Final drive swap
54chevybelair replied to 54chevybelair's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks for the useful comments. I have been following the other post similar to this one and I am going to invest in this change next spring. My bike will also be a dedicated sidecar rig for the next few years, so I may install a car tire on the rear while everything is apart. Yamak, our rigs are so similar we will have to keep each other up to date on how this modification worked. -
God has blessed me with a great life and loving parents. I have many memorable Christmas’s to choose from. I have also been blessed with my wife and son so by far the best Christmas was after my son was born. This picture was taken from his first Christmas and seeing his face light up is the best gift anyone could ever ask for.

Final drive swap
54chevybelair replied to 54chevybelair's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks for the information Dingy The use of my 5th gear is more limited now with the sidecar. So maybe this swap will be good all around for my application. As far as my fuel mileage, the sidecar has already killed that. Expressway speeds my MPG is flat out embarrassing. -
Now that I have a sidecar on my 2004 RSV, I notice the need to feather the clutch considerably more than before just to get it to move. I have read that some of you put V-Max gears in your RSV to make 5th gear more useful. My question is for those of you that have done this does it make much of a difference in first gear, just trying to get rolling?

I don't see how this kit would work for a 2nd Gen. See this post for pictures http://venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=74052&page=2

sidecar mounts
54chevybelair replied to k9cottage's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I apologize for taking so long to post this. Anyhow, I bought a used Champion Escort with full intention of buying a manufactured set of mounts specific for the RSV. I first contacted Champion directly and inquired about buying mounts. They offered them for $1000.00 a set. Money doesn’t go into my wallet very easy and it leaves even harder so I had a hard time with the price. But I was able to look at what they offered and I wasn’t impressed. A majority of the forces reacting from the sidecar are on the rear lower and upper mounts. Champion mounts one piece of tubing to the side of the bike for the rear upper and lower mounts and some of the mounting points don’t appear to be very strong. http://venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=72852&stc=1&d=1353591490 http://venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=72853&stc=1&d=1353591490 Next I looked at DMC sidecars. They offered a set of mounts for $675.00. The reason I didn’t buy from them is because they didn’t offer any pictures or couldn’t tell me how they attached or anything else for that matter. In the end they admitted they had only built one set and didn’t have much information. Now I must be clear, I am not bashing DMC as they get great reviews within the sidecar community, I am just stating my experience and why I choose not to buy from them. The next place looked was Motorvation engineering. These people were great to talk to and they offered plenty of pictures and a price list online. Their complete set of mounts was about $700.00. The lower rear mount they use is just a frame clamp. This concerned me because the “Truss like” triangulation of the mounting arms causes forces (parallel to the ground) on the lower mounts. This would constantly be trying to spin the lower rear clamp. http://www.motorvation.com/rystmts1.htm I know what you’re thinking, will anything make this guy happy? Well I am hard to please and I expect a lot for my money. I had exhausted my options of buying a set of mounting hardware and decided to build my own. I did buy one clamp from Motorvation to use under the seat. The rest of my mounts are made from 10GA (0.135”) steel. http://venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=72854&stc=1&d=1353592093 http://venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=72855&stc=1&d=1353592724 http://venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=72856&stc=1&d=1353592840 http://venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=72857&stc=1&d=1353593040- 15 replies

sidecar mounts
54chevybelair replied to k9cottage's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
This is a CAD model of what I have done. There is not much frame detail but the frame rear lower mount clamps to the frame in 2 places and bolts to 2 other places on the frame to prevent rotation and I also bolted it to a bracket on the crosstube. I don't know what this bracket was for but it was there so I gave it more strength. I think I fixed the other pictures. http://venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=72563&stc=1&d=1351739944- 15 replies

sidecar mounts

This is what I did on the upper front. It will not help you much because you don't have a split on the left side of the frame. This is what others have done. - 15 replies

K9, I did just what you are doing earlier this year. I can give you a ton of information if you tell me what you want. What sidecar are you mounting?- 15 replies

Good luck on your quest.

looks like a great setup. I made one last year, not as nice as yours but I added lights. I just plug it into the wire harness for the trailer. This worked great while we were touring Colorado, but haven't used it since. http://venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=71607&stc=1&d=1347668256

To answer your question, YES. That was one of the highlights of my trip. Silverton is a town you must stop in and then head north and enjoy. Ther is no shoulder and no place to stop for a little while. Oh Yeh no guard rails either. There is so many great roads in Colorado and the million dollar highway is one of them. I should have been back there 2 weeks ago with my good friend.

Do you know what bent or did a clamp slip on the frame? I hope you didn't damage your paint. -
parking brake for 2nd gen
54chevybelair replied to 54chevybelair's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
thanks for the reply guys. I didn't even think about something so easy. I found a small bungee cord laying around that works just fine. I like to be able to warm it up without having to sit on it and hold the brake. -
Has anyone developed a parking brake for a 2nd gen. Now that I have a sidecar, I can't use my kickstand anymore.
-
Here is a pick of a hacked 2nd gen. Sidecar rigs do handle different but they are fun. Your storage is greatly increased as most of them have a huge trunk. Because the added weight is asymmetrical, it will slightly pull to the right during acceleration and pull to the left during deceleration, you can't stop physics. Most sidecarist will modify their triple trees to reduce steering effort. This will be additional cost that can't be transfered between bikes. My friend with a similar situation just traded his GL1800 in on a Canam touring model. He and his wife love it.

Somebody should go buy it before its gone.

I would like to thank 01 Rider. He sent me a great set of eyebrows and refused to take any money beyond the shipping cost. I have never met this man and to think he would do this for a complete stranger is pretty cool. I took a picture with them laid out like I was planning. What do you think? They mostly fit but could use a little bending. I am not sure if I can soak them in hot water to soften them or if I should just see if double sided foam tape will hold them down. Any ideas?
-
I agree Freebird. I just wanted to let the group know there is a new option. I will stick with K&N. Advanced Auto often has sales on Mobil1 for cars. They offer 5 quarts plus the filter for around $40. When they do that I stock up. I doubt you will see a special like that on MC oil and filters.

alternate Stebel horn location
54chevybelair replied to 54chevybelair's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks for all the ideas. I decided to put it in the fairing, for a couple reasons. I couldn’t find any place that it wouldn’t stick out like a sore thumb and the chrome is already getting bad on the horn. So with the great idea to hide it in the fairing, you can’t see it and the poor chrome doesn’t matter. -

54chevybelair replied to 54chevybelair's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Yes they are Dunlop D404. At the time I purchased them, they were the only stock sized white walls available. They probably are not good enough for travels with the side car, so my next tire will need a higher load rating. -

The sidecar is made by Champion and the model is Escort.
