The unfortunate part is how bad they (oil companies) are going to rape and pillage us when it goes back up. As fast as it came down it will probably go up 3 times as fast. If I had some 55 gal drums to bury in back yard I would fill them up and store it. Gas is still way high fro what some say it should be. But I think all of america could live with the current prices. I know I can.

Typicaly I think it would be just like your phone or an update to your GPS. Plug it into the computer, log into whatever web site and download the update. I dont know as the actual i-simple adapter thing can be updated. I do not know for sure. But I would be interested in finding out if the OP got it fixed.

Interesting idea for sure. As I mentioned in our corrispondence, it will be interesting if the lights will work at in town traffic where you really need to be seen. Also turbulence behind a vehicle may be a factor. You wil have to make sure they go somewhere that keeps airflow.

Investigating Olivia's History is almost as much fun as riding her!!!!

Just on a thought Puc, contact Dale at the museum in Maggie Valley. He is quite the early HD guy. If he or Matt is not interested they may put you in touch with a appreciative buyer. -
When I was looking to upgrade from my 900 vulcan, I had a couple priorities. I had put a reckless fairing on it and liked it. But I wanted a "touring" bike. Cruise was probably #1. I thought I needed on board intercom and radio also. Knowing what I do now the TD would have been just fine I think and use a sena headset. But a fairing does give a bit more protection, but the windshields are decent too.

Still dont know why if the 1st gens dont have the noise issue, why couldnt one of those be put in and used. -
If the bolts are under the 50 or so buck range I probably would change the bolts also. As a second thought, being it has no cross member under the motor best I remember I might think about pulling the pan and clean it out good after all is done.

No have not bought any add on lights. I did replace the halogen bulbs with some cree led 30w bulbs. Seem to be pretty good.

Yea a lot of head bolts went to "torque to yield" maybe 10 years or more ago. With that being said I bet I have put 5 or more back together with the same head bolts. Most time the spec will say something like torque to 90 ft lb and turn 1\8 more. Me, I would look the bolts over and probably reuse them. I would be more worried about the aluminum head having a bad spot. Are you changing both head gaskets, or just the bad one? To clean it out yup will take a couple oil changes. Get a couple of the cheap oil filters. There use to be a motor flush product Risoline. Reminded me of kerosene. Might try say 2qt of kerosene and a couple qt of cheap oil. Run it for 45 min or so and see what the oil looks like. If one dose looks Ok put regular oil in it and run it a few days and see what it looks like. Then general sense from there.

Kyle, for sure the price is a big factor. The bracket is list around $125, $819 for the outer fairing. Add to that you need the back part of fairing @ $552 you can see it dont take long to go another way. you can get pretty mush a bolt on deal for a TD for like $300 on up. I think Hoppe makes one with radio and a lot of bells an whistles that goes for like $1100 or something.

Actually I'm more a hurricanes fan. But being that team has been... ur um less than stellar lately and rebuilding FSU is my next one up. Really didnt think they were going to get trounced like they did. If the Ducks play like they did against FSU, the turncoat Myer is in for big trouble. they had FSU outs gas by the second quarter. It could be interesting, but I dont have a dog in the fight and really could care less. I live in the middle of Gator country, these people are coo coo for blue and orange. So automaticly the ducks have more fans around here.

I need to do some more studding on what the difference is in the "smd" numbers.

Do they have incandecent bulbs? What is the wattage ea? If they have the housing and a halogen bulb I can get you some info on LED bulbsto fit that have pretty good lighting.

I have a buddy with a old Kawai sport bike kind of like the old kz 1000, I forget the name hurricane or something maybe they didnt import to us as same name. A couple years back we were discussing insur rates and he told me what his tags ran and on top insur for like 8 month. It was just crazy money. I would have to think some of it has to do with you alls "free" medical care deal. Not picking on ya, but I and many others know aint nothin "free". Somebody is payin somewhere.

Rear tire change.....what to do???
djh3 replied to Kettlinton's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I have yet to get the axle bolt out without, er some persuasion insisted upon it also. So should I need to get a punch on the bolt to get it started out, I sure dont want to miss and hit the bags. For me because there is a CD player in the left bag its a bit more involved, but if no CD machine its 4 bolts and more room to work. Also getting the tire back up on the splines for me is easier if I didnt have to fight around the bag. Whatever works for you. -
Oil leak and smoking???
djh3 replied to Wesley G's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Veryy possibly it is 15w40. I remember there is a 5 in there, but didnt go out and check the can. So I am probably off. but 20w50 in winter even here in south seems a bit stiff. -
I thought maybe you were talking about I-75 thru Atlanta. Last week when I went thru there I would have bet it would qualify. Didnt take me long to remember why I try to avoid at all cost.

Oil leak and smoking???
djh3 replied to Wesley G's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I boo boo'd early on and filled it to full. I had oil all the way up in the air box under the tank. It takes a long time to clear up. Oil gets in nooks and cranies even if you wipe it all out it can find its way into the intake of carbs. I usually run between lower mark and half way. Use a block of some sort under the kickstand to level it out. Sounds kind of like a couple things going on. Some normal steam etc. Also for winter time 50w is a bit stiff imop. Even here in Fla I run Rotella T6 5w40. Summer I may put one qt of 20w50 and the rest 5w40 rotella. -
Rear tire change.....what to do???

Taking the bags and mufflers off first will lighten the bike up some. Also will be more balanced when you go to jack it up. -
How much do you pay for FULL coverage insurance on your 2nd gen?
djh3 replied to VentureFar's topic in Watering Hole
As of now I am with dairyland. Started with geico with my 900 vulcan, couple yr with them and rates creep up so went shopping. Next up I forget travelers maybe. Then a year or so with them. Had aarp for a couple years which was geico. They jumpped almost $100 so I went shopping and got to,dairyland. Where you live makes huge difference. How are they going to know if you rode 8000 miles or 800? Do they take the starting and ending milage? Here in Fla my uninsured moteresr cost me more than the actual coverage. PUC I can send you an address you can register to. I had a buddy that lived in NC and I told him that for years. He had higher tags, some sort of personal tax and higher tags. -
Rear tire change.....what to do???

Go to here. Then select from the drop down list 2nd Gen-Wheels and tires. It should give you about 3 options, one of which is a video. Also some references to it in 2nd Gen tech section here, but I didnt find it. you should also lube up the rear splines while you got it apart and probably change the rear gear oil as well. Video here. Try here for write up. Basicly you need: bike on a lift that is secure at a fairly high level to get wheel out. Both bags off. Both mufflers off. Take off equipment first, then worry about getting the bike up. OK just did a test of the links to Venturers. At the top of the site look for :tech library" and go from there. Sorry but they dont allow links. -
How to instal a tire with zip ties I would have never thought of this.
djh3 replied to tufftom4's topic in Watering Hole
Yup I thought of that too. As far as balancing goes, I just use the balance beads. They work great.
