I have a friend I race with online. He works in the internet set up, cell phone networking industry stuff. He has told me a couple times that Cell phones and the "updates" they get over time are actually bugs in the updates. The bugs make your phone work slower and are made to kill the phone so youll upgrade. To me Microsoft does the same thing. Every 4 yr or so the stop support for a previous OS and come out with something new, that often is worse for the common man but techy folks like.

Valve shimming issue
djh3 replied to bobber's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Just glad it worked. When I did mine I thought the tool lacked a lot to be desired as far as design. I know from reading threads you dont want to stress it very much. They are cast so not real strong if in a bind. I think flyinfool was machining some and they would be a much strudier tool -
I have to laugh when I see "tire gauge" in one of these bike kits. My 2nd gen one I tried out. I couldnt get the same pressure twice. It was more like a check and average out. i would check with my known good gaure and the OEM would be anywhere from 2-7lb difference. In the trash it went.

Well I dont know if there is any difference between first and second gen kits. But I believe my second gen kit had a spark plug socket that you could put the screw driver shaft thru to break loose. A flip screw driver, probably a 8-10, 9-11, 12-13 open end wrenches. None of the tools are very good quality. A pair of joke pliers. I think if you had a flip screw driver, a couple of choice allens and 8-10-11-13 mm wrench youd have it covered. On my Victory I have my leatherman tool I carry on my belt, a roll of electrical tape in the bag, a cell phone and credit card. Truth is I dont think your going to be able to fix a hole lot on the side of the road anymore. Unless your Cowpuc.

Best Buy has been sending me ads for weeks. I think this week they had a nice little lap top for like $200-$250.

Valve shimming issue
djh3 replied to bobber's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
It should depress the bucket with or without a shim. But it sounds like because there is no shim in place when you get almost fully compressed the pressure kicks the tool over. So if I'm getting this rite, maybe take the thinnest shim you have and use tool to depress before it kicks over and insert shim. I think if you get it in enough to keep from kicking over you may be able to work the shim in place. Once you get a smaller shim in, then you can align tool and try to get the correct size in there. Any of this make sense? -
WE have talked it over a few times. (full time RV thing) But after living in a mobile home fro 20yr in the USAF I'm not sure I want to do that again. I like having room to work on stuff. Took me almost a week to do mine. But I took my time and didnt work on it every day either. I had probably 6-8 hours in getting the body work off before I could actually inspect the valves. I had all the shims I needed as the same ones fit the FJ1200 motor I had in a racecar. I could maybe work it in, but no telling when I could get to it and finish. Steve has experience with a dealer up that way its probably your best bet.

OH man do I have to only pick one. Use to work graves shift in an aircraft maintenance control office on base. We went over to one of the guys place on base. He pops open the beer fridge and asks if we want one? Well da huh. Its like 7am So by noon or so we are outs beer, time to go home. I jump on the GS1100 Suzuki Full Dress and motor the 8 or 10 miles home. I still dont remember that drive, that is the LAST time I did anything like that. I also made a couple of those ice covered road trips the 10 miles home from base. I was in Southwest Oklahoma and the stuff would come in over night and freeze up. Working graves everything was frozen over in am to go home. Rode home in a sleet storm once and when I got home took off my field jacket and it actually stood up in the bath tub with arms straight out like I was holding controls. Thats where it sat until it thawed out.

If I thought I could work it in, I would do it. But I get like a week off before xmas and thats it. Then all I have is weekends. And someone ----> over there has other plans for my "leisure" days off.

What to do for Christmas??? New York, Florida, West, North South?

DOD for as long as I can remember (I enlisted in 78) required us to satay in base quarters if available. But I have reserved room in Key West Navel station. About 3 blocks from the Montgomery Square. But I would doubt KW would be a good vacation spot for a year or more with all the damage they had. Up around Ocala, Gainsville is nice area. State parks some rolling hills. Or Clearwater/St Pete area. -
GM in-car distraction systems, whether you want it or not.

The wifes 02 Durango and my 96 Ram 2500 have way to simple HVAC controls. A dial controls fan speed, and Durango has slides for heat/cool. To simple to operate I guess for malinials. -

Just had one of them moments. In Sept we had Irma (hurricane) come thru and devastate the Keys. So probably not a great place to go this year. The rest of the state is in good shape. But the Keys was hit terribly hard. -
I have switched over to WIX, because purolator changed design. I think the Mobil 1 filter and Bosch are still fine also. But since we got an Oreilys by the house WIX is a very good brand.

That particular model shares the Dart (now discontinued I think) Check out reviews on consumer reports and edmunds if you can. Dont know much about those Jeeps. The Cherokee that shares the Durango platform are pretty solid.

NYC-not for me, but your experiences there may be different. Actually go to vacations to go They have some last minute deals that can be significantly discounted. Disney in Orlando if you dont mind crowded busy tons of kids. As they are all out of school. -
Well OK aint the first time. Looks to work OK. Sure would be best option of LED VS the plug in bulb. As has been mentioned many times on both the LED and HID "replacement" type bulbs, the lens/reflectors dont always give the best desired results. I did have an HID in mine and it worked great. Took some adjusting to get settled right. But this set up wont fit my current headlight.
-
So how pray tell did you get that headlight to work? The RSV has a sealed lens set up, you only change the bulb. In order to make the Daymaker headlight work you have to cut the glass part of the headlight apart and do quite a bit of work from what I have read. No easy job. The passing lights are a bolt in job. As for the LED headlight bulbs, the issue I have heard guys have to make provisions for is most have heat sinks on the back that get into the wiring or just simply not enough room behind the bulb before it hits the fairing.

I have a guy I know that owns a bus company in Chicago area. When fall comes they stop running the Bio Diesel because the colg make it gel up. So temps in your area may mandate switching from time to time.

I have the same issue with the carriers I have used. I use to be on Sprint, if you complain enough they will give you a signal booster free to use while you are with them. Verizon has a booster that works for them. But you have to buy it on your own dime. I dont know if there is a generic type unit that will work or not. Both the units mentioned before need interweb connection to work.

What do you guys think of this?
djh3 replied to Chaharly's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Good luck finding one. If I remember right, a fellow overseas built them years ago. He has not sold them in years. If you have a line on one great. I think they need a live power source. I think the couple guys that had them on 2nd gen had wired them to a key on power source so it did not kill battery. -
Small engines like those Hondas have not had mags in years. The Honda is listed as electronic ignition. I think the 3 brigs I have are electronic also. I remember when they had points though.

Amzoil 20w-50
djh3 replied to Big Auggie's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I ran the 20w50 in my 2nd gen in summer down here in Fla. I did a lot of longer type trips say 80-100 miles back and forth one way to the airport for work. In the 90+ heat I felt the weight would not hurt it. So see if you can find oil recommendations for you bike. I am going to say if the constant ambient temp is under 90 the 50 may be to heavy. I was happy with Rotella T6 which is a 15w40 I think. Amsol should have something in the lighter weight that works for you if you want to go the Amsoil route. There are other synthetics out there that cost a bit less. But I know some folks are happy with those products and are on a deal of some sort. -
I have used the EBC and also a couple other off brands with good results. I shop e-bay most times. EBC semi-metalic if I remember right
