Rear tire change
slickster replied to AD5ME's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I attached a chain around the bar that protects the front of each saddlebag, my engine hoist easily lifted the rear so I could slip the wheel assy off...put a long bolt through 2 links just below and on either side where the hoist hook attaches to the chain...that way the bike won't roll over....pick just the rear up...there have been lots of injured bikes and "wrenchers" when bikes have toppled off lifts...some even at the stealership....2 bikes were dropped on the show OCC..remember that?....lifting it that way seems easy and stable..the only down side is that is wants to move around some if you try to apply pressure to a bolt of something....have everything removed except the axle, raise bike, remove axle/wheel, lower it on some scrap wood and reverse process when reinstalling... -
What's with the clutch?
slickster replied to darthandy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I had same symptoms...put a kit in it supplied by a forum member...the friction discs were fine, got a heavier spring and some other needed parts, all one kit, about 89 bucks if I remember..there is a thread on it here somewhere....easy to install...NO slip since... -
Gas Miliage

Rear tire change
slickster replied to AD5ME's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
The last time I changed the rear tire, I picked up the bike with my engine hoist..very simple and the tire slipped straight down easily....maybe a solid tree and come-a-long?...probably safer and cheaper than a jack and adapter....:) -
Gas Miliage

06' RSV...never less than 38mpg up to 45mpg once in a while....at 70-75...40mpg 2 up...32 mpg?...sometin' ain't right... -
Ride what you like and can justify paying for....most bikes are just toys....HD's are good bikes that hold their value and are fun to ride....they have tweaked the v-twin about as far as they can, hence the heat and typical top end rebuild around 100K....it is a fun bike to farkle as the list of available stuff never ends...I have a used RSV and it does everything a harley does and more, for alot less $$....

Ah, the 5th gear whining
slickster replied to farm1810's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I don't ride my rsv very hard most of the time...typically I hit 5th at 45-50mph...no lugging and I average 42 mpg....it does like to wind up should the spirit move me though....have put 13K on it in a year and have yet to hit the rev limiter....(is there one?) gps says I've been 108 mph....changed the fuel pump today ....generic pump, pretty easy install.... -
Creaking Rear Wheel SYNDROME
slickster replied to rumboogy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
We were 2 days in an 8 day trip and the rear wheel started creaking....ignored it and rode on....sometimes it was quiet, sometimes not...finished the trip without incident...that was 2 weeks ago...today go out and the fuel pump quit... -
Shorter windshield?
slickster replied to Guido41's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I cut 2-3 inches off my stock one...just enough to allow me to see over the top...near zero buffeting and I can duck a little when it's really raining...tape it up, mark a line and cut with a jig saw with a metal blade in it....used an orbital sander to round off the edges and clean it up....works for me.... -
2001 RSV Chripping sound
slickster replied to Richie R's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
For me it's turn up the radio, get loud pipes or ignore it.... -
I'll stick to the stock stuff....there can be a problem created by over oiling them..some have reported significant drops in mpg after cleaning and oiling...be aware...

I was exactly there last tuesday on my burgandy RSV 2-up....just got home today, sunday, after 2503 mi in 7 days....went to Alvin York's grave and home then to Va, NC, GA, SC, FL....had a great time riding the back roads and twisties...bike was super, more comfortable than my old 1500 wing....

how many miles with no valve adjustment??
slickster replied to kyle's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I did a valve adjustment 10K ago at 30K on the bike...there is a great kit available from someone on this forum...pretty easy job, did not remove carbs, measured the clearance, removed the shim if out of spec, added or subtracted needed thickness and selected proper shim...no biggie...maybe 3 hr job...all tools and shims in kit...don't put it off...if you burn a valve you will be sorry.... -
Dirty battery cables..take the battery out, make sure it's topped up, clean the terminals and cables....that would be the place I'd start....

Progressive Front Springs air pressure..
slickster replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Looked at the progressive website...don't see the venture listed...part number anyone for front springs? -
305 Chev - Boat I/O - I could use some help.
slickster replied to GolfVenture's topic in Watering Hole
Take a jumper wire from the + on the battery to the + on the coil, that will eliminate the switch, wiring, ballast resistor etc, and see how the boat runs....something ain't right and it sound electrical.... -
160hp...129ft/lbs torque....the local BMW dealer gets one in a week or so...already sold for just over 31K...very sophisticated, techy type of bike...the headlight is facing up with a mirror controlled by a gyro so the beam always aims where you are going....suspension/power are adjustable....could be the new bench mark....love to get one and meet a V-rod at a light some time....

Getting bike from Ohio to Florida. ??
slickster replied to back in the saddle 2's topic in Watering Hole

Popping in the Drive line???
slickster replied to cookiemonster's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I just did mine last week...lifted it up using my engine hoist...no prob.... -
My 06' has very good brakes compared to any of the dozen or so bikes I've had...assuming the the level is firm when you pull it, time to pull the calipers and see what's up....something's not right....

Did a 350mi ride with the queen yesterday and noticed a disturbing noise near the differential, today it's going crick...crick...crick...as the wheel rolls slowly....thinking somehow the diff is shot, oil clean, took sensor out and teeth look fine...check the forum and learned it might be the diff pins being dry....broke it down, cleaned and greased with honda moly 60....noise gone...Thanks to the powers that be....Mick

Reduced fuel economy...that varies
slickster replied to Venturer's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I just filled up a few minutes ago...183 mi on 4.3 gal....42.5mpg...very consistent....if I travel between 65-70, 2 up, it might get 45 mpg....again, change out the k and n filters...I'm guessing over oiled...happen alot.... -
There are lots online, I got mine at J and P cycle...the magnets won't scratch your pain, I did add a small loop of webbing and attached it to one of the bolts holding down the plastic cover around the gas cap...
