Problems with the Trike.
djh3 replied to Brenda H's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'm no Pro. LOL What are we talking about any who? I got back from a 3500 mile plus trip all was well. 2 days later I went out to start the bike and got a click then nothing, I worked 2 days to figure at best it was a bad main 30 amp fuse by the solenoid, bad connections for plug by said solenoid or bad ground from battery to block at back where it hooks up. It was kind of one of those once you get started just eliminate everything deals. All bolts/fasteners on this bike are metric. If ts the floor board mount bolts I think they are a 6mmx150 thread by 35mm long? Dont have mine anymore to go take apart and look. -

Funny this thread comes around about every time my insurance on bike is due. I just got my cost from Dairyland a couple days ago. Granted my bike is a 2013 Victory XCT. $570 But I dont carry minimums either, full coverage with higher liabilities. I think the RSV was just about $415 a year.

If changing maybe look to get something new enough it has Fuel injection. I know a couple guys that had the VTX 1300 and later got the 1800. Both said the 1800 felt lazy compared to the 1300 performance. I had an 09 Kawasaki 900 vulcan. For a smaller bike it had good scoot. I'm not that old (well at least I dont think I am) but the heavy ne ofthe 2nd gen RSV was scaring me. That's why I moved to a Victory Cross bike.

I have GPS on right side of bars and phone on the RAM X mount on left. They are up just about vision level so I dont look down. I had a windshield bag on my Vulcan when it had just a windshield. With the bat wing fairings I just am not tall enough to see over them well. I look on RAM mounts site, find what looks to be what I want and get a part number. then I go shop E-bay or amazon. I have bought parts and pieces separately off e-bay cheaper at times than a "kit" off the same place. My Victory is set up about the same. I just looked and RAM makes different sized X mounts now. Have one listed for "large" phone. Thousands of miles using mine and it has never moved. I wired in a phone charger under the fairing to a key on power source and ran the cord up to the phone to charge so using pandora or nav dont kill the battery.

My local tractor supply has odds and ends like that in hardware section. So does my lowes in the "special hardware" cabinets. -
Looks like a couple of my students got a hold of it.

I really liked the attributes of the 130 in front. Never did I fell it make the bike squirmy or ill handling.

Also has -No Cruise, no nav, no passenger seat to speak of few other things they stripped off. For apparently no reason. Who wants a touring bike with no cruise? (crickets) I sort of think they are cool too, but lack of the things that make a GW nice would make me step away. I was in a Honda dealer last week and he told me they did not make any 2016 models of those as they didnt sell great. Also that allegedly there is a new GW on the drawing boards for next model year. More HP, more CC's more cyl here ya go.

They make screw extractors that look very similar to torx bits for internal wrenching bolts. A torx will work ok too push come to shove. Make sure its tight and tap in hole. Depending on situation maybe a pencil torch and some heat to help break it free.

Hawt D@mn. Braver than me. Racing no matter what form is all about consistently hitting your marks. Then you learn to deepen your brake zone and push a little harder. Thats awesome practice and laps will bring times down.

Certified Yamaha tech
djh3 replied to lonzo's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
MiCarl yup kind of same in automotive field. One of my students maybe ayear out of a 2yr program is certified Ford tech in a coue things. To me he aints been in field long enough, but the dealership must feel there is potential there to spend money for school. But just aint no school like school of hard knocks and experience. -
Seen a few last week on opening week of Daytona Steve. My observation from my day up there is there are only 3 kinds of bikes anyone buys. HD street glide/electra, sport rockets and Goldwings.

hair line cracks in my trailer plastic molded body
djh3 replied to Brake Pad's topic in Trailer Talk
Mike you sure its plastic? ABS like the fairing stuff I would have to guess right? Some have had decent success with the plastic welder thing from Harbor Freight. Our fiberglass stuff on the race cars we use to stop drill the very end of the hole, same on aluminum on the aircraft. When I worked for U-Haul we stop drilled the end and put a pop rivet in it to displace the stress. -

While a guy may be a "certified" tech, he may not know jack about that type bike. While I was out of work one of the places I was talking to about employment the gal kind of gave me a heads up. You can get certified by Yamaha but youll spend your time working on side by sides or jet ski. You have to figure they aint made a bike like that in many years, and since then they have sold what? Sport bikes so thats what the techs get experience on. Dont see it as that tough if you have done them things before, probably a PIA to get to but once your there... Set motor to TDC, tie wrap the chains up so they dont fall in the motor. Release the chain tensioner and start unbolting from middle out on caps. Bad thing is it will probably take a couple times thru to get the valve clearances right as your changing cams and the wear on them will be less if they are new. @PUC could probably do it in a day. -
Fellow I talked to at Daytona said check in periodically as the do get folks that trade in for different truck etc. I have been on a fixed income ever since 1978 when I went in the USAF. I hear that all the time here in Fla by the retirees. Far as I can see everybody is on a fixed income. You cant make anymore than you get paid, with the few odd places that still pay overtime. These snow birds always pop off about a fixed income, but they are driving cars only a couple years old and have 2 households. One here and one up north somewhere. Guess their "fixed income" is fixed a lot higher than mine ever will be. There are other loading systems out there similar that are less. I have seen them on you all tube.

Yup I know what you mean on towing. I really liked the Outback brand toy haulers. But front cargo area, but ramp entry is steep. Maybe something like this is a better option.

Anyone Used the Motion Pro Bead Breaker Tire Irons Shown in this Video?
djh3 replied to BlueSky's topic in General Tech Talk
I will turn the 2x4 side ways so grain is across vs straight. but basicly same idea. But with the disc brakes on the wheel you need to place boards under the wheel to space it up so the disc don't hit or bend. Now this here looks like a CowPuc invention. -
I get one of his "have to haves" is A-inside plumbing B-separation between "normal" storage of bike/side by side/ golf cart or what have you. This is also one of my wifes must haves. I dont want the bike parked in my living room should I have or want to just stop for the night. We did the pop up and tent camping for years. The early morning or middle of the night trips down the lane to the wash room get old. Separate cargo space from living quarters is just plain hard to find in a tag along. this looks something like the floor plan he is going to have to make. It is by me ready made asking $15.500 keystone Cougar 300srx. Look into the "work and play" models. They are kind of utilitarian, but made on a cargo type frame set up and decent made. They have some that ave sliding door separating cargo space. I have seen some of those say 4-6 yr old with separation on CL around here for under 9k Good luck with your endeavor.

My bone to pic on that is tryin to wedge them things in. I just did tires on my Victory. No way on GGE you could have got those in there. It took two passes around with the 2x4 "bead breaker" to finally get the thing to move. They were radials, and I'm having a theroy that maybe the radials have a stiffer sidewall and are a bit tougher to dis mount. -
No need to fab any brackets. You can simply use 3/4" "P" clamps, a 1/4"x20 bolt and put the clamp around the bag rails. You need some wide clamps at the front. There are some from V-twin manufacturing guys were using to sort of cover the joint. I just used stainless worm clamps.

Some have mounted them. For me it took away from low vision as I'm a little short to see over it.

OK here is my .02 worth. Where are you planning on putting the door? You just going to enlarge the existing door and make it a side load? Outback makes a side load like that, but the issue that made me walk away from that idea is the trailer is only 8'. A regular toy hauler is the way to go. The floor is stressed for the weight, has tie downs and the garage is 10' long. Trying to get a RSV in an 8' space and then park it sideways and then to try and get it down a ram backwards. I also like making things on my own, but this is more work than its worth I think.

When I was like around 10 or so Evil Knevil was popular. So we would build ramps and jump them off and over all kinds of stuff. I remember Carl jumping the ramp, landing on the front wheel and going a long way on the front wheel, over the handlebars. Long enough Mike and I looked at each other and though WOW this could hurt. It did but not me. LOL Model cars with Estes rockets taped, glued stuffed into them. Then set them off.
