Valve Shim source - 2013
djh3 replied to Peder_y2k's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I tried to do a little research to find what other bikes used the 25mm shims besides the RSV. One site I was looking at I thought "OK I'll use the VMax" but the shims showed up as 9.5 for it??? I dunno maybe a glitch in thier system. Anyways the FJ1200 yamaha and i found a listing that the Honda CBX used them also, but its an antique. The prices I saw were rediculus $13-15 each. -

I have got some here. you may have to call as it appears the page for the shims is down or something. They only come in even .05 from what I can see in a micro-fiche. IE: 260-265-270 etc. Boy looking on the dealer sites they are proud of them things. -
As of now I have 2 guys riding with me possibly 3. I will meet them in Charlotte NC. Looking at 2 days up to where we are staying in Bowmanville Ont. Going up I 81 to bottom of fingerlakes region around lake Senica to Oswego then back over to I 81 to the boarder. Comming out we will have to make tracks. So fastest route looks to be over to Toronto/Buffalo and cross. I was told to use First street bridge (I think it was) crossing as it was less used and should be quicker. Spend a night somewhere around Tonawanda or something like that.

Looks as though an ingunious fellow could make a mount using the grab rail mounts. Now you have to find a style of trunk that follows the lines.

Sending an e-mail to the Canadian authorities asking exactly what I need besides our passports to ride in. I guessed drivers licence, insurance and registration for bike.

Barrycuda just had a thread like this a little over a month ago. But @ 28k valves should have been checked. Look under bike and ck rear shock for leakage. Check tires ove and look for date code. Brake fluid should not be a brownish color like Jack Daniels. If so it should prob be replaced. Check out simular threads but these bikes are pretty well developed. Basicly the same since 99. They are heavy, but ther is was to help that out. Check lowering front forks. -

Naw my time is 78-98. The forks do shw above the top. But with the fairing and all you cant see the tops hardley. -
That aint right man. From what I understand you all north of the boarder pay more for them also, and get less??? such a deal. I might have half a mind to send it back to them postage due and a letter saying "thats OK if its going to bankrupt you guys you can keep it".

With the top polished alum cover thing off I measured from top of triple tree to a ridge on the top of fork tube. I used a pair of dial calipers and set both sides to the same heighth. I did end up having to take the front wheel off, as I couldnt get the forks to slide with the weight of the wheel in there. Once wheel off was a lot easier to precisley set forks too. -
I would recomend a brake fluid change if it hasnet been done in awhile or if its sort of a JD color. My bike had lees than 12k on it and I was on some of the roads up that way in Oct. Because the IDOT in the cage in front of me didnt know how to drive curvy mountina roads and short braked me several times I had to brake abnormally. I had severe rear brake fade to the point I had to stop and cool things off. Once I got home I bled the brakes as recomended by members here and all was good. Maggie Valley is a nice place to stay, we stayed in Franklin NC in Oct made a good base to run out of. Dragon is OK but you as a driver ain going to see much because your gonna be way to busy. Take your time. Cherahola is a nice ride as is some of the roads running along the lake side from the Fontana Dam. Moonshiner 28 from Bryson City down to Franklin is cool too. Just way to many roads. Here is a link to some great roads up that way. Links on left for different areas.

Looks as though it maybe was rivited or something to the bag. Drill out the one rivit holding the bucket. Make like a washer a little larger than the small silver part by cutting a piec of thin alum or tin, whatever is handy maybe a beverage can. Then drill out center so it will fit over the bucket from back side and rivit back onto bag. The "new" bracket will not allow the bucket to rotate.

Cruise control issues
djh3 replied to Wanaberidin's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'm not real familiar with cruise issue (lucky for me I guess). But it sounds as though it is something tempature related is maybe causing a "bind" or hard spot for the servo to pull the throttle. Perhaps the cable lube used is not "liquid" enough at those temps. From what I have heard and looking at mine there must be like 20 ft of cable on this thing. Down the right handlebar, across to the left side servo motor, then a cable from there up the neck back to the carbs. Maybe the cables have not even been lubed? I'm thinking my 09 needs this done pretty soon but dont know how I'm going to tackle it. Guess I need one of them little tools first. -

Yes basicly. Loosen fork clamps and slide tubes up. I think you can get as much as an inch. There is a tech article on the site here I belive. thanks to Freebird. Easiest would be to take the tank off, but I couldnt for the life of me at that time figure out how to get the thing off. I layed a moving blanket on top of the tank to keep from dinging it up. I got to do it twice, when I forgot to put the chrome covers back on. -
The wife and I were walking around our local mall the other night. Yea small town not much else going on. Anyways there is a store in there that has like a bunch of dollar store type stuff. But while looking around I ran across a box of clear plastic fuel filters. There like $1.00-1.50 ea. Now if I can find my orginal and measure up what its suposed to be I think I'm off with the dial calipers and going to buy me some filters. I replaced mine with a fram from the list in the "what parts" fit section. I didnt particularly like the fit of the hose on the slightly smaller filter I put in.

:sign yeah that:Second the Stebel/Bad Boy style of horn. I liked the first one so much I added a second one on my 2nd Gen. I searched e-bay and got it for around $25 or so, it is a knock off but works great. Here is one on e-bay $18. http://www.harborfreight.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/thumbnail/47x47/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/i/m/image_14833.jpg

My previous phone a Samsung Transform fit nicely in the RAM mount for my Garmin 765t. I had to make a couple of foam spacers to nestle it a little better, and then use a velcro cable strip around it as just a "feel better" securaty strap. Well as fate would have it I lost the phone in an airport and only used it once. The replacment phone is too big to fit. So I looking for a way to mount the new phone a Galexy s 2. I really dont want to spend $40 to mount this up so I am experementing. Right now it jus sort of sits in one of those cloth cup holder catch all things you get for a few bucks. Works OK but once its in there you cant easily adjust your settings, be it pandora stations, volume etc. RAM mount when I put the stuf in comes up with this plastic pouch looking thing.

I hate to ask or "assume", but I'm guessing no one is using trailer brakes? The electric type on my PU I could see being out of the question, but what about one of the slide-tounge hyd units? It sure would help I would think. BTW sharp looking trailer. The weight would scare heck outa me and the height too.

I solved the cheek pad problem by finding out where the glasses hit the pads. Then using a zip ty and putting it around the pad to compress it and make a void for glasses.

Those are the pegs I have for highway pegs up front on mine. They are great. -
I had read somewhere someone was going to wire in a realy so that the only time power was to the I-pod was when the bike was fired up. Its an idea. I was pondering the idea of swapping out the CD player for the I-pod gizmo. But @ close to $300 to get it up and working I dont think its going to happen for me. Teh Venture MP3 has the same sort of issue with needing to run a power for it and remaining on after parking and key off. An they aint cheap neither. For time being I guess I'll just keep using my phone and Pandora.

At 1000 lb it will barely lift a RSV. lol

I have used Bike Brite and I think it works well if you need a spray on cleaner. I just bought a bottle of the S100 on recomendation from a fellow rider as I had used up all the bike brite. Only thing I have tried it on is the nasty brake dusty wheels on the wifes Durango. I can tell you I was pretty impressed with it. They were a redish black color from the brake dust. Sprayed on the S100 and a couple minutes rinsed it off. You could atleast tell they were suposed to be silver. Besster than any other "spray on" wheel cleaner I have tried. So I think it will do good. Usually I use just the spray on detail wax. Only use the S100 type stuff if its really dirty or I got caught in rain.
