I changed to a 130 from the OEM E_3. I cant say as I really notice much difference at all. I have put over 5K on it. I do have the front end lowered in the triple trees, dont know if that makes a difference on this or not. Mine feels fine solo or 2 up. Definatly like the wet weather grip of the Commanders.

07 RSV Grasshopper Backrest
djh3 replied to gamberch's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Barry the utopia fold forward and then down. SO the backrest sort of falls right infront of the back part of drivers seat. Makes it easy even for a short legged guy lie me to swing a leg over. -

Mine came with a Utopia. I had a Mustang seat with the drivers backrest on my Vulcan 900. No way I would have put 35K on the Kawasaki without the backrest. The utpoia is pretty adjustable. I supose it would be easy enough to remove if need be. But if your thinking you need to pull it off for 2 up riding, remember your passenger is gaining like 4"+ on almost any other touring bike except maybe the freeway couch er uh I mean Goldwings. I looked at the grasshopper for the Kawasaki and if I remember rite once its on its there not much in the way of any adjustment. -
Well, that should teach him to not stop in the crosswalk!!!

The "NO QUESTION IS STUPID " rule is in effect here...

Yea I forgot. Locktite is "brand name" Guess it get used by myself and others as a generic name. My read is 272 I think the blue I have is a paste sort of stuff in a chap stick sort of bottle. The green I have is the thick "retension" type stuff. Its what we used. And if using thread locker-a little goes along ways. -

The Shell Rotella T6 syn seems to be "best bang for the buck" Syn oil available. It meets the requirments and is like $21 a galon @ Wally World. Mobil 1 is $10 a quart, dont take a government accountant to figure this out. I change mine @ 4500 miles as recomended in the owners manual. I am using Purolator L14610 Its 3.25" long so it get a little more filtering done. Here is a link to oil filter cross refference, he also has links on side of this page to brush up on your knowledge of oil filters and why we think what we do about them. I run Dyna beads for balancing my tires, therfore I cant put any slime/sealer stuff in my tires. It will cause the beads to clump up and not do thier job. Not a big fan of the sealant stuff anyways. I have had it in some truck/car tires before and it does nasty things to the inside unless you dismount and clean it all up ASAP. I carry a tire plug kit and one of the inflators that uses the small C02 bottles to inflate. Locktite: You got tons of good answers. Blue=I take it apart now and then, also goo for disimular metals say alum screw into steel nut plate or the like. Red= I dont want this to come apart. Green=We use to use this one when building race car differentals on the ring gear bolts, carrier bolts and the like. The good stuff will be like a liquid weld, usualy need heat to get it back apart. -
I ride mine to the airport for work. I use the frame lock, I guess this is what your talking about loked with key. I also bought a disc brake lock. Has a hardened pin that goes thru the brake disc. Then cover it up. If they try to roll it or dissable the frame lock it wont roll unless they have someway to support the front tire. I hope by then someone is asking questions.

CB so does the Gorilla go with you on trips? Where does he ride?

New sound on the bike
djh3 replied to dwatson636's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
My rear kind of makes a clicking noise. I have been told its just the compound of the pads. I would say sounds like you may just have something caught up in the caliper or pad area. Could check and see if the pad has become loose where bonded to backing plate, or the metal tab things have worked around to get in the way. -
If I'm not mistaken the un/underinsured part of my policey is what keeps going up dramaticly. Everytime I turn around it goes up another 50 or so. In Oklahoma we had to show proof of insurance when you bought tags and also when you got vehocle inspected. So how these folks get away with no insurance I dont know. The insurance companies dont notify the police thru computers somehow?

Before the RSV I mounted up a pair of headphone type speakers inthe wifes helmet. Very simular to the J&M ones. It has a cord you plug in just like a std heaphone cord and it had a volume control on it. She could plug into het music and put the player in her pocket and I didnt have to listen to the same music as hers.

The 2x4 under the kickstand for oil changes works OK, oil filter easy access and you can run a slightly longer one if you go with a purolator to get a little more filtering. Most guys use Shell Rotella T6 I belive around here. Syn 15w40. Bags come off with 4 ea 4mm allen heads. Dont know about the trunk because I havent had to take it off. Splitting the fairing really done gain you any access for cleaning. High 30's on MPG say 36-38, mine dont seem to matter if its 2 up or solo. The Utopia backrest is good, heigth adjustable as is how far forward it pushes you. You passenger will like the amount of room they get compaired to almost any other touring bike. No more helmet in the back of your head when stopping.

Rear Speaker wiring in front?
djh3 replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Not sure but probably run as "one channel" to front (one pair of wires) and one pair to rear being there is no left to right fader only front to rear. So does the amp work over the intercomm and headset? -
An interesting new spray on chrome process from Germany

Check out the stuff this place does. Only took me an hour to find them again. It looks cool as heck but not cheap. -
I have not peroused that part of the service manual. But its a ring and pinion set up very simular to a car type rear end.I dont think I would be hesatant to do one.

About 4 or so years ago a buddy of mine and I rode up to bike week in Daytona for the day. We drove inside the track to see what was going on at the time. When we drove out we were sitting at a stop light waiting for the light. Here comes a pack of them skeeter killers of all sizes, the 250, 350 and the 750 some stock some cafe's was really cool seeing all them things still running. If I remember rite the first few years of the 750 were killer in the handeling dept. Up around 50 or so they had a tendancy to get bad front end wobble, thus the later years having a stablizer on them.

I figured it out. Because he is MSF certified, and therfore more cautious heads up etc they figure he wont be in an accident so they wont be able to jack the rates. I hate insurance, we are betting against ourselves. The ins company is betting we wont need it and we are betting we will, but if you do need it then you pay again with higher rates.

There is a place over on the Gulf Coast here in Fla that does some pretty neat stuff like that in addition they can do all kinds of graphics. But it aint cheap neither. -
I have seen where fellows have mounted them using just the suction cup. Sorry I'm not that trusting. I have had mine fall off onto the dash before, so @ 70 down the road I'm probably not going to find the pieces. I could also see the windshield on the bike having more vibration than the handlebars. The handlebars are rubber isolation mounted and will disapate some of the vibs.

Thats OK, ask GSC what his tags run per year. I couldnt belive what a friend of mine that lives over by Montreal told me it cost him. As far as the rates because your a MSF instructor, I would call and find out why. Talk to a supervisor or something. Thats like saying you wont provide coverage to a police officer or race car driver.

Patching a rear or any MC tire
djh3 replied to PGunn's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
When I worked in a service station back in the mid 70's we got a new "plug" gun looking thing that put plugs in that looked like that. But from what I remember that thing would be way to big to carry with you on a trip. I just have a T handle and the rope looking ones. Luckly I have not had to use one on the bike. But a couple years back my daughter in-law kept me busy couple times a month fixing her tires. -
Military know how ! Hey is that a 250? My bro-inlaw had one of them things. It would just about out run my RD 350 yami up to about 50.

Patching a rear or any MC tire
djh3 replied to PGunn's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
If its already off, sure I would go ahead and fix it. IMOP a plug is an OK fix if its mounted up. The prefered fix would be a patch. So long as the puncture was in the "center" part of the tread. Sidwalls are out, but if its in what you might say the main part of the tread your good to go on patching it. 1 vote to fix -
Thats probably the size I need to see to use as a phone without my glasses. But I'll be danged if I can find a belt holster for it. Oh well guess I'll keep what I got. I did get the wife a 10" one for traveling etc a couple yr back. She likes it better than messing with a lap top for e-mails and such.
