. Great dog and dumb, only problem she was just as dumb as she wanted to be. Enjoy, BOO
  12. You don't need to replace the disc's just get the stronger spring, rough up the metal disc's and you're set. Someone mentioned just roughing up the disc and putting it back as it was. I think he will be doing that one again in a few thousand miles. Do the upgrade and be done with it. By the way the Yamaha disc's are as good as any, the spring is to light weight. Also pay attention to what was said about the oil. Good Luck, BOO
  13. HA! The only thing I do for Winter storage is pull the snowblower (I know you guys down south don't know what that is) pull the snowblower out of the back of the garage and put the Venture in it's place, sometimes I even take the key out of the Venture. I know it's not the right thing to do but that's just me. BOO
  14. After I sit here for a few minutes thinking about the boots, it makes no sense that the boots would be leaking gas "out". Should be all vacuum inside the boot. Thanks Buddy us ole guys need all the help we can get. Must have something going on at the Carburetor to cause the gas to leak down across the boots and onto the engine. Doesn't seem to be a stuck float as there's not much gas leaking, just enough to make a mess. I know, I know....Seafoam. BOO
  15. There was gas leaking out the seam in the boot and onto the engine, that's what got my attention to start with. I suppose it could be leaking from the Carb and running down the boot, hard to tell. I just started the bike for the first time this season and it's doing a lot of popping besides the gas leak. Didn't think about spraying starting fluid on it to see if it is in fact cracked. Thanks guys, BOO
  16. It appears that at least one of the rubber boots the carbs sit on is cracked. Another one don't look to good. My question is where is the best place price wise to buy these things. If I got to take the carbs off again I'm going to replace them all. This is about four times in the last three years I've taken them off so I'm getting a little tired of this. I think some of you have repaired them but I think I just want to replace them. Thanks for the help, BOO
  17. I can't remember the story about this but I remember seeing it a couple of years ago on this forum. Several things in the picture don't look right. Looks like Ducata paint job on the bike? BOO
  18. Nice color for the Venture. I'm not much for green but that is pretty nice. BOO
  19. Of course the guys who like the Avons will tell you they are the best and I'm gonna tell the Dunlops are the best BUT the Dunlops are about the only tire I have owned. All I've every had on the 4 Ventures I've owned. Soooo I guest the bottom line is "I don't know and probably never will" It's kind of one of those things that if it don't give you any problem then why change. Good Luck with whatever you decide on, BOO
  20. Almost unbelievable. Not perfect though, it's missing a handle bar plug. LOL.... To bad a dealer ended up with it. BOO
  21. Sounds like they may have the wrong size on there. 1/16 inch is quite a bit of slop. We use to put hair spray on them to keep them tight, also spray some paint or vanish on them and when it drys it should be fine. My left grip is loose and continues to turn as I ride it but so far I am to lazy to fix it. I also broke a grip but it was my fault not the manufacturer. I've had these so long they are starting to pit from the sweat. I do like the big grips...... BOO
  22. I'm sure someone will come on here with many more brains than I but I think you should get your floats to spec so it runs good and gets the best gas mileage. As far as the pipes are concerned I don't think I have heard of anyone re-jetting the carbs because of pipes. I have the RK pipes drilled out completely and the bike runs great with about 42 MPG. Good Luck BOO
  23. Yeah I like them too, they do have a nice deep sound to them but my RK's are cheaper unless someone gave you the bubs.. BOO
