Okay, so the wife and I are leaving out on our first long road trip in June. I've been working on the trailer and plan to stay at campground along the way but am looking for someone willing to let us bunk up with them for a day or two along the way so we can shower and refresh ourselves. We will be going from Colorado Springs to Chicago, then following Route 66 down. We will be at the Eureka Springs Meet and Eat for that long weekend. Here's the map of our route: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=217067729114273134767.000498d3e23585862bb97&ll=41.376809,-96.37207&spn=22.416404,35.551758&t=h&z=5 And here's our trip book of some of the stops along the way. I had to remove the pictures to make it small enough to upload.... Nothing in it is set in stone but I wanted to at least have some ideas of things to see along the way. Although we would appreciate recommendations or VR Assistance at any of our stops along the way, if there is anyone in the Chicago area, we will be there on the 19th and 20th of Jun and need a place to sleep. Any recommendations of "must see" things anywhere along the route would be great as well! Thansk! Mike

Marcarl, I thought about that too. That's why they are just looped through a small piece of leather on the trailer that only has about 1/4 brad type nails...just enough to hold them on but would break away very easily!

Thanks Frank. It's coming together! I wanted something different from everyone else. I think I've got it pretty functional but I need to get it down and weight it to see how much of the space is usable. All the wood is as light as I could keep it, so I'm hoping it will still be easily pulled. Wife and I are both on the smaller size with our combined weight being under 290lbs....

I finally got around to adding more to my trailer. I figure my June trip is going to be here before I know it, so I better get after it. I had the basic trailer done but here's what I did yesterday: Added lights, some "decorations" like the saddle bags, cross, reigns, etc. Added some interior battery operated lights. Added some ways to store some bungees. And added some weather stripping on the inside to seal the lids. I still have more of that to add because I ran out. What I've got left to do: add more weather stripping and add locks or latches... Here's a few pictures of what it looks like so far.

I just installed the 1.5 inch risers...I notice the rubber piece between the handle bars and the faring don't reach that high...so there's no rubber between the bars and the faring...is it necessary? And if so, where would I find some high density rubber like that to make an extension? Thanks! Mike

This is funny! I did this very gag about 15 years ago at a party...we used regular metal spoons but it was the same game and we had about 10-15 people standing around in a circle watching....everyone was cracking up! of course that could have to do with the beverages too....hummm, NO...it was definitely the game....

Any Colorado Springs Riders out there know where the best (and least expensive) place is to get my new tires mounted for my '06 RSV? Thanks!

Went on a nice ride from Colorado Springs to Castle Rock and back with my wife today. It was still a little chilly in the morning but afternoon wasn't too bad (except through the higher country). But we didn't need any chaps or overly heavy garments, so I count that good. Two issues I did have. 1. First time using my JM headsets...they are the original pair I got from previous owner. They seem to work well (although had to modify helmet because they were so think they pressed against my ears). The only issues is when I turn the IC up loud enough to hear well, I pick up so much wind noise it's crazy. I guess it's wind noise because I don't hear it when stopped but when going highway speeds it sounds like white noise... 2. Something's wrong with my cruise control. I turn it on, hit the set button let go of gas and it will drop 5-10 mph before trying to engage. Then it will attempt to engage but as soon as it does, it drops out of cc and the Res light comes on...I can click on the Resume button and the Res light starts to blink, but once again, as soon as I feel the cc start to kick in, it drops back out of cruise and the Res light comes on solid again...not sure what's going on...I tried it when I first got the bike from PO 6 months ago but haven't really used it since then...

Got my new tires in the mail today and one of the helmets. I guess my wife's helmet is backordered...good thing we didn't wait until the riding season to get one! I got the skinnier front tire and man is it skinnier!...I had to come back in and look it up to make sure I got the right one! Next step is to get the seats "butlerized"...between the seat and the tire, I think I will be more comfortably close to the ground. At only 5' 7" with 30" inseam, I needed just a little more to feel good. Can't wait until this summer's 2700 mile ride!

You guys and your First Gen "Speed" talk! I've only ridden my second get, but at 150lbs, I'm up to 80 before I know it and still haven't opened it up...why on earth would I need (or want) much more speed than that? are you guys in a hurry or somethin'?:stirthepot: -
Just ordered 2 new tires and 2 new helmets from Motorcycle Superstore. Almost the last thing we "needed" before our 2700 mile ride trip this summer. Got the Dunlop Elite 3 for front and rear...and the HJC IS-33 helmets in Wine to match (as close as we could) the Black Cherry '06 RSV. $495 for the total order ($130 ea/Helmet and $102 front/$130 rear). Not sure if it's a good price but I couldn't really find much better anywhere...free shipping and no tax though...so that helps.

Might also be people that just don't log in until they see something they want to reply to???? Mine logs in automatically but if you don't have cookies turned on, I don't think it does...It might show up as a guest then unless you log in...

VERY NICE -
Anyone wearing this one HJC IS-33? Or does anyone know of another one like it that is cheaper? Specifically I like the clear shield with the integrated smoke-tinted SunShield... http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/1/38/19161/ITEM/HJC-IS-33-Helmet.aspx?WT.ac=SLIsearch

USAF 1993-present. VERY proud and honored to be allowed to serve the greatest country in the world. I'd like to make a few points: 1. Many probably don't know how much those of us in the services that don't see much of the direct action on the front lines truly respect those that do. 2. Most jokes about the AF (and other services for that matter) hit pretty close to home sometimes 3. In reference to number 1 & 2, recent history has seen MANY more AF members serving in non-traditional AF roles. For example, my good friend just got back and he was station with an Army contingent often leading convoys or a gunner in the convoy. I've hear more and more instances of this lately...so some members may take those jokes more personally than others because their experience. I personally take the jokes very well because I know the contribution I make and it matters very little to me what others think... I'm a proud American, a proud AF member, a proud Father and a proud Christian...what more could I want from life?

which 3/4 HJC are you using? We stopped by the stealership today to try some on so we know which sizes to order...I think we have decided to get the 3/4 helmets since we both already have 1/2 helmets...and we like the noise reduction and the pocket for the headsets...
-
Monty, I guess I thought the headset speakers went into the zippered thingy, not the helmet...are the pockets in the helmet itself? That would make big difference for my decision...I guess I need to go to the stealership and check it out again and also find my size...
-
Thanks for all the replies guys! I like the look and functionality of the Scorpion...I think we are going to try them....my main concern is that they will get pretty hot in the summer since we will need to leave the zippered thingy in for the headsets...but I don't guess it will be any worse than a 3/4 or full helmet would be...got another couple of months until we can do any real riding, so I'll keep an eye out on ebay...
-
Yeah, I looked around and didn't find it much cheaper anywhere...I really like the look and feel of it...I know that full helmets are much safer but I like the feel of the half helmet....
-
I'm looking at getting a couple of new helmets for the wife and I. We usually wear half helmets. We would like to start using the headsets since we have the RSV. This is the helmet we like that the stealership has...I like the flipdown sunshades...Anyone have experience with this or suggestions for another one like it? http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/1/38/6973/ITEM/Scorpion-EXO-100-Solid-Helmet.aspx?WT.ac=SLIsearch Thanks!

Got my new (to me) windshield in the mail today! (thanks oldbear!). Decided since it warmed up to 13 degrees today, I would get out there in the garage and install the windshield...while I was at it I went ahead and installed my new windblocker (to keep the air off of my knees) that my dad got me for Christmas. Here's a pic of them installed and the difference in the windshields...
