  1. How dare you interject common sense into this! It's all because it was a HD...nothing more!
  2. I know how you feel. I bought my dream truck in 2008. It was a Dodge Ram Mega Cab with the Hemi and Laramie package. I gladly gave $50K for it. Then it ate a rear main seal at 3000 miles. Then another one at 6000 miles. It ate a third one at 9000 miles, and I traded it for a 2010 Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited. It went through three transmissions in the first 5000 miles. I took it after they fixed it for the third time, and drove straight to the Ford dealer and got a used F150. Never another problem. I can tell you that I will never own another Mopar. Does that mean all, or even most of their vehicles are like that? Of course not. Just like your experience with your HD doesn't mean that all or even most of their bikes are that way. Every once in a while you just get a lemon. I can easily find a thread on this forum where a guy is ready to trade his new Yamaha back in because it is giving him a huge headache. Doesn't mean all Yamahas are bad, just that he got a lemon. I guess it just irritates me to no end to see someone dog a particular kind of bike based on one experience, or worse yet, no experience. The latter is almost always the case with HD. I can find infinitely more people that have went from another manufacturer to HD than from HD to another manufacturer. They are not the be all, end all in motorcycles, but they are not pure garbage, either (unless we are talking a AMF era bike). I also don't get where you guys are coming from on the pricing. MSRP on a new RSV is $18,500, and MSRP on a new Ultra Classic is $21,000. You'll give that much for the RSV (at least in my area they won't budge), but you could actually get the HD for about the same as the RSV, or slightly more. I can guarantee you that the HD will hold a much higher resale value than the RSV. But to some guys the RSV, or the older VR is the best bike ever made. That's cool. I just don't think the dogging of HD is necessary. I own both. Been around both brands for years. Like them both...but heck, I like them all.
  3. One look over the shoulder while merging onto a highway is nowhere near enough. It is not up to the traffic flow to make room for you to get in. They are at an established speed and have the right of way; phone or no phone. It is up to you to make adjustments to merge. You really need to keep an eye on your left hand mirror until you are safely in the driving lane when merging onto the highway. This is true whether you are on a motorcycle or in a tractor-trailer. I hate to say it, but if there had been a accident, you would have most likely been found at fault in this case.
  4. Wow...you seem easily offended. Sorry if I was too blunt. I only know what I have had experience with, and nothing more. I cannot say that you would not have to rebuild the top end of any engine at 100K miles, because I don't know your riding style. I know that I have never had to rebuild a modern Evo engine at over that mileage, but I have had to work on early Evos with much less mileage. I have also had to work on many more metrics with less mileage than that, but there are way more of them out there. Air cooled engines shouldn't frighten anyone. They've been made for a lot longer than water cooled engines. If you maintain them properly, and don't run the guts out of them they will be fine, just like any engine.
  5. Nope...What I know comes from owning a motorcycle shop and what I have parked in the garage... Not sure how many friends you have on HD's, but since you allude to the majority of them needing work I'm guessing it's in the hundreds of thousands. Good on you for being so friendly:thumbsup2:
  6. That's weird. I have read many threads on the HD forum, and I haven't run across anybody that has had to rebuild a Evo motor every three years, but I have read several that put that many miles and more on their Ultras every year. I guess you must be one of those guys that believes everything you hear and read on the interwebs...
  7. His price seems right for the area, but he will have to sit on it and possibly wait months or longer to get that much. I agree that the used HD market is completely flooded now and for the foreseeable future.
  8. You mean like Toledo?
  9. God I hope not! I forwarded the email to Homeland Security's cyber crime folks just for kicks.
  10. I just got this email from the US Dept of Homeland Security: The return email address was U.S. Department of Homeland Security janet01napoliitano@gmail.com This came from big sis herself. Imma so skeered. It had a attachment. Do you think I should open it? Maybe I'll forward it to the FBI and see what they have to say about it... Maybe we should all click the link and email her with our thanks for what a good job she's doing!
  11. Nah, but mine may get coupled with my Sportster and traded for a '11 Ultra Classic Electra Glide. Sorry, but I still like Harleys....
  12. Well, here is the product of 5 lessons. A total of about 4 hours of seat time. Mind you, this kid had never ridden a bike without training wheels, and that was at least 5 years ago... http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e330/rentalguy1/th_VID00051.jpg
  13. Go to http://www.hadit.com It's the best place on the net for first hand vet knowledge on all things VA. If it's any consolation, I suffered a spinal cord injury on active duty in 1994. I finally convinced them to approve me at 100% permanent and total in 2008. It is a hard fight, but it is worth fighting. Look me up over there and I'll see if I can't give you some help on your claim. No personal info on the Iowa VAMC, but good luck with the appt.
  14. I have '83-'89 parts as a saved search and get a email every day. I noticed the same thing. Out of every 50 items, there might be one that seems like a reasonable price. Got one tonight that had a rear brake disc in the mix. They wanted over $300 after shipping. If I'm paying that much I'd prefer to support the local dealer/economy.
  15. gold purchases are based on the assumption that it can be used as currency after the fall of the dollar and collapse of the world economies. This assumption will prove to be baseless, since there will be nothing to buy. It will revert to a barter system after this occurrence. Look at it this way, if you are a farmer, and have extra food that can be sold, would you rather have a gold trinket, or ammunition that can be used to hunt and defend the farm with? Some people say that I am a doomsdayer, but I call it pragmatism. Many won't be ready when the event happens (I'm guessing within the next few years, at best), but I will. What's the worst that will happen following my line of thought? You will have food, water, and shelter should you ever need them due to any event (snowstorm, tornado, lost job, spouse dies, etc). As was said, invest in brass, lead, and non-hybrid vegetable seeds. You'll be better off in the end.

  17. I just bought a pair of HJC HC-31's that match the VR's paint almost exactly (white). The stock headsets mated up very easily. The only hard part was tucking the excess wire to the right side earpieces. I think I gave about $80/each.
  18. hooah
  19. He's officially a biker now. We replaced the clutch and front brake levers, adjusted the brakes and the clutch and put a carb overflow hose on his bike today, then we hit the field. He figured out the clutch after a few tries, but still kept stalling it. I had him hop on the back and took him to the top of a hill with a gentle slope. He then rode about 30 yards down the hill on his own. He was a little freaked out the entire time, because he still doesn't have the location of all the controls down just yet (brainiac, not mechanically inclined), but he kept it upright and got it stopped. It's a start! BTW... I still can't believe that little 4 stroke 125cc pulled both of us up that hill in 2nd gear. That was a total of about 340lbs! Not bad for a $400 bike!
  20. 'Cause you're in NY. The lusty, sexy ones are in TN

  22. Sounds that way to me. I enjoy my boat time, but not nearly as much as my riding time. BTW...you ready for the snow? Looks like the end of next week we'll be back up to good riding weather.
  23. We're really beginning to get over the PC stuff in this country. You're handicapped. You're a cripple. Get over it.
  24. How about 95% of parking lots are on private property, and they can do what they wish? If you don't want parking for pregnant chicks, then start a business, buy some commercial property, and don't put the signs up. Otherwise, recognize the fact that the only way you have to argue this point is by not spending any money at those establishments. Personally, I respect the preggers chix parking spaces. Maybe it is because my wife just had a baby, I don't know. I do know that it wasn't easy for her to walk very far. Her choice or not.
